I've had a Comma 2 for two years and I always say to those people out there who are worried about self-driving vehicles, I can assure you that my vehicle, that is basically being driven by an old cellphone, drives better than 80+% of the people on the road today; it can see the lane lines and other vehicles in all lighting and weather conditions and is always paying constant attention to the road and the other vehicles around it, while staying in its lane at a safe following distance without tailgating or poorly regulating its speed.

You definitely need to do an update on this after a few weeks of living with it to see how it met your expectations as a commuter. Also the whiz-bang Volt specific updates.

Great job JR! Also, Jake looks great and healthier too. I think is he beginning to move on .

Jake was kinda in a funk because of what happened. On top of that, Jake then got Covid! This just shows me that you do not watch many of Jake’s videos. Do you think that I just invented something like that to mess with Jake? Who would do that ?Didn’t you see that 23 people gave my comment a thumbs up ?Obviously they were aware of the situation.

It is great to see Jake " guest starring" in your vlog. Nice car.

Have you also tried this system during the day? I believe it does a better job when things are well-lit and it doesn't have to drive in the dark.

It does just as well in the dark in my opinion, and honestly I feel like it sees more than I do. Maybe if you have super dim headlights it would be a problem.. 😜

Great video, always nice to see openpilot get some exposure. Soon openpilot will be able to slow for curves on its own and even stop at stop signs/red lights. I've used it for nearly two years and even the older versions of openpilot have been amazing. It really takes the fatigue out of driving, you can literally go for hours on the interstate without touching anything.

So incredibly cool! Great video JR, this is the way of the future and even though I'm an old gear head I do believe that self driving will add to the safety to the road systems. As technology improves over time these systems will get even better and the reality is the "intelligence" will be able to make safer diving decisions faster and more accurately than humans do. I do hope that these systems will be available on gas and other fuel based vehicles, with retrofit hardware for steering control. This is would make the ultimate mod for vehicle enthusiasts looking to resto-mod their older vehicles.

I have a '23 Bolt EUV on order with Super Cruise. I wasn't jealous until it changed lanes virtually by itself. The EUV requires complete "human intervention" to change lanes, and then SC takes back over. That said, I love the Volt and the Open Pilot addition. Very nice!

@@chynacash3138 , the Super Cruise in the EUV is a basic program. I doubt they'll upgrade it to the "full" program that Cadillac's have, even though we'll eventually pay the same amount for the program. Perhaps if we squawk loud enough to GM, they'll upgrade us to the full program. I'm also hopeful that the additional 200,000 miles of new SC roads will be added to the EUV's SC program.

And I will DEFINITELY be "whining " if you trust it to do whatever and it fails resulting in a serious accident. Do you realize that John can't use this system EVER AGAIN after posting this video and pointing out the HUGE flaws? If he gets in an accident in this car and the video is shown in court, he will lose everything.

@@chevycamero2862 These systems need about 10 more years of development before being released. Can you imagine all the 16 to 20 year olds treating their cars as though they were washing machines? The real world is unpredictable. Kids run into streets chasing balls, bicycle riders do whatever they want and expect preferential treatment. Rocks and trees fall unexpectedly from cliffs, car wheels come off other cars, mattresses fly off pickups.....self driving cars are a scary thing to me. Computers cannot be trusted to drive a 2 ton vehicle. Really, REALLY bad idea.

Although I personally am not a fan of these autopilot options as it takes the responsibility away from you and I just don't trust tech enough to put my life or other peoples lives in it's hands. Just seems wrong to me, if you don't want to drive, then just catch an uber or the bus ya know. But each to their own I guess, still a cool video

That is a very impressive system, not cheap but certainly impressive 👍. I have done a timing belt on a PT Cruiser and I understand why Jake wants to take a break from doing it, it a very nasty job.

I think most PT Cruisers probably ended up in junkyards simply over the timing belt breaking lol I don't think they are interference engines so they probably would still run with a new belt but I heard the labor to do the job is hell.

This is pretty freaking cool, I cant wait for new battery innovations.

Totally. Better battery innovations will spill over into everything -- electric planes and trains, storage for excess hydroelectric and solar power, laptops, cell phones, biotechnology, semi trucks, and much more. Hopefully our current battery technology will look amusingly primitive to future generations.

I want to chime in and say that there are times when I don't want no damned AI driving my car, and there are times when I can barely tolerate the thought of driving. I think a lot of people are going to feel that way. So it's not not one or the other, it's more like there's the right time for each. Where I live, there are a lot of bridges with extremely bad traffic, so it's was an unexpected surprise to discover how well the AI will safely crawl through 45 minutes of sickening stop-and-go driving. Same thing for long commutes on an Interstate. But no matter how good this technology gets, I'm happy knowing there will always be sports cars and empty, curvy roads.

If that "small object " that John had to MANUALLY avoid was a medium sized rock 🪨 in the road, anyone paying attention to their phone instead of DRIVING would be in a world of hurt. If you don't want to drive, call an user or a taxi. If you run into me while I'm riding my motorcycle and you said that it wasn't YOUR fault, your computer failed to self drive, I'd be owning everything you have worked for. Is it worth the risk? Please say " NO". I don't want to share the road with you.

Pretty much this. I need to drive for work to client sites sometimes and it can be 3-4 hours each way on occasion. Something like this would let me semi-zone out and not worry about it too awful much and I can just enjoy my audiobook or podcast without having to constantly be aware. The flip side of that is that I live in the Northeast and our roads are awful, so I am ever vigilant in terms of potholes, torn up roads for construction, bad repair jobs, etc so as not to ruin my car. But yeah, I love driving my car when I can actually drive my car, but boring ass highway drives and stop and go traffic? GTFO. I sat in 40 minutes of traffic just on the George Washington Bridge onramp in the Bronx last week. Would have been nice to not have to pay constant attention in that.

I bought my 2016 Volt Premier with the same intention, but the weak steering motor made me uncertain that I should get that. Thanks for showing that installation and operating video (it may be the key to my wife approving the funds) and I look forward to more Gen 2 Volt content! (hint - have you considered changing the sound it makes while driving?)

JR: I think we could do it right in 20 minutes. Jake: we could do it wrong in 10! 🤣🤣🤣

My favorite memory as a kid was when I was able to ride in a self-driving Army Humvee built by CMU down a highway in Pittsburgh. I kept thinking to myself, “This is cool af. Wonder when it’ll get to the public.”

My 18 Subaru almost does everything that does (no auto lane changes), but it's pretty insistent on seeing steering torque to infer hands on the wheel.

I just like driving. I like the hybrid Volt though, I almost bought one. Used car salespersons are a-holes. They told me to come in for a test drive and when I got there, the car was sitting outside, I was like, great! There it is, waiting for me to test drive it. I went in, looked for the sales person, told someone I was there to test drive the Volt. They pretended to search around, then someone finally came over and told me it was being sold right at that moment. Then they had the nerve to ask if I wanted to look at other non-hybrid cars. Actually followed me out to my car pleading with me to just go look at one so her boss would not get mad at her for losing a sale. I drove off. But Yeah, I still want a Volt.

This would be a total stress inducer for this old man.......lol........ I'd be on pins and needles watching the car drive. !!!

It still can't navigate, go through intersections, or really provide any crash avoidance. It's cool, but it's really only useful on long car trips, and then just barely. I'll wait.

It's a good system. I use it everyday for my commute to work. I always keep my hand loosely wrapped around the steering wheel in case I need to take control.

I just put Pirelli P7 Cinturato all season plus 2 tires on my car and if you like smooth and quiet tires these are the ticket. I was cruising at 80 mph on I-240 and the only sound I heard was the wind rushing over the body of the car. My car isn't known for being a silent car either.

Quick Question: I was taught, as many others I know have, to look further into a 'curve' than at the start of the 'arc'. IDK how it works but it prevents you from overcorrecting while you are in the turn, allowing you to hold your lane position comfortably and smoothly. My question: Does the software for this self-driving/steering system do the same? Or do you have to program it for that?

From experience I can tell you it keeps you dead center of the lane even in a curve. It depends on the car though, comma has a huge list of supported cars separated into tiers. Cars in a lower tier have less steering torque and thus you will have to take over for sharper curves.

not possible to install ACC, you can do lane centering with standard cruise on OP though.

Great video. However, there are too many scenarios that it can't handle. That would make me more stressed than if I drove manually. It's like turning the wheel over to my teenage daughter.

I have a Ram 2500 with lane keep and adaptive cruise. I reached out to comma about compatibility since they only list the 1500. So looked around more and looks like it should work with my 2500.

How well does your Rams lane keep assist work? I have a ‘21 Pacifica and the lane keep assist is aggressive, it swerves or over corrects to the point that you look like you’re drunk instead of a gentle correction back to centered.

@@daveh2612 it bounces off the line and pretty much swerves you into oncoming traffic. It scared me when I first got it because I came from a car that had good lane keep and drove the ram for a little while without realizing it was turned off on the dash. Turned it on expecting at least halfway decent assist and it tried to kill me. It's fine if you're actively driving but it's absolutely not a hands off experience

Comma just released OpenPilot version 0.9.0 which has an Experimental Mode with end-to-end longitudinal planning that includes stopping for traffic signals and stop signs.

Would it be possible to upgrade the steering motor so it could do better turning, or would that start breaking things? Would it be impossible / doesn't exist? I drive a 2010 Mazda 3 2.5 hatchback and it's a great car. The thing I want most though if I were to get something new would be features like this, or even just simply adaptive cruise. I use cruise on the highway all the time as to not have to nanny the throttle and get so annoyed when someone is going just slightly under the speed limit and I have to readjust. At my last job 2 of my coworkers has Volts and recommended them, great cars.

Super cruise also only works on roads that have been LiDAR mapped by GM for super cruise. If you look at the super cruise coverage map, it’s essentially only interstate highways. I would much rather have open pilot than super cruise.

Do you have a link to this extra parts that you had to add?

Now that you mention it, the odd thing is the idea of autopilot is to automate the mundane parts of driving that you could get distracted while doing, but at the same time you have to monitor it the entire time to ensure it doesn't make an error in an unexpected moment.

20:09 What did you think the switch was for? Yes, you are turning off the ASCM in the back of the car. And that is the Advanced Safety Control Module, that normally talks to the camera and does emergency braking. It would interfere with Openpilot so badly though.

Are there links to find all additional wire harnesses and switches needed?

I don’t have any experience with autopilot. Is it restful to be driven in the highway even if you still have to closely supervise?

BNSF trains exceed 14,000 or even 15,000 feet, BNSF's average train length in 2021 was 6,900 feet, up just 200 feet from a year ago. Most of the trains that run past your shop are usually around 1.3 miles long..

I sold my 2019 Volt for a Corolla Hybrid so I could get openpilot. I miss my Volt but no regrets, love openpilot even more

@@legomasterj good call. I thought of getting a 2018 but I got my 2019 brand new and wanted another brand new car, great feeling so I got a hybrid corolla. But I miss my Volt, loved the 50+ miles of electricity. Best of both worlds

Even when I was working late and dog tired, I always wanted to drive home. I'm glad you're happy with the self-driving system. Personally, I have greater comfort knowing that there's no way my car can be driven from space.

I drove a 17 Volt LT for 4 years before selling it to buy a 17 Volt Premier with Adaptive Cruise Control and far fewer miles. I looked around quite a bit to get all of the options so I could eventually add this. Then a year later, I still hadn't bought it but decided to buy a 2020 Tesla Model 3 Performance with Full Self Driving. I kept the Volt to rent out on Turo. I might give it to one of my kids. I'm curious if this is good enough to make driving safer for them or if it's likely that they will over rely on it so much that it ends up making the car more dangerous. Also I'm curious if version 2 is good and reliable enough that I shouldn't have to spend a lot more for version 3.

Definitely need Jake to be in more videos.

Hey neighbor! You should drive my Model 3 to compare the quirks and capabilities of the autopilots between our cars. I only have basic AP (not FSD) but it sure is nice on long trips. With autopilot on, it will stop behind stopped cars, but my pupils get so dilated as the car closes in, it's just too much for my frail nervous system. LOL!

I can't wait to get this for my 17 volt premier. Do you have a list or better yet a link to the needed cables?? Help please!

You're right in saying that "robots should be driving". I'm waiting for that day. Right now I think of the available system like they are a '2-year old child'...they can operate on their own but NOT without serious adult supervision. I love 'cool'...but I don't want to baby-sit a 2-year old. Am I correct in remembering that OpenPilot doesn't recognize 'Stop signs'. I'm also a little uncomfortable with how many times the 'driver' needs to take over to avoid a catastrophe. I'm also beginning to think that self-driving is an all or nothing process. Systems that do 90% of the tasks (but the other 10% will kill you) are a recipe for disaster. Humans tend to be lazy or stupid when it comes to these systems...they will fall asleep, play videos or simply space-out...just when the system is expecting drivers to be there to provide backup. We all know that things are only as good as the 'weakest link' and, in this, we are the weakest link. Tesla's system can do more than OpenPilot and they haven't released it into the wild...what doe that tell us? Beyond adaptive cruise control, I think I'll wait until cars no longer have steering wheels as the sign that the car can self-drive.

As much as I like driving, I'd definitely take public transport if it worked with my business. This is too far away for me to trust it, but still a cool video. I didn't know this tech was even available for Volts, but it makes sense.

If all cars had adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking I think that would be good enough for the vast majority of people. Those two things by themselves would cut rear end collisions in half, at least, saving untold millions in insurance costs and thousands of lives to boot. _Most_ people won't need full self driving capability.

The problem is if you’re not driving then you’re not paying as much attention as you should be and as you pointed out the system can’t handle things like swerving around the dead animal on the road… what happens when that’s a kid on a bike instead of a dead animal? I’ve avoided hundreds of accidents by doing quick swerves that that system could never do. I think especially among car guys you have to be in a minority to not enjoy driving, I absolutely hate being in a car that I’m not driving.

Even among hard-core car guys, there are kinds of driving that just suck the life out of you. I am one myself, but i recently did an almost 200 mile drive in a Tesla on autopilot, and I have to say, I arrived WAY more relaxed and way less tired than when driving the same route myself. I monitored the road carefully, but did not have to brake or accelerate as the traffic in front of me changed, and I didn't have to keep the car centered in my lane. It's an unusual experience if you haven't done it before, and it's kind of life-changing in a way.

@@richarda3659 Have you ever ridden a motorcycle? Because if you have you know there is a difference in the level of attention you pay to things on a motorcycle vs. driving a car. This is simply because cars are safer, not as many hazards will affect you in a car so you don’t look for them as hard… It’s the same difference to a self driving car, you’re going to subconsciously lower your alertness to potential hazards because the car is doing the driving. Heck even when they put seatbelts in cars for the first time accident rates went up because drivers felt safer in their car so again they didn’t pay as much attention. Unfortunately as much as humans want to sit here and say that they will still watch the road and pay just as much attention, that’s just not possible, that is not how humans work, we will become complacent and reliant on this technology and then we will no longer have the skills and abilities as drivers to actually avoid those difficult situations that the auto pilot won’t be able to.

But if you try with a map going on a regular street route, works?

I kept waiting for it to burst into flames.

I think you can on many newer cars with current-gen ADAS systems, but probably not when retrofitting a Volt.

I love the Comma 2 and loved (past tense, recently sold) my Volt. While OpenPilot is usually better than Autopilot, I can't make that claim for the Volt due to the torque limits not being able to handle high curves.

Can it be installed on my korean version cadillac ct5?

This is much better than any Tesla as it has a gas generator as well as short range battery. Arguably better built too, although the plaid models are much better than their earlier counterparts. All my cars have an autopilot on my familiar commutes, if I'm listening to an audiobook; I somehow zone out and don't remember any of the towns and roads I've passed that day. I don't crash, so the cars must be driving themselves.

Can someone help me out. I swear I watched this video and went to the link in the description and seen the Volt in the list of compatible cars, but now when I go there I do not see the Volt listed anymore. Did something change?

I just wish I had purchased adaptive cruise on my car. I didn't realize how nice it is until I had a rental with it. Oh well, by the time I buy a new car they will probably all be fully self driving!
