You have to be calm, the road is so ridiculous that you would find it hard to get angry

There's actually a logic to that mess and you have to remember that everything coming from the right has the right of way in this place. So your best bet is to actually know when you want to get out of it and plan accordingly before going in. For instance, if you come from Avenue Foch and want to get out on Avenue de la Grande Armée, you want to get to the most inner lane to not be bothered by exiting and entering traffic. If you come from Avenue d'Iena and want to get out on Avenue des Champs-Élysées, you better be on some of the most outwards lane as you're going to leave the roundabout pretty quickly and you'll have a hard time waiting for someone coming from the right to let you pass if you're stuck on the inner lanes wanting to cut the whole roundabout. And if you come from Avenue Kleber and want to get out at Avenue de Wagram for instance, it depends on the state of the traffic on the roundabout as you want to stay kind in the middle lanes, but if traffic is heavy, you want to be a little bit closer to the center, and when it's really light, you want to be a little further away from the center. Expect heavier traffic coming from Champs-Élysées wanting to get out at Avenue de la Grande Armée and having the same plan as yours at certain hours though.

Thank you so much for explaining how this roundabout works! I was really wondering what are the chances someone would explain the principles of this particular intersection. I always knew that you ought to pick the most inner lane when you are exiting on the farthest exit and the most outer lane when your exit is the closest. I was wondering if the same principle of those who are inside the intersection have right of way against those who enter it and thanks to this video, I know that this doesn't apply here 😂

@@DerWaschbar2 After review, my walkthrough is incomplete because there's the very real possibility to get a selfie stick on your windshield in the innermost lanes. Last time I went through it, my friend driving actually got a selfie stick stuck in his front-left window because some Chinese girl wanted to have a nice selfie with Arc de Triomphe. It was awkward to stop in the middle of the roundabout and me risking my life exiting the vehicle on the right side to give back everything.

@@dastanjan320 When you're inside the intersection the ones that enter the roundabout come to you from the right and thus have preference. That's why you must take the inner lanes when your exit is not comming soon.

The applause at the end is pertinent, I’d honestly feel proud of myself if I had made it out of one of the biggest and busiest roundabouts ever, totally unscathed. Either way, seems like they had a lot of fun … which can only happen if you’re not the one driving :P

I did the same, only difference is we were all screaming at each other, and me saying shut up shut up shut up, I can't focus. They won't let me go! Heeey let me go!! no applause, just returned silently to the hotel.

That roundabout is a piece of Cairo traffic in the middle of Paris.

Thanks for sharing! We were there recently and found the traffic around the Arc most entertaining.

No lanes,like everyone is deciding when to go. Ppl crossing were most likely tourist,I hear some are unaware of the tunnel underground that is a lot safer..glad it was a safe trip.

Well done! I remember the first time I drove in France in an old vauxhall cavalier. I had no idea this roundabout existed. We got to it and wow. No sat nav to help. We wanted to see the eiffel tower, saw it, and just headed to that exit. Had to go round twice. It was hilarious and actually good fun. Since then I found out about how infamous it was and was quite proud!

Like going over Victoria falls in a barrel.. well done you made out the other end. I have an Arc badge for bravery too..

It's a shame French Connection II was in Marseilles. A car chase through this would have been insane.

1:22 That was a banalisee, an undercover police car, I know, it doesn't look like one but it is!

This could possibly be fixed by marking lanes and creating split islands in the incoming streets to turn it into a proper roundabout.

Um very brave move, congrats. hard to tell which direction everyone is going, there have to be cheeky and a bit daring, local principle that there is no need for lane lines, but avoid the inner part of the roundabout, you can't get out there...

Makes no sense. Vehicles in the roundabout should have the right-of-way, i.e., you should not enter the roundabout until there is space to do so. That way it will clear (eventually).

@@noefillon1749 It seems to work a lot better than that mess. If people can't get out of the roundabout, gridlock is inevitable. he roundabout should have right-of-way! So you have right-of-way to get into the roundabout and then as soon as you are in you have to yield to everyone entering. Is there any possible way that the roundabout won't fill up even with moderate traffic loads? It will really take ages to get in when it is full, and everyone in the roundabout has to yield and hence cannot get oud.

@@stevenhs8821 I don't have a lot of experience there but usually most of the incoming traffic comes from 2 or 3 main entrances so the roundabout is never totally full but it usually slows a lot at some places of the ring. I think when the traffic is stuck, people who want to stay in go to the innermost lanes and they are less bothered by the incoming or outgoing traffic. Moreover when you are not near the edge and there is a lot of traffic, you don't know where the car in front of you is coming from (and you are stuck so you want to go) so you don't yield. In Paris usually when the traffic is slow, the more you force your way in, the faster you get through (not only in the Arc de Triomphe). So I think that this rule doesn't really apply when the traffic is completely stuck. About changing the rule... I don't know but it seems that this is a trick the municipality have found to help the traffic flow as the rule is the same for the 4-lane-each-way ringroad around Paris. Usually you stay on the 3 left most lanes and go to the rightmost one only when you go in and out (even though normally you are supposed to stick to the right when you are not overpassing, I think you start understanding that practical drive - not switching lane each time someone comes in - comes before the rules, especially in Paris)

@@stevenhs8821 I'd say the biggest problem here is that it can look like a big roundabout, but not so much if we consider that it connects 12 different streets. I do agree with you, except that 12 streets connected to it is madness, it cannot work with so many ins and outs, even as a normal roundabout, not at that size. I would argue that only having 2 lanes is strictly superior, too, like a normal roundabout would have, instead of this… abomination. But what other roundabout of that size do we know connects 12 streets ? Surely there are others, but are they flowing better ? I'm not sure. I'd say condemn the 6 most minor connections, and turn the whole thing into an actual, normal roundabout with rules as you described. Currently the average amount of traffic (believe it or not, the traffic in the video seems to be light traffic, this is definitely not rush hour) would clog up every street anywhere near the roundabout because yes it would be flowing, but it would indeed take way too long to get in. Hence condemning the most minor connections so that the entire thing can flow better and redistribute traffic like a normal roundabout.
