It seems to highlight the real life awkwardness and surprises of getting to know another person, and a sort of attempt to communicate in miscommunication. A nice brick to the face compared to fantasies where only minor things go wrong, or the major obstacles are things like "he already has a boyfriend/girlfriend" as opposed to the major obstacle also being the goal.

Sometimes words are not needed. The video reminded me of the day that we just sat silently smoking, until I used the crotch of his cut off Levi's to stub my cigarette out. Then I just waited for him to finish his cigarette and use my leather shorts to grind it out. The tension was awesome.

I think the director/writer Diemo Kemmesies purposely uses very little dialogue so that each audience member can formulate what the movie means to them individually. A lot of people seem to think Kirill is mentally unstable. I think he's just broken inside and feels like he's not worthy of love. He couldn't love his wife because he's gay. He tried to make friends with strangers in Moscow and got robbed, beaten up and his pants were stolen.. Did he get raped? His dad and him don't talk much. He doesn't seem to think that Marlo could possibly be interested in him or love him because no one else really does. He's afraid to open up. But Marlo sticks with him and shows Kirill that he is lovable. I think Kirill was in the car by himself and flipped it, trying to take his own life. That's why I find the movie so interesting. It's open to individual interpretation.

Good thing for subtitles. I could only hear about every fifth word. Silent Youth must be a reference to how softly everyone is speaking.
