Getting paid what you're worth. Employers will squeeze as much labor out if you as they can get for as low as they can pay you. You, the worker, should have that same attitude toward your salary. Take as much as you can get. And to do that you need to know what your colleagues are making.

Yes! Businesses pay their workers as little as possible. If someone is uninformed over what they should expect to be paid, they might accept a pay that’s lower than they’re entitled to. If you talk with other people then you’ll either find out that you need to demand a raise for yourself or that you all need to go on strike because nobody’s getting paid. It would also help cancel discrimination because the salaries are out in the open. Businesses should be held accountable for paying their employees fairly instead of doing everything they can to rip them off. They make millions/billions. They can more than afford to pay their workers more-two or three times as much in some cases for minimum wage workers.

I know what my coworkers make and use that to negotiate (not blatantly obvious) and my coworkers do the same. This is my first job and it helps me to realistically negotiate with my boss and to see the ‘tricks’ they use.

You don't need to know someone else salary to validate your own. The reason you want to know someone else salary is so that you can argue that your worth to the company is more or the same as an individual who might be making more than you. People's salary is where the line from professional to personal is crossed. The job is what you do for a living, and your salary is how you eat, pay rent, pay your bills, etc. It is quite offensive when a co-worker tries to fish that information from me, and I tell them so. This proclamation for others to give up their privacy has to stop! Learn to negotiate, and don't rely on using others to establish your own worth.

@ Terena Rosa Of course, it makes sense for an employee to get upset when they found out one employee is making more than they are, especially, if the employee has a 4 year college degree and he or she is getting paid less than someone who doesn't have a college degree! An employee most likely isn't going to turn against their employer, because that's their bread and butter. I can certainly relate to this, because this happen to my daughter a few years ago, she and a co-worker were having a casual conversation about their salaries, when my daughter mentioned her salary her co-worker got extremely upset when she found out my daughter was making more than her, especially since my daughter had only been on the job for just a few months and her co-worker had been there for 2 years. My daughter didn't know any better at the time, she assumed everyone was getting the same pay, she learned her lesson to Never discuss her salary with a co-worker ever again!

What an immature person! Her beef is with the people who decide her salary, NOT YOU lmao. To be honest, I don't think you screwed up - it's very taboo to discuss salary but I think that idea is perpetuated because it protects the "higher ups." They don't want us to compare and consider our "worth." I had a brief (and civil) conversation with a coworker about how much she made and discovered she was making significantly less than me, but had very similar qualifications. She spoke to management and was able to get a raise. Your ex coworker was very wrong to ostracize you like that - her issue is with those who decide the salary. If she were wise, she would've met with them to discuss how she felt it was "unfair" but at the end of the day, she handled it poorly. I personally believe salary should be discussed openly but CIVILY. Clearly your ex coworker couldn't do that lol

I don’t necessarily believe salary should be discussed openly unless you’re comfortable with creating jealous enemies and destroying your once peaceful work environment. I’ve learned to negotiate salary later on in life but I do remember being young and naive and letting “close” coworkers know whenever I would receive a raise, those coworkers eventually turned into office enemies. Make your money in silence, progress in life in silence and let your lifestyle make the noise ESPECIALLY if you’re black. Black women and men are the scape goat to make other races feel better about themselves financially so if others in the office know you’re getting paid more and you’re a person of color it really triggers a nerve. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re racist, it’s just a part of the media and the American culture we all play a role in which is subconsciously racist.

If people are working in the same job title and same tenure, they should make the same. Employees are being paid for the work they do, not how well they "argue" in an interview. Normally women and POC gets paid less for no reason, and if everyone is open about their salary, this kind of mistreatment can’t be hidden. It would also encourage employees to go and negotiate for better treatment if they know others are getting paid more. La vaca que ri Kelly worked there longer and she had more experience. If you were actually listening to the story Kelly caught up to her and surpassed her. Did you forget about the part where Kelly was talking about she had a fire lit under her butt and it made her work harder and she started getting praise from people. Realistically coworkers are never going to be paid the same. If you have a better position you’re going to make more if you been working there longer you’re going to make more.

This is the hypocrisy of the equal pay outrage. My sister is in HR and she informed me that companies can pay employees different salaries for the same job as long as it’s within a “margin!” So why is that nugget of info not explained by our politicians? It’s actually LEGAL.

Ok, but can we appreciate how you have the skill to negotiate your salary to match what you're worth?? MORE WOMEN NEED TO DO THIS because the biggest reason the wage gap exists for women is being too agreeable and accept the salary employers offer without negotiating. Kudos to you, Kelly. I'm going into engineering and this is something my advisors have emphasized to me-- don't be scared to negotiate and ask for more (but also be able to defend WHY you should be paid more). And I hope this is inspiration for women in particular to be more pushy to get paid what they're deserved. I completely disagree that every person needs to be paid the same amount for the same position because two people with the same job description can vary drastically in their skills and capabilities and the person who worked their ass off to be a strong contribution deserves the same in return. I loved this video, thank you for sharing! I recently subscribed (since like.... yesterday) and I love your videos.

i'm usually the one to agree 100%. there are a lot of factors to the story. it is true that non college degree workers can get paid more than a worker with a college degree. the person with the college degree is in debt making less wages compared to someone who didn't go to college. in the US, the education system is broken. more and more millenials and soon gen z graduates end up being unemployed (jobs relating to their degree) for years!!! that is unstable. in high school adults (teachers, counselors, advisers, etc) condition students the importance of college. they are going to follow what adults say about their future. half get their degree and become unemployed and half drop out because they realize it is not their life path. the unemployment is due to the US economy. there's a lot of competition for college level jobs. it becomes more difficult attaining a job. ALSO now, most jobs are temporary. you HAVE to jump around. there is no stable 9-5 job anymore for younger generations. it's a lot. it's a lot. yes, the girl in the story was subconsciously bothered that a black girl earned more than her. and also was bothered that the system (education system) she was conditioned to believe is false and broken.

I wanted to give an update: I have been working really hard on this, and I’m seeing results! After just setting down clear boundaries with my family, i already have more self respect (i even smile more in the mirror because i like the person inside more, i’m closer to who i wanna be). Right now i’m trying to set boundaries with my friends, and I’ve promised myself to be more honest and tell them when their behavior isn’t acceptable. I don’t know why doing it to friends is harder than family, but it is! Confrontation hasn’t been invited unless absolutely necessary, i refuse to continue enabling that “culture “. For each baby step it gets easier to separate myself from the situation, as nothing is ever personal. No one’s issues or anger is about me, but when it impacts me i have the responsibility to either walk away or speak up, which is the opposite of what i was taught to do as a kid. I feel really empowered, best of luck to those trying the same.

Here in Chicago people like to claim they're from places they're not from...ex. They may be from the suburbs, and they say they're from the city....their excuse is that nobody is familiar with the suburbs so they say they're from the city...that is not how this works. I am from a lesser know city of CA. And I say that I am from that city, and not L.A....I just say, "Oh, it is about 40 mins from L.A." Because I know most people only know L.A. so that gives them an idea at least. But, I never say that I am from L.A...Many native Chicagoans find these people from the suburbs annoying for claiming to be native Chicagoans.

She shouldn’t have reacted that way though, just renegotiate your salary or leave if you’re not happy, duh

I started strongly disliking this person I've never met when you mentioned her butting into the conversation about being fetishized and missing the point completely. It's a huuuuge pet peeve of mine when someone doesn't relate to me so they start projecting other shit over whatever I'm trying to talk about, especially when it's just shallow, surface level stuff that couldn't even qualify as middle-school discussion. Not that I'm a huge deep intellectual or anything (I thought I caused the blackout in my school by throwing a stick at the green metal box once. I'm not very bright) but why can't these kinds of people ever pay attention and try to notice things outside their own little world instead of talking about the same shit every time??
