My DIY Aquaponics Aquarium Project

Ойын-сауық

So I've really been wanting to experiment with aquaponic systems and start growing my own fresh vegetables and herbs along with fish. I plan to expand into more involved and larger systems in the future, but I thought it best to start small. I'm a novice at this, so I'm sure I'll make plenty of mistakes along the way, but I want to learn and figure this out.

    An easier way to sprout avocado seeds, I've found, is putting them in a compost bin a few inches down from the surface. Those are the only ones I've been able to seed, and honestly they were accidental grows because it was a compost bin. From that same bin I got broccoli and squash. They all just started growing on their own.

    Hi! I see that it's been 4 years since you posted this video. Just wanted to say thanks! The styrofoam idea was very helpful. I thought the effort made for your aquaponics tank was admirable. Yes, you did not know everything about everything. The important part was you most likely learnt some things by doing. Sometimes the best way to learn is trial and error. I'm going to take your idea and adapt it for my fish tank. I will likely have to experiment to get an efficient setup. I look forward to the process. Thanks again!

    I like that! That’s a great idea.I never thought of the heat gun to heat the can to melt the foam turns out so nice looking eliminating the jagged edges.i do use solo cups when planting seeds in the spring and generally one big pack last me several years of reusing and I found if you have a long sharp/new drill bit like 1/8 or 1/4 you can leave them solo cups all together in the stack just like they come in the bags and drill them all at once and cracking rarely happens unless I rush during drilling it’s much faster than doing them individually,I use to do them one at a time and me planting lots of seeds every year I had figure out a better way lol I can’t wait to try exactly what you did on this video-awesome job! 👍

    With the floating raft maybe use a pan of sorts that you can poke very small holes in the bottom than fill that with pumas rocks. The pumas will filter the water and you dint have to put it in the tank as you can pump the tank water up. This way it is a super efficient and self sustaining system for the tank and water.

    I used a ten gallon aquarium with a bell syphon to a grow bed using flagstone which is pH neutral. I never have to clean my fish tank because of the ebb and flow of the aquarium water in the grow bed. I would anticipate alot of solid fish waste accumulation in your aquarium. I don't have any stones in the aquarium which allows the pump to suck up all the fish waste. I found that more than 2 fish in an aquarium that size will create a high amonia environment thus killing off your fish unless you change the water frequently which is alot of extra work.

    If you put an aquatic plant in the tank, it will take in the ammonia and nitrogen and you never will have to change the water. Although there was a ton of poop hidden at the bottom, I didn't change my tank water for nearly a year with no fish dying, I had to add water occasionally due to evaporation but that all.

    It doesn’t work. You can’t just DIY with living animals, they have specific care requirements and can’t live like this. They will starve or get sick. This isn’t enough space for goldfish. You need to do a lot of research before getting any animal.

    This is good first try for experimenting and if you planned to do this seriously I would suggest some research on the whole subject as is this is unsustainable. Fish and plants are a bit more complicated than this system can support. Learn how the plants and fish transfer and cycle. This is close but not complete. Good luck on your journey!

    Bubbling DOESN'T REMOVE chloramine, it only removes chlorine. Many many water companies use both chemicals, so if you are going to try to bubble out any chemicals then you should call your water company and ask if they add chloramine.

    @MRTN13

    It also removes the oxygen from the water, which may choke the fish eventually. Basic rule: too much water movement = more gas release.

  • @nobrainsnoheadache2434

    @nobrainsnoheadache2434

    chlorine dissipates naturally fairly quickly, the easiest low tech way to make it go away is slosh water back and forth between twp buckets a dozen times, chloramine lasts much longer and is widely used in North America, the safest and most effective way to get rid of it is with a water conditioner, it works instantly and is safe for your fish. Where I live the water the water can actually turn green in the spring, and it can smell heavily of chlorine, it's also very hard so water conditioner is pretty much a no brainer

    Good simple setup but it has issues. The fish choice was not ideal. Try white cloud minnows or maybe guppies. Hopefully thats a Bristlenose Pleco, if so he should be fine but they need extra food as the algae in the tank will never be enough for him. I think thats more work than its worth and the goldfish grow far too big for a small tank like that. I would have also left the top more open as the water won't have enough surface area with the polystyrene the way it is. Why not use some Acrylic and have it as a lid on the tank with the 3" hole for the cups? You also need a better filtration system as the detritus will build up and the pleco needs some driftwood.

    If you're gonna stick with the goldfish make sure they have 10 gallons per. Goldfish have crazy amonia and get about a 6-12inches long. It doesn't have to be an aquarium you could buy a large Tote or livestock watering trough. Super inexpensive. Costs like 40$ max and would make the fish a lot happier.

The reason why people use toothpicks bcuz they use just water instead of gravel. and toothpicks helps it not sink into the bottom. but being you got gravel which supporting it above the water. So you no longer need it anymore!

    Joy George I used clay Pebble grow media. You can buy online or from any hydroponic supply store. They are light weight, but give the roots structure too cling to. No soil is required. I'm still new to this , but I've seen a wide variety of plants grown this way. I'm currently having great success with avacado trees in this same system. They have grown from seed to about 3 feet tall in about 4 to 5 months. I'm planing to create a much larger version of this soon. I've acquired some 275 gallon IBC tanks too use as reservoirs in the system. Stay tuned.

    What I learned from aquaponics, is that, plants love ammonia, so it MIGHT be okay that you didn't cycle the tank, as long as you always have some matured plants (emersed, emersed plants do better at filtering because they have better access to CO2) to provide filtration, but I also learned that fish waste is not actually the perfect plant food. There will always be an excess of nitrates when compared to other nutrients. The aquaponics farmer compensated for this by decomposing fish food in a separate compartment in the system. He also added a denitrification filter. Look up Denitrification Discussion Freshwater Aquarium to learn more about that. It's weird. I think the water flowing thru the filter has to stay below 50gph and they were using a ORP meter to make sure they were truly degassing the nitrogen and not producing laughing gas instead. It involves anaerobic bacteria, as opposed to aerobic bacteria in the typical nitrification aquarium bio-filters.

    Plants will absorb fish waste, but it must be converted into nitrates by bacteria. This tanks needs a filter for the bacteria to grow on which converts ammonia to nitrites, then to nitrates. It also should be set up without fish for at least a week or two before fish are added to grow the bacteria and prevent toxic ammonia buildup

    Question. For the seeds, do you plant them in the clay, and let them grow, or do you plant the seeds in soil, and pull it out and put it deep in the clay, in order for it to grow?

    Chloe Ace to answer your question I have started plants three different ways now. I have started them in rockwool which is commonly used in Hydroponics and aquaponics. I have started them using the paper towel method where you place the seeds inside of a plastic Ziploc type bag with a wet paper towel in a dark cool place. I have also started seeds in vermiculite. After doing all of these methods my favorite and the one I will continue using is starting them in vermiculite. You need a seed tray and you can all of the spaces with vermiculite. Then sprinkle the seeds that you want to plant on top of each space. Then you can take a toothpick and stir the seeds into the vermiculite so that they are the approximate depth they are supposed to be for planting. I usually leave one empty whole or spot in the tray in which to pour my water through. I add water to the tray from my aquaponics system and the vermiculite soaks it up and becomes very well saturated around the seeds creating a moist Zone ideal for germination. I then place the tray on top of a warming mat underneath a grow light indoors. Once the seedlings get a couple inches tall, I transplant them from the vermiculite into net pots with clay media. Vermiculite shakes off of The Roots very easily like sand. You can replant more and more seeds in the same vermiculite in that tray almost indefinitely. You may have to top off with more water from your system from time to time as needed. On larger seeds such as avocados, they can be placed directly in the clay media. you want the seed half submerged in water

    Get some plants or something inside the tank so that the fish feel safer. The better those fish are cared for, the more they will eat and help your plants. A little bit of driftwood should be in there too because the plecostomus needs to rasp on it for fiber.

    Depends on the plant and fish load.the more plants and less fish you have the less you have to change.but you will need to change water at some point cause it's impossible to have a compeletly enclosed system cause water is suppose to move around. I should know cause I'm into planted tanks and nature.in nature there is no such thing as a truly enclosed ecosystem.water is owes moving around and in a artificial enivorment you need to move the water around to mimic how water in nature works.

    Idea is good. But some improvement may be needed. Plants can only take the inorganic material through the roots. The aquarium tank will need microorganism to decompose the fish waste before the plants to take up. The fish need the gentle flow current rather than in the constant bubbling condition.

    Dr. Arun S Son my fish did fine with the plants that I added. Try and choose a type of fish that doesn't eat the roots of your plants. I will say the plants I started as seeds or Sprouts in the system did better than the fully established plants that were transplanted from soil. Throwing some what mature plants into a system that is brand new you kind of deprived the mature plants from adequate nutrients at first. Small plants starting as Sprouts or seeds don't require that much nutrients and can grow with the fish. That's just some advice from my experience so far.
