My Daughter Knew She Was Trans Aged 2 | MY EXTRAORDINARY FAMILY

SUBSCRIBE to Truly: bit.ly/Oc61Hj
NOELLA McMaher is a transgender model and activist. The 11-year-old walked the runway in New York Fashion Week for the first time at the age of 10 and went to her first protest at the age of six. Her parent, Asher said: “Starting at the age of two she was already telling us ‘I’m not a boy, I’m a girl’.” Noella legally transitioned at the age of seven and the family celebrated her name change with a surprise party. Her modelling career started in Chicago and she is believed to be the youngest transgender model to walk the runway in NYFW. She is proud to be bringing awareness to transgender people through her modelling and through her activism work. She said: “It’s important for me to go to protests to support people like me.” The family have been subjected to judgement and negativity with comments accusing Asher of ‘forcing’ or ‘abusing’ their child and they received a lot of backlash after Noella got hormone blockers. Asher said: “This process is under the purview of medical professionals, mental health professionals. It’s providing her the ability to continue living her life as who she is.” Asher, who is non-binary said: “Everyday I am in awe of who she has grown into.” They added that Noella inspired their own transition. Noella will be walking in more runway shows soon and will continue her activism work. She said: “No matter their age, people should be able to express who they are.”

What is child abuse is telling a kid that they're not allowed to express themselves the way they want to express themselves. It sounds more like the kid wanted to wear dresses and that wasn't "allowed for boys" so the kid said "well, I'm a girl, then". It's possible there are other, non-superficial elements, but even the parent said that it was a battle getting the kid dressed before the kid "transititioned" which is non-sensical of course. I can wear a dress or a suit or t-shirt and shorts or nothing and still be me. Who's responsible for telling kids they can't wear whatever clothes they want to (aside from insulting stuff, perhaps, like swears or racist stuff or similar things) based on their personal self expression?

@@nanaross3598 Um, obviously parents influence kids. That's a given. But the point is that kids have their own personalities, based on their own unique set of genes, which make them have preferences that differ from their siblings, and parents. So it doesn't matter what parents or culture a kid has when it comes to what they want for themselves. How that is expressed will be influenced by their environment, which is why in some cultures/families boys can wear dresses and not be thought of as "girly", while in others only "girls" are "allowed" to wear dresses. My question is, what does wearing dresses mean? Because clothing is arbitrary, and unimportant in the real world of being whomever you want to be. You can wear tights, baggy t-shirts, a kilt, a toga, a three-piece-suit, underpants, or nothing at all, and that doesn't change who you are. It's fine to identify as whatever you feels most meaningful to you, but please realize that superficial stuff like what you look like is pretty much irrelevant. It's what you do in life, creating and/or exploring something uniquely awesome, that's important. So, rather than ask what you're wearing, or how your hair is styled, or if you have painting on your face or body, I ask you: what do you want to learn about or make that will help some person, place, or thing get what they need?

Not like toys, interests, colors and so on are gender neutral. Nothing wrong with a girl playing basketball and climbing trees. Doesn't mean she is trans. @@NetiNeti-gm5bz A study back somewhere in the 2000s showed that the majority of kids around 70-90% with gender dysphoria would grow out of it by adulthood if just left alone Like this is the difference Child left alone: • Would be able to explore themselves, find their own self/identity • May even grow out of gender dysphoria and/or would acknowledge growing out of gender dysphoria and won't feel inclined to transition Child introduced to transness early on and fed directly the idea by the parent that they're trans: • Has the identity structured around the Child, doesn't leave much space for self exploration • If grown out of Gender-Dysphoria, may ignore it and still proceed with medical transition cause their whole life is pretty much structured around them "being trans" because of their parents It's one thing to let your child play in mommy's dress, it's another to immediately conclude that your child is trans because of it.

I wonder if 2 year old can even think about gender. Also, at that age kids get attracted to anything they fancy. This child fancied some girl dress and you decided to turn 'him' into 'her'. And no doctor in the world would say that 'ok you are a girl from now on'. Are you kidding? You yourself wanted to change your gender and decided that your child also wants to do the same and so you took no time to do it on your child first before the kid starts identifying himself as 'himself'. This is really a sorry state of the world.

Not saying that some body shapes/structures don't get in the way of leading a healthy life, because some do, so some folks will do better with artificial changes to their body, be it surgery for a "malformed" leg, or hormones to change one's emotional state, or braces to change one's teeth direction, but we would do well to be very careful whether the individual is themselves struggling with their body or if it's really a problem of harmful, irrational messages from the outside world telling them that they look wrong (like a boy wearing a dress).

'momdad' seemed not well defined, even now, and this way the story unfolds momdad was highly likely pulling her definition from her child, like living through her kid. Parents do that all the time, getting their identity from their kid, and to the kid's detriment. A kid doesn't know anything about trans issues, trans parades, making trans signs, learning the new language of trans without an adult guiding the process; so the kid carrying a sign at 6 at a trans parade was not taking the initiative to do this: momdad was. Momdad seems needy; as a mental health care provider I've seen this a lot, where a parent, most of the time a mom without much of her own self, gets overly involved in her child/children's life; helicopter parent, only in this instance, it's all about the kid's gender. In the old days it was 'beauty pageant' or 'cheer leader' mom's, this is today's version. This kid will now form her identity around her gender issues, which is NOT the deepest part of who she is, and will lead out in life with a 'gender' chip on her shoulder and will wonder why people avoid her. The only hope for this kid is to differentiate from mom emotionally, psychologically, spiritually and possibly relationally...then she'll need to differentiate from the trans culture and community she is presently surrounding herself with, only then might the kid be able to find her true self.

  • @thewiseturtle

All parents are imperfect, and end up raising kids in a smaller bubble of culture than the kid needs, in the long run. Which is why teenagers are so "rebellious", needing to explore all of the other kinds of community in the world, to see where they fit in the best. This is natural, and normal, and all we need is to make sure that kids and teens and younger adults have the freedom to do that exploring whenever they are ready, in as supported and healthy a space as possible.

The child only copies what the parents do. At his age he is discovering the world and wanting because his parents show him what is right for them. This is not OK. If at the adolescent age we don't know what we want, much less at such a young age. If as an adult he wants to transition to something else or do something else, let him do it, because he already has the mental, emotional and physical maturity to do it. This for me is aggression (unintentional, I want to believe) but it is, because the child's psyche is damaged, not allowing him to be what A Child is. The discourse of fighting against everyone because you are what you are is often blind. "Be proud of who you are" Obviously, if you are a responsible adult, yes. If you are a growing child you don't even know who you are.

Yes, the kid really had a choice. Did you not see how happy she was? Did you not see the other kids in the family (a boy close to her age)? Certainly there were cultural elements, especially with clothing it seems, where the kid was apparently told that boys aren't allowed to wear dresses, or something similar, but there is obviously something specific to the kid's own genetic makeup that guided them to want to express themselves as a "female" in at least some way. That's very normal for even very young kids. And even non-human primates have "gender expression" preferences as kids, choosing how to play with others based on cultural norms.

Regret is a healthy part of life. As long as the regret is from doing something meaningful, and trying to live honestly, it's good. Certainly I don't think it's a great idea to promote surgery, for anything elective, to kids or teenagers, or even twenty-somethings, but some things make sense, given the specific goals of the individual. Does someone with dwarfism want to lengthen their legs as a kid or teen? Or do they want to just be who they are, short legs and all? There's no one-size-fits-all answer (heh). Ideally we have really good counseling for making decisions like this. Alas, our medical industry is based on money, rather than health. So it's unlikely you'll find really good help for such choices. So you kind of have to just do your best, and be honest, and expect to regret some things in life, whether you're a kid, teen, twenty-something, etc. or a parent of a kid or teen.

@@thewiseturtle I am not saying regret is a bad thing. But regretting permanent irreversible things done to one's body is bad and very negative emotions that hard to regulate emotionally on the long term - for instance transitioning before even hitting puberty which is lead to castration, body modification, and, in most cases never reaching an orgasm.

@@z.s7328 Everything we do to our bodies is pretty much permanent, be it eating cake or riding a bicycle or choosing where to live. It's all choices that make us who we are. Regret is normal and healthy. We do our best to make good decisions for ourselves and with others we care about. That's how it's supposed to be. I think you're confused about hormone blockers. While they are still potentially problematic, they normally are pretty mild and harmless in the long run. But, again, anything we do is risky, even eating chocolate or walking to school. Just focus on making good decisions for yourself, and helping those you care about find good solutions for them, and apologize when things don't go as well as planned.

@@thewiseturtle @thewiseturtle Well comparing eating cake to taking hormones and puberty blockers does it for me... please stop with the pleonasm and cercular reasoning. Regret is healthy when it doesn't stick with one for life. If I eat a cake loaded with carbs and sugar and I might regret it but it won't stick with for life and I will forget about soon. If I have the same cake 6 times a day for a long period of time I will be obese and harm my body I will regret it as long as I can't change my situation. You are confused about PB. Read some scientific literature and you will see for yourself. Do you realise that we are talking about a child who is not allowed to have a tattoo, not allowed to vote yet they can switch genders and take hormones ??!! I don't give a damn if it's an adult but we are talking about kids.

@@z.s7328except the only medical intervention she has gotten currently are blockers which are completely reversible and only serve to pause puberty until she's a bit older and gets on hormones or maybe, changes her mind.

This is sick. Nothing else to be proud of here. Parent like this don't deserve kids.
