I always prefer when the scoring is done at the end and we don't know who is going to win. It makes it so much more exciting, and sometimes while you might think one person might have one, sometimes you are surprised by the winner.

Wow. So it really is a legacy game. Eric Martin, from BGG, has a 40 minute video (the first video for My City I believe) in which he says, about a zillion times, "nothing you do matters. It doesn't matter even if you knew what's coming." (paraphrasing). He even said Knizia shouldn't do legacy games. Without playing it myself, and with all your in-depth game design knowledge I will have to rank your opinion of it higher. It's a pity that Eric's video probably did a lot of "damage" to the reception of the game. It put me off. From what you said about the eternal game, they should have learned from Shadi Torbey (Onirim, and Aerion).

yeah, i hadn't watched eric's video originally because he very quickly started with the spoilers because in his estimation "nothing matters", but i watched it now, and yeah, it was an interesting take on things. if you care about winning the whole thing, choices you make definitely matter. they even at different points in the rules stop to tell you "please remember, at the end of the game, this and this and this other thing will be important, so that's something to bear in mind throughout (definitely learned from the mistake that pandemic legacy 1 made, which was that at the end, there is a final score tallied, but at no point do they ever warn you of that, creating an anti-climax). even eric admitted this in describing the discrepancy between him and his opponent throughout the game. oniverse modules are a perfect metaphor for what the game should be after the whole thing is over, btw! great call! :)

@@rahdo I will reconsider the game now, and definitely recommend it to my friend that is only starting out with board games as he enjoys Limes. I'll also pass on the advice to pay special attention to the "please remember, at the end of the game" rules.

I agree, for being a Knizia fan Eric really put down the game (while still praising Knizia’s other games in the same review)it was weird. Honestly I tend to ignore Eric Martin’s posts for reviews and thoughts on game design he’s not very structured and tends to rant on and on, I checked out his my City review because it was One of the first ones out (Might’ve even been THE first one) and after the first 6 minutes of that video him talking about Knizia and every other game except for my City, Then spoiling everythingn the game, and telling you nothing matters and that Knizia should not do Legacy games, He then proceeded to actually review the game (weird way to do a review), he really did a disservice to the game. It’s not a perfect legacy game, but what game is? I think it does a lot of things right and it’s definitely a great family weight legacy game. I hope people give this game a chance.

Thanks Richard! My partner, 9 year old and I are playing through the campaign and really enjoying it. We also took your advice on not keeping track of the score on the main board. We've been keeping track on the score for each episode on the back of the envelopes, so we are unsure who's winning with 2 games left to play.

I played through the campaign with my wife, and it was an alright time. I don't think it's a fun enough experience to keep the box to play the eternal game though. The legacy elements are essential in order for the game to stay interesting. It's the same puzzle, but this time I put an extra rock over here. Next game there's a new shape that I have to place. It's kind of like playing one of those bejeweled/candy crush apps. Each level adds a new little thing to change it up slightly. Imagine playing level 5 or so over and over again forever. No thanks.

Hey Rahdo. Playing through My City at the moment with my wife and we're up to the third envelope. Absolutely loving it bud. Just wondering if you'll come up with some house rules for the Eternal game to implement the stuff/components that come from opening up the later envelopes. Kinda don't want to give it away for people but looks like a whole heap of fun and don't understand how Reiner and team missed the boat by not adding the extra components to the eternal mode.. seems wasteful.

I had to google it after your comment. I´m German (as is Knizia and Kosmos) and I have a major in history. Never heard of it before. Well, there is just so much you can know and read. But I agree, this Game does not need a tagline. I wonder whether any boardgame does. The english wikipedia page on "manifest destiny" has 111 citations and 31 literature sources. The german wikipedia page has 3 citations and and 8 literature souces.

It doesn't look very attractive. When you compare the beautiful, vibrant artwork on the box cover to what is actually on the table infront of Rahdo, it's a little disappointing. Would be nice if there were a deluxe edition which had 3d models like on the box cover. That would be so much more appealing. I obviously haven't played the game and understand that the legacy additions of stickers etc probably make this impossible. Thanks for the review. Hope you are well.

He doesn't review the games he doesn't like. The closest he comes is in reviewing games that 'are not for them'. If he actively dislikes it to the extent that he cannot say something positive, my understanding is that he then wont produce a video. I.e. Ominous silence is as close as Rahdo gets to a negative review. And even then, I'm sure there are some games he likes, or thinks he would like, but hasn't reviewed.
