During this era there were seven members, all in their prime. They had played together for years in and around greater Chicago as a music hall/ dance band before writing and recording their own music. They had all developed serious chops by the time they started calling themselves the Chicago Transit Authority in 1967.

As they are still touring today with Robert Lamm (keyboards/vocals) James Pankow(trombone) and Lee Loughnane (trumpet). They still perform the whole suite of Ballet for A Girl in Buchannan today ... Lee usually does the Colour My World vocal as a tribute to his friend Terry.

You hit the nail on the head Nick when you mentioned Bach. Interviews with James Pankow the composer of that long piece admits that he was very influenced by the Brandenburg concertos when composing that suite. My first show of Chicago was 1972. They were premiering Saturday in the Park (fifth album) I had front-row and then when the crowd rushed the stage we abandoned our front row seats and stood right in front of the stage just below the great Terry Kath. ✌️😎

James Pankow quotes Jimi who was touring with them as coming up to him and saying "I dig your band...your horn section sounds like one set of lungs...and your guitar player is better than me." The video is on here. Also look closer. He is playing upstrokes down stroke and any other stroke you can think of. One of the keys to Terrys playing is his RIGHT HAND. A masterful right hand. A SOULFUL right hand.

Just a few comments: The sax solo in Movin' In is one of my all time favorites. In The Country is probably my favorite Chicago songs - every thing about it just rocks. From Terry Kath's vocals to Danny Seraphine's incredible drum fills, to the absolutely righteous guitar riff at the end - Wow, must wow. I have played the sax/flute part on Ballet for a Girl in Bucannon a few times. My favorite part is watching the people dancing have their arms and legs fly off during the 9/4 part at the end. Finally, while the audio was crappy (what the hell, it was the seventies - watch the guy crawling around on stage trying to fix the drum mics), I was really pleased to see that there is a live version of Introduction. Thanks for all this!

Thanks, Nick, especially for the extra song on a long video. Spotify breaks up the medley into individual sections on Chicago Ii, so I thought this would be preferable. Also been thinking about Terry Kath, who really shines in the live performance. The most senseless death in the history of rock and roll (basically showing a friend that a gun wasn’t loaded, when it really was). The whole group is so young and vital here. But the music still sounds fresh, more than 50 years later!

"The song "Introduction" originally opening their first L.P. but opening song at Tanglewood has one of the most awesome solo breaks they ever performed... Kath literally shreds with such precision and was in the zone... as a jazz guitarist it's totally mesmerizing. You and Lex really need to watch that whole Tanglewood concert footage together. The clips you watched are recorded from a larger piece of footage is why the sound is not so great on introduction.

This jazzy track is killer, they usually don’t deep dive into that genre.. standard ‘horns’ are the a trumpet, trombone and sax (reed of course) but those three were classically trained at DePaul university and could and did play many horn/ reed instruments in their songs - flute, piccolo, anything..

My favorite band in high school- saw them 6 times between 1970 and 1975! Nick, I would love it if you and Alexia would react to "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" from the album. It really is perfection. Back in my high school days, "Color My World" was a very popular slow dance song. I learned to play and sing it by ear on the piano, playing the bass line in octaves with my left hand, and proceeded to teach it to many of my friends in choir. Buy Chicago II- the whole album is great! Thanks, JK, for bringing more Chicago into our friends' lives! 🎵❤️🎵 Debbie

To say Chicago was "ahead of its time" is both an understatement and dis-service to the talent and virtuosity of these people. I am so thankful now to have lived through the 70's when this level of talent was the norm, and not the exception. Their use of dissonance and resolution is phenomenal. The genius level can be compared to Bach, Beethoven, Motzart, et.al, and the song structure is more aligned with classical music than modern 12 bar blues, but it is not true jazz either. I used to sit at the piano as a broken hearted teenager plinking out "Color My World", wishing I had just a thimbleful of the talent that these guys had. Nice reaction.

Nothing like some early Chicago. Hadn’t seen this concert footage so was a real treat. The sound on the Buchannon suite was great and so was the visual. Re Introduction it is always frustrating how the sound engineers never can get it right out of the gate with the sound though. You just don’t see performances like this anymore. Well I guess you can, but not in really popular music artists. Everything is sampled and auto-tuned, and I absolutely despise both effects. These guys were great singers and players; live or in the studio. Great marathon. PS… man based on Nick’s comments at the end a Hendrix marathon, including some live footage, is badly needed…

It was my first concert ever and I still remember every note (I wish) saw them ever year until 1978 right before Terry’s accident. I’ve seen them a few times since then and it’s not quite the same. Apologies to the others but he left a hole that no one could fill. On a side note Nick, you’ve developed a tick that I don’t think you’re aware of. When something really moves you, you have this habit of hissing “ssssss”. It really distracts from the experience because it lays over the top of the music. Just some constructive criticism, I hope you don’t take it the wrong way. Thanks!

Colour My world is the cut out that was popular at school dances. Also there was somebody else with a camera at Tanglewood. That is what you saw with ... Introduction... and why the sound is not as good.

Nick, there's a better sounding version of Introduction and the Ballet in the video link below. Introduction is the first song played and the Ballet is at the 1 hour 9 minute mark. And yes, the ballad part of the Ballet that you're referring to is Colour My World. kzread.info/dash/bejne/kaN10bWTYtyXk9o.html

This band was so good and definitely not the same without the writing, vocals and of course the guitar work of Terry Kath. They put out some good, commercial tracks after Terry and up until Peter Cetera and Danny Seraphine; left the band. From that time on, with the multiple member changes, they became a soft rock, top 40 genre music, type of band.

Nick, here's the link to the official full concert video. There are many videos from this show, some have different camera angles and different sound. The opening song is Introduction and you will notice the sound and camera angle selection is different from the Introduction clip you watched. kzread.info/dash/bejne/kaN10bWTYtyXk9o.htmlsi=8Ay7dkiloIlhHuq8 And yes, Terry Kath was a guitar and vocal GOD!

For me, the band's first six studio albums (No. 4 was live) were unbelievable. For me, they began to lose their steam after, before Terry's unfortunate death.

This tour was my first concert one state over in NY either the day before or after. I was never the same. Chicago lost there way after Terry's death and David Foster took over writing . He also stole Peter Cetera away from them. My opinion. They made some $$$$ I guess. I hope. Terry put the "Go" in Chicago. Watch him as musical director on the live show. They all look to him.

Chicago was burnt out after Chicago X with the touring and drugs, they lost their zest and their writing became mediocre. They were in a funk and their record company dropped them. David Foster comes in, gives them a new 80s sound and brings them back and they keep going.

Damn, Lee was so sloppy on trumpet in the Ballet. I was an avid Chicago fan from CTA till Terry died and I saw them 3 times in concert (first time in 1973 at MSG, with Springsteen as an opener!) but I never liked them live.
