I don't know a lot about this Tom Waits guy but he seems to have an interesting story arch. Releasing some 'normal' sounding albums in the 70s like Closing Time, Nighthawks At The Diner, Small Change and The Heart of Saturday Night. His music seem to have take a weird turn in the 80s, releasing albums like Swordfishtrombones and arguably his most popular album to date, Rain Dogs.
Today, my dad shows me a bunch of songs from Tom Waits. This video is my reaction of Tom Waits and my review of Tom Waits!

As an elder millennial I'm proud to say that my late Dad was the one to introduce me to the genius of Tom Waits. I am still grateful for this.
Now we have the confirmation that your dad is a 20th century zoomer, he can't listen to songs over 3 minutes even if he likes it. You should make him listen to 1000 gecs, memes aside the song are at the right length for him.

Hahahaha I can barely get through 1000 gecs so it would be funny to see my dad react to it
As a zoomer I adore Tom Waits, it's weird how his music fits the pessimism and irony we use today to survive the everyday life as the 21th century's children.

There's nothing new under the sun and people were in despair long before the zoomers, lol. Everyone goes through a time in their life where everything sucks, your generation just happens to be going through it at a time where the entire western world (well, world writ-large) is on the brink of collapse. Good news for you guys is you'll probably live long enough to see the golden age that comes after. Gen X and older, probably not.

Makes sense that your dad is open to stuff you show him now! Y'all have a very sweet relationship. I wasn't really into this era or really most of it but, he has much weirder stuff as well as much more solemn and introspective stuff
You've got a cool dad. I had to find Tom Waits on my own, like some musical orphan wandering through the music stores (it was a store that had these things called "CD's" and "Vinyl", you payed $15-$20 for a thing called an "album", a collection of music that generally had a theme tying it together...) Tom Waits is a tough one to get into. When I first heard him I was interested but kind of repulsed. Then I'd listen again a few months later, kind of abandon it again. Then one day you'll have it pop into your head and it's like "what is that wonderful song?!" Go back and all of a sudden it just clicks. That how it worked for me. Now he's one of the few artists that I always keep on my phone, the entire body of work. Kind of like the Grateful Dead; "They aren't the best at what they do, they're the only that do what they do" - Bill Graham - Micheal Scott
Waltzing Matilda means drinking or drunk. That's what Tom told me at McGlinchy's bar on 15th Street in Philadelphia back in 1973 or 4. That was right before he met Ricky Lee Jones. Tom is America's last great beatnick and one of the coolest people I ever met.
Your dad is 100% on the money. Tom Waits is a gift to music. You'll appreciate being introduced to him years from now. See Tom while he's still touring, if you can. It's so rare to get to see living legends. He has been covered by everyone. Bruce Springsteen, The Ramones, Gogol Bordello, The Eagles, Robert Plant/Allison Krauss, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Rod Stewart, Tori Amos, EVERYONE. Look up TV appearances, especially "Chicago " and "Chocolate Jesus" on Letterman. Tom Waits jokes(?) he is banned from the YMCA, so I have a playlist for the gym. Some tracks for the uninitiated (in case the stranger stuff turns you off): "Hope I Don't Fall In Love With You" ; "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" ; "God's Away on Business" ; "Blue Skies" ; "Make It Rain" ; "Satisfied" ; "All the World is Green" ; "Goin' Out West" ; "Hell Broke Luce" ; "Rains On Me" ; "That Feel" ; "Martha" ; "Please Call Me Baby" ; "Way Down in the Hole" ; "Drunk on the Moon" ; "Jersey Girl" ; "Cold Water" ; "Hold On" ; "Downtown" ; "House Where Nobody Lives" ; "Downtown Train" . He was guest vocals on "Tommy the Cat" by Primus.
I loved this video, as always. Can't wait for more videos with your dad!

Please do more! I don't get to see this type of thing on youtube very often and it would be interesting to see young people react to certified classics with fresh eyes.
Tom Waits: a classic, never goes out of style ~~ you can't go out of style if you are a true artist ~~ you are never in "style", you are your own, that reaches across generations, across genres ~~ you don't fit in one, you are singular, you are timeless. There is no other Tom Waits, no one like Tom Waits. Our art evolves, as we evolve, as we age, as we grow, as we change, yet remain the same, somehow we always know a Waits song, no matter what era it is from ~~ it will hit you in the gut, always.

Tom Waits is my favorite artist, and he has like 4 albums in my top 20 oat. However, some other albums that I hold to that level of esteem are Bottomless Pit, Twin Fantasy, AFUT, and Schlagenheim (all of which are at least adjacent to albums that Jason has been skeptical about) so take that pops

@@KyleReidMu ooh ok if you're gonna check out a full album there are two directions you can go. If you want to look into his 70s sound, you can't go wrong with Small Change, and then check out Nighthawks and Blue Valentine. If you're more intrigued by his more experimental 80s-present output, I would start with Rain Dogs, then Bone Machine, then my personal favorite of his Mule Variations, then probably Real Gone. There's a lot of amazing albums in between each of these but these feel like the essentials to get a full understanding of his style. His voice is hard to get used to but once it clicks there's nothing better.

I found your channel today and I've watched several of these already, great wholesome content about sharing what you love between generations. I just wanted to comment that I was a little disappointed your dad stuck to the 70s so much (I think you got a little from Bone Machine, but songs like "Earth Died Screaming" and "Hell Broke Luce" are mostly what I think of when I think of Waits), but didn't even show you "The Piano Has Been Drinking"! Take a listen~

Yes Tom Trauberts blues is based on the song waltzing Matilda but it also has its own meaning. The song is about sharing your feelings of despair and loneliness and desperately trying to get people to understand. A “Matilda” is a bundle of things. Like a hobo carrying his things at the end of a pole so he can move easier. “To waltz a Matilda” just means to get your things and get out to the world without an plan or a future. Basically a song is asking who will share this lonely life with me.
this whole time your dad had a weird music taste too. huge plot twist

Good to see a fellow Jason loving Tom Waits. I'd heard a few of his songs in various movies I'd watched as a kid but I only really discovered his music when I turned 20. Pretty sure the first one that truly got me was "God's Away on Business," a banger. (Also the Black Rider album is crazy, especially "Oily Night")
Just to add my two cents, Tom Waits is my go to music when I am down. Specially the 70's Tom Waits. It doesn't pick me up, it catalyses the brewing so I can get ready to lift myself back up again. Fortunately I have not need Tom Waits as much nowadays but I still listen from time to time because he can still be enjoyed when the sun is shining.

Interesting.. I'll have to check that out
The Waltzing Mathilda part is twofold. He wrote the song after being in Denmark and performing on danish television. He was accompanied on stage by a danish violinist, whose name is Mathilda. She wanted to show him the town afterwards and so they did. Drank and danced all night. So he literally went waltzing Mathilda. It is also an Australian folk song. The title is australian slang for travelling on foot with a bundle with your belongings slung over your back. It's one of the most beautiful songs written.
I absolutely love Tom Waits music. I’ve never seen someone my age that actually knows who he is (I guess I’m an old soul) or listens to his music lol my two favorites songs of his are hold on and clap hands. Hold on is personally my favorite song of his, and one of my favorite songs of all time period. He also did a really crazy narration on the Primus song “Tommy the Cat”.
I love early Tom Waits, especially his 1st album. "I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You" is one of my all time favorite songs!
Well, Tom Waits and Animal Collective are among my favorite artists, so you guys have a cool household going on there.

Tom Waits is one of my favorite artists, his musical evolution is amazing, how can someone go from making an album like Closing Time (Jazz/Blues), to Swordfishtrombones (Experimental rock/jazz/blues), Tom has become my 2nd favorite singer, just behind Mike Patton, but that might change soon
Dad does a great vocal impersonation of Tom Waits.

God I love Tom I never expected to see this video.
I’ve always seen Chocolate Jesus as a commentary on our consumerism and addictions and how those have become the things we worship these days. Waits is using chocolate/candy/sugary foods as a stand-in for our need for instant gratification and that “high” we desire, but that is ultimately destructive and leads to the “crash” down the line.
This was cute ,but yes lol I honestly prefer 80s,90s and 2000s Tom Waits . I just think it was more Theatrical, Expressive, more experimental and more out there.
A friend introduced me to his music about 20 years ago. My first experience was him performing on Letterman with an electric garage lantern hanging from his shirt. If I remember right, the song was More Than Rain. After that I got a copy of Swordfish Trombones. So my intro was the "weird" Tom. Closing Time, Small Change and Night Hawks At the Diner were revelations. He was already, with the stranger stuff, an artist I was beginning to really like. Hearing him croon those ballads made me start to love him. Today he is among my 10 favorite artists ever. In any medium. I mean actors, painters, any artist. Waits is in my top ten favorites. He also, on top of being a great musician and singer and songwriter, is a fantastic actor.
Gunstreet Girl better make an appearance.

Y'know it'd be pretty interesting if y'all made this the format: you get one, he gets one, and on and on; could see pivoting to a more collaborative dynamic having some broad appeal (but if this your solo creative thing and you're trying to keep it that way that makes sense, too.)
the day has come
I've been listening to Tom Waits since back in 1975. I'm 63 and he's definitely on my bucket list!
Love Dad's style in music
Im the same as as the dad here, and agree with him 100% with him on liking Tom's Elektra (70s) label period. But one has to admire how Tom can reinvent himself as successful as he has. I also love the Mule Variatons disk a lot myself. After posting this comment, i think that pop in Heart of Saturday Night and enjoy my evening.
Wholesome
If you can get your hands on the Orphans Albums (collection of unreleased Tom Waits songs), I would very much recommend you give it a listen, particularly 'Bawlers' (Orphans is made up of 3 albums, Bawlers, Brawlers, and Bastards). It's mostly slower ballads and the like, and it's absolutely beautiful.
My personal favorite Tom Waits song is Ruby's Arms but his whole catalog is great.
My favorite song on "Closing Time" is "Old Shoes and Picture Postcards "
wait, isn't this just classic car seat headrest??

What happened to Blue Valentine??? One of my favorites. Or Foreign Affair???? I have everything before Swordfishtrombones. To weird after that.
I think when he started kind of going into left field, it was more like performance art. Good example, swordfish trombone My favorite album nighthawks at the diner
goated album
tom waits a goated figure in art fs
Brilliant song.
"Then he got weird, I'm not exactly sure what happened..." He got married.
Coming from someone who has just in the last year went far down the rabbit hole of 'Folk Punk' I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of bands from that sub genre were inspired by Tom Waits stuff. Definitely some similarities.
You should make your dad listen to Swans. He won't get bored at all :)
I won't be satisfied until you both react to the entirety of Real Gone, the original version (or bone machine)
I recommend starting with Rain Dogs, because Marc Ribot's guitar is just plain great.
To my understanding, his big turning point before Swordfishtrombones was that he met his future wife, Kathleen Brennan. Both of them were into weird, avantgarde music, but Tom had never quite built up the nerve to let it show in his own stuff. She encouraged him to go for it, and also came to be a pretty integral part of the creative process. I think they were essentially a duo from that point on, at least in terms of songwriting. As for his voice, there are old demos of him at like 19 or 20, already sounding tired and husky. His voice did get noticeably more gravelly in the 80's, but ironically, he actually quit smoking and drinking around that time. It was always primarily a storytelling choice. His style tends to make people underestimate him, but his fundamentals are pretty strong. He sounds the way he does because he wants to. This is what I've pieced together anyway, though the tricky thing about Waits is that he's had a longstanding practice of deliberately misleading people about his personal life, so it's hard to know what's true and what isn't.
You’re dad pretty cool. Hope you pick up some of his cool taste in music 👍

I was introduced to Waits with Swordfishtrombones. I didn't get it, and I didn't exactly enjoy it, but something kept drawing me back again and again. Through all the weirdness was woven great melodies, and the lyrics. Oh, the lyrics! Shore Leave, A Soldier's Things, Swordfishtrombone! To me he goes beyond musician and songwriter to bard! He is weird America's bard!
