I am so stoked for this game. I have been looking for a roll and write with crunch. I hope this delivers. Thanks for the thoughts, Rahdo. I’m with you on limiting how much you can do so it incentives/varies additional plays. Good to know in advance

This game looks like lots of fun. I think the instructions give a good general historical premise for the game and if causes an itch go find some scratches in books, shows or the internets, or other research the publisher doesn’t need to be a historical resource. Just my humble opinion.

doesn't need to, but considering tha they did all the research, and converted it into gameplay, why not share that behind the scenes stuff?

I feel like boardgames -can- be used to great affect as an education tool, however think that this is not it’s primary function, it’s a game first. Crusaders is Similar, in so much as the inclusion of a bit more history would’ve been nice, but to be fair, it’s a solid game and fun anyways. I shall check out Hadrian’s wall, thanks for your review.

publishers aren't obligated to, they have an opportunity to. and why wouldn't they, as it only increases the value and relevance of their product, for almost zero cost!

Totally agree, I play games as an escape. I don't seek too much reality or emphasis on overloading in my games. Different horses for courses I guess.

When I first heard of this game, I thought this would be combo heaven. My wife and I enjoy Ganz/That's Pretty Clever but we felt the meat/combos of the game came too late for us. Most of the neat little combos came in around round 3. I could be wrong though. While watching your video I had the feeling that you can do a lot in 6 rounds. The house rule of starting in year 2 sounds like something to look into. Anxiously awaiting this. No shipment notification yet.

I think the rulebook actually really missed the mark when talking about slavery and how it is depicted. “We must not dishonour the lives of those who were forced into that history by erasing them.” But then proceeds to call them servants for the rest of the game. These people were not servants they were slaves, and by calling them servants the publisher is in fact erasing them. If your design is unable to handle a difficult historical topic, then pick a different setting.

Being only half American and having grown up in Germany, I'm not sure what exactly you mean by straining, but IMHO I think as long as there are injustice and discrimination and all the other bad things of any kind going on the world, there cannot be enough people in the world speaking up to it. So I tip my hat to you Rahdo for taking the extra time whenever you see an opportunity. It's probably the least we can do, to take opportunities to at least stand in for every humans rights whenever we see one. No offense meant just my humble opinion.

I understand what the commenter means: on a 10 min review video, 5 minutes are dedicated to race and societal considerations in ancient Rome. This could be considered a bit excessive when Rahdo himself admits the game did it mostly right. Still, it is his perrogative.

I don't know if this is a problem with the game per se, but as a Jew the theme is quite triggering. Hadrian was known for his wall, but in our history he is most known for his murderous persecution of Jews in Judea and throughout the Empire. Many of those purple slaves were Jews who were taken from their families and homes, to work, assimilate, or die up north. I understand that every historical event or figure will have positives and negatives associated with it, and I don't think this should stand in the way of publishing this game or people enjoying it, but I personally won't be able to play this game.
