Just after the solo part… The sound you hear that’s different is him using the Wah-Wah pedal. In addition, he rarely played the solo like it was on the album and this song is no exception. While he used elements from the record, this solo is 95% improvisation…. CRAZY!! Great job guys!!

Considering the technology that existed in live performances in those days, this one is a banger! I was just a kid when this came out, but I had older cousins who listened to this. This was a great time to be alive; when there was music like this.

'I'm A Man' is a must where the three verses are sung by the three group singers, Peter, Terry and keys player Robert Lamm. The trombonist is James Pankow who also had a minor hand in writing. The title refers to the time of 25 or 26 minutes to 4am. Apparently a sleepless night trying to write a song. Terry Kath apparently shot himself while cleaning his own gun. Sad day. His guitar work had tremendous power.

It's a great dad who introduces his son to classic Chicago! 😁 This is my favorite band in the history of EVER!! Terry Kath was a BEAST!! Easily one of the best and most underrated guitar players of all time. A slight correction to the Jimi Hendrix story: Chicago was actually opening for Hendrix in their early years, so he was able to hear Terry's genius on a nightly basis for a while, so that's when he made that comment. Great reactions you guys!!

  • @ranger-1214

James Pankow was the trombonist and leader of the brass section. He recounted that backstage at the Whiskey A Go Go Jimi said "you have a horn section that sounds like it's one lung, and a guitarist better than me. How'd you like to tour with us?" So they became the opener for the 1969 tour. I was a freshman at Oklahoma University in 1970 when Chicago played the campus Field House. A great memory that gets better through the years. The loss of Terry in 1978 definitely affected the dynamic of their music going forward. They thought about breaking up, but instead hung together and did the song "Alive Again" as a memorial tribute. Even at my old age, the 60's and 70's music takes me back and it's amazing how many great artists and performances we enjoyed back then.

My older brother was a music major and played trombone at our local university. He introduced me to Chicago and I gradually saw them 4 times before Terry Kath died. My sons took me to see them in the late 90s. They seemed to be old friends, but Walt Parazaider (saxes, flute, flugelhorn) was, in my mind, the leader. He was offered a professorship at his University at graduation but decided to try playing in a different way, and sought out friends who got together and played in his parents' basement in Chicago.. They were each very skilled on their instruments and if you listen to some of their early music, like the album with Introduction, you will hear some great playing. And of course, Walt Parazaider played the beautiful flute solo on Color My World, from the grey album. I still listen to those guys in my car, as well as some 90s bands. Thanks for highlighting this!

Pete Cetera needs a special mention since he sings and play awesome bass lines simultaneously. A bit sad that he became the poster boy for their commercial ballad faze of the eighties. So many good bands went that route like Journey and REO Speedwagon.

Born in ‘77 I was blessed not only to live in a truly amazing time and place but on the radio was a blend of new 80’s hits and the greats from the 70’s were still very popular. Nothing will ever touch that time for me and especially nothing will ever even come within shouting distance of the greatest 30 yr era of music between “65 & “95. Wish I could turn back time but sadly we can never go home again.

Terry Kath died in 1978, when he visited Don Johnson, one of Chicago’s roadies, at his home in Los Angeles. Kath had been known to enjoy target shooting and frequently carried guns on his person. At Johnson’s, the guitarist began to play with his .38 revolver, spinning it around on his finger, then suddenly pointing at his head and pulling the trigger. Naturally, Johnson got nervous and asked Kath to stop. However, Kath insisted that his guns were empty and that the magazines weren’t even in. He picked up his 9mm pistol and spoke his last words, “What do you think I’m going to do? Blow my brains out?” To reassure Johnson, Kath showed him the empty magazine, reinserted it into the weapon, put it to his temple and pulled the trigger. Tragically, perhaps unbeknownst to Kath, the gun was loaded, because even though he cleared the magazine, he evidently failed to clear the chamber. He died instantly from the gunshot wound, at the age of 31. Several of Kath’s friends and bandmates have insisted that the incident was indeed an accident despite their prior worries over his mental health. However, Danny Seraphine also noted that Kath’s preferred combination of drugs and guns was always likely to end up in tragedy.

The legend is that Hendrix was asked in an interview, "What is it like to be the world's greatest guitarist?", and Jimi replied, "Why don't you ask Terry Kath?"... but the same story gets told with other guitarists in Kath's place, such as Johnny Winter, so it might well be apocryphal.

Just have to say.... Robert Lamm (keyboards) does not yell... "TAKE CARE" at the end of the song.... he yells "TERRY KATH" who just tore it UP! Its still quite a moment and I saw them open for Jimi Hendrix at the Forum in April of 1969 (my 1st arena show)... its a great story....look it up & enjoy some MORE! Cheers\'23 ps... 1 of the 1st times I saw CTA (their name at the time & they were the house band at the time) was at "The Whiskey" in LA in the last century and 1 night the place was so packed (Jimi was there that night too) we had to stand on the stage with the band during a set.... there's an unforgettable. 😉

As a horn player I loved, LOVE, Chicago. While you're at it, if you've not done it, Kansas and CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SON, and Doobie Brothers LONG TRAIN RUNNING (live at wolf run) will rock you.

Great choice by Dad. Silas, you'll want to check out more Chicago, in particular the music produced by the original lineup which was some of the greatest musical talent ever assembled. The band was never the same after Terry Kath's tragic and untimely death in 1978. He was an absolute beast on lead guitar.

Yes, they were from Chicago. The guys were all some of the best players in a variety of working bands around the city. They found the right chemistry to create their own style. They really honed their craft at some Chicago clubs before producer Jim Guercio moved them to LA and started producing one of the most unique bands of the late 60's and early 60's. If you get a chance there is a really good documentary called the Terry Kath Experience that documents a lot of the history of the band with interviews of the surviving original members. Terry's daughter spearheaded the effort to put this together. One of the great moments is her discovering her dad's guitars as he left them in there original cases at the home of her step-grandmother.

The lost of Kath completely changed the nature of the band. As you can see, the Kath era was a completely different feel.
