My Deconversion Story

In this video I discuss the events leading up to my spiritual deconstruction. It was a process that took a long time. I transitioned over those years from Christian fundamentalism, to atheism, specifically secular humanism. In this video I tried to make sure it was as raw and uncut as possible. In the video I make statements about what certain denominations of Christians believe, obviously this is a generalization and should be treated as such. There is a lot more nuance to religious belief than I stated in the video. I hope that if anyone watching is going through something similar to what I did, they understand that they are not alone, and there is a large community of people like them out there ready to lend a helping hand. Everyone please stay safe and curious!

Excellent video, Peyton. As a former evangelical Christian, your deconversion story is very powerful. I appreciate your openness. I was a Christian until I was thirty, then explored other spiritual expressions before my theism eventually evaporated from lack of evidence. Wishful thinking can only carry us so far.

All the evidence you need is the new birth. Unless your are born again you can see or enter the kingdom of God. Jesus made that crystal clear. No need for any other evidence, because Jesus IS THE WORD OF GOD. "Other spiritual expressions" is a departure from the Living God and will only end in folly. Repent, (have a change of mind and heart toward sin and self) and trust in Jesus alone, come with the humility of a little child. He is Faithful, and will forgive you and receive you to Himself.

My question is: "If you knew Jesus and had a relationship with Him, how is possible to deny His existence? It's like saying I know my wife, but I am not sure she is real. You may have heard, we don't have "religion with Jesus" but we have a relationship. So, why did doubt, disbelief, and ultimately disobedience come into your life? Did you pick up another resource book to open up that door of departure from the faith?

@@christophergibson7155 It is inaccurate to say I am denying his existence. Perhaps he exists, but I am no longer convinced of it. Whatever I felt and experienced during those years was frustratingly ambiguous, and indiscernible from my own wishful thinking and longing. Prayer was rather like talking into a phone and waiting for a response, only to hear silence-or sounds that may or may not be someone on the other end. I assure you, I wanted communication, and verification of his presence. I want to believe true things; I do not want to believe things just because I want them to be true. @@TimH-pu2dd Perhaps, this has happened to you to let you stand back, and reconsider. May I encourage you not to give up. I was a backslider in heart for 20 years. I just recently came back to Jesus last year. I can confess that it is so much sweeter and real than it has ever been in my life. Yes, you will struggle with things you don't understand. Yet the scripture says over and over that The Lord is so very merciful and compassionate toward us. Even in our misunderstanding and strife. But prayer is a special place to pour out your thoughts, hurts, and struggles while walking with The Lord. I find in prayer that there are times of hearing that "still small voice" inside and I can rejoice in that comfort. I have cried many times out to God to move His hand on certain matters. Feelings come and go, but the faithfulness of God will always come through. If you have any area of unforgiveness, or resentment....confess and repent of that. We are in a spiritual warfare, so there are evil forces at work to try to get us to turn away from following The Lord. Even Jesus as you know was tempted. At the Mount of Olives Jesus was so engrossed in prayer that He sweated droplets of blood. "The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God." (Romans 8:16)

Good for you young man. I'm approaching 60 now and I never did believe it, even as a young child. Today I think that all religion has a certain amount of story telling value. People like to tell or write stories for a variety of reasons, whether it's to get a point across, or teach lessons about life, or just whatever it is that the imagination can dream up. I think that all religion was written as a form of human control, or possibly just as a form of entertainment. In any event, I think that all of religion is fiction. All of it. Every syllable. There's way too much of it that makes no sense in reality, the miracles in particular. "This happened because God," theists say, and it's bullshit. The supernatural cannot be proven, and theists scramble around like they can. It's hilarious to watch. Anyway go on like you are as an atheist, you have many years left. You'll be just fine without religion wasting your time.

Raw and uncut: What lots of people (even pastors) don't (yet) understand. God created us according to His own image and likeness. Godly. Mankind/the first Adam fell. The image of God in man got lost. That's why there is all this predicament on earth (selfishness, greed, lust, wars, sicknesses, death, etc). We are all born into that mess. For the fall of man a perfect atoning sacrifice had to be made.... that is what God did in Christ. With His own once and for all perefect sacrifice, He paid the debt for the fall of man for us, so we can be indwelled by His Spirit again and finally receive the divine life of the ages back, the first Adam let got of in the fall of man. An amazing act of grace and love by our creator. That is what you see happening in Christ's first disciples. They too healed all and walked in unselfish love. And yes.... that is still avaible today. The holy blood is in place, the Holy Spirit is here to give us understanding, power and transform us back to origin. Not to be debated about, but to be embraced and be-come. So: The Kingdom of God already came. Through Christ, in Spiritform, in those that understand. Hence the divine healing miracles we experience. God manifested in Christ to give us back the divine life mankind lost in the fall of Adam. Christ, the exact image of the invisible God. The image we were created after in Gen 1. The image we lost in the fall of man. The image that can be freely restored by Christ's blood and Holy Spirit working IN us. What a plan. What a solution. What a love. What a God. Jesus is amazing. It is the ultimate conclusion of the word and plan of God. God came full circle. He Himself stooped down from glory to restore us back to original created value: Christlikeness. Walking in divine healing power and unselfish love. Jesus, born of the Spirit of God, filled with the spirit of God. The "Son" of God, the incarnated word, God in the flesh. For three years He healed all, raised the dead, casted out demons, controlled nature, spoke pure divine truth. He said: "Follow Me. If you see Me, you see the Father. The Father and I are one. The glory I have IN My Father, I give to you. It pleases the Father to give you His Kingdom/Holy Spirit/divine nature. I will send Holy Spirit, the same as Me, He will be IN you, guide you into truth and give you explosive power. The same miracles i do, you will do too, because you will understand that the Father is IN Me and I am IN you. Freely I give you My Kingdom/Holy Spirit/divine nature, heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons, freely I give, freely share" Etc, etc, etc. I have experienced thousands of beautifull healing miracles through the power of Holy Spirit IN me already. Broken bones, cancers, covid, all kinds of infirmities healed in seconds. Demons manifesting and casted out by a simple "get out, in Jesus name". Jesus. De name above all names. In Him all power and wisdom is sourced and.... He calls us one with Him. God in man and man in God again. C'mon Jesus!! So.... again: God stooped down IN Christ to restore us back to Gen 1:27 were He said: "Let us make man according to our image and likeness and let them have authority.....": walk as Christ. Christ, the exact image of the invisible God. The image we were created after and being restored to by His atoning blood for the fall of man and indwelling Holy Spirit. You are free to receive this original divine life of the ages by Holy Spirit of Christ/God. Ask Him to guide you into truth. Read the Gospel of John and fall in love with your creator. You are not made for the fall of man and its effects, but for the image/glory of God and to walk like Christ. Holy Spirit is the guide and transforming power that will get you there. Amazing grace. A big leap in faith can be made when we start realizing we are already IN Christ, IN the last Adam. Free from the fall! Loved! Growing into awareness of our new (yet old) godly identity. Changing by Holy Spirit. The most fullfilled life ever. Paul healed all on Malta. He understood and wrote: "As in the first Adam ALL died (lost the divine nature), so also ALL were made alive IN Christ to walk in Zoë (= divine life) again". "IN Christ (the last Adam) we are co-cruisified (dead to the fall and its effects), co-raised (justified/made righteousness, holy, blameless, above reproach), co-seated (one with Him)" "The fullness of deity dwells in Christ and YOU HAVE BEEN MADE COMPLETE IN HIM, who is the head of every principality and power". So.... thank you Jesus! Thank you for redeeming me from the fall of man. Thank you for your Holy Spirit that makes this new (yet old) divine life come alive in me. You are amazing! In the shadow of Peter the sick healed... He understood too and wrote: "By Gods power (Holy Spirit) and knowing Christ, we have become partakers of the divine nature and have escaped the fall of man". The divine life of the ages has been returned to us by Jesus once and for all perfect atoning sacrifice for the debt of the fall of man and His indwelling Holy Spirit in us. Jesus/God is amazing!!! Ask Him to give you revelation and change you to the way it was before the fall of man: Christlikeness. He will do so. For it is written: "the Spirit brings forth after His own kind". "I have come to give you Zoë (divine life) in abundance...."

A couple things that hit me when first digging into this is that there is forgiveness of sin in the OT without the shedding of blood….what?? Of course there is other example where blood was shed, but it was for things like a misdemeanor: a guy mistakenly walks across the court of the temple. Ok that that’s kind of strange to sacrifice an animal for that. But the really big ones, like turning your back on god…He would simply forgive if the person repented. So does man needs the blood of Jesus? While we’re on the topic…Jesus ‘The Lamb of God’. In the OT the sacrificial Lamb was always female. To Adam and Eve. If god knew they were going to fall, why didn’t he just start all over? Basically god aim is to have a family. Why condemn the majority of humanity for something he could of started over? This is on God. And the serpent didn’t beguile them. He basically said the truth. After digging a little more, I found the gospels were filled with so many errors. So, I think faith is a good thing. Spiritual life is a good thing. Having what you feel is personal relationship with Jesus is a good thing. Just realize that beyond the bubble and lens of Christianity there are so many things that just don’t add up. In your zeal, imo, while everything you say from a christian perspective is true, it misses the mark.

But you would rather follow the devil, who by the way hates God and he hates us with a passion. What we need is spiritual guidance and assistance. This all comes from within and resonates through the Holy Spirit. Christianity is the only faith given by God, sustained by God and developed with God. No other faith ahs the Holy Spirit as a guide and assist remedy. The devil is the person responsible for all the suffering in this world motivating, killers, robbers, cheaters, envy, jealously hatred towards God and each other. This is why we need the Holy Spirit. Not just to be acceptable to God but truly accepted in society. Persecution comes but with it comes admiration.
