It does come with a custom high-end putter cover made for the PLD customs. The PLD program is top-notch - they treated me very well, and I was one of the early customers and paid nowhere near $2k. I've had putters from a few custom putter makers, and the PLD is the best one I've had and is still in the bag.

Visually, the packaging is much nicer. BUT, to set some reality back in, Ping just spent about $25 more on the cardboard, instead of a generic white cardboard. So, not really that much different. Ping, like all companies, is trying to SELL a premium experience for what they believe is a premium product AND MAKE MONEY. Nothing wrong with that, and we need to set our expectations accordingly.

I have mixed feelings - on the one hand, a simple presentation would tell me that the whole cost of the experience was devoted to getting me the best putter they could provide, and on the other hand, for that cost, the shipping box should enclose a hardshell case with a proper formed velvet lining, like a musical instrument case.

Maybe Rick should explain the fitting process a little more clearly so everyone has clear understanding of what is offered. It is not just a means of taking your stats and then fitting a putter for you ie. length, lie, face balance etc. Ping will take your stats and then guide you in to the putter that suits your technique. Some of those putters certainly will not be available at retail. Then you have choices of different metals, carbon or stainless steel. Then you’re choosing your milling based on what you prefer in feel. Then you have different hosel configurations, centre shafted, double bend, plumbers neck, and more. Not available at retail. Then you have different finishes which are varied( check out Viktor Hovlands putter, carbon and patina finish. It rusts.) And it is not available at retail. Then you have different weights. Adding tungsten weight. Different brand stamping, plus your own customised stamping as well. Assortment of grips and so on. Even for his original putter. If he chose raw carbon with black finish, that putter will rust. If he chose stainless steel with black finish, it will not. He probably chose the metal based on feel. He would/should have been advised that it will rust. All of these are choices that a tour player can make and now us average Joes have the opportunity to do so as well. Costs a bomb, yes, but what is more ridiculous is those who pay through the roof and more for Cameron Circle T putters that are not even built for them. I think Ricks explanation of the experience is quite poor and not reflective of the whole process. That could be improved as well, as this is beyond a regular fitting for a custom club with some personal stamps added on.

Great to see they’ve listened. Still think that creating an “unboxing” experience is such a waste time, resources and generally not a sustainable approach. I can understand that the fool who ends up paying $2000 for the experience would want it, but imho it should come in the form of something long lasting. Like a unique headcover, special shaft, some further personalisation or something. At least it should stay with the user, because let’s be honest. That box will find its way to the bin within a week. KZread reviews should not focus on the unboxing experience at all, because it’s literally the least importing thing of the whole product.

Rick, I would challenge you to get a custom putter w/ tour pro fitting from any other BIG name golf club manufacturer, built to your exact specifications with just about any custom touch you want including custom stamping, and see what it would cost compared to what Ping currently charges. My guess is, you won’t find it. In my search, a SC putter was the closest I could find, and their custom shop only had very, in my opinion, basic custom offering and they didn’t not offer a tour level fitting. It was not an apples to apples comparison and it wasn’t much cheaper either. Ping on the other hand, basically allowed me to customize my putter to exactly what I wanted, didn’t say no to custom touches and built me a putter in line with what I believe SC only offers from their very super VIP boutique studio line that probably cost north of $3k USD. And that is if you even get “lucky” enough to purchase one. I would love to know if there is something out there I may have missed but from what I gather, what Ping offers and the price associated with that offering, is a really great value and currently cannot be beat.

I bought the Ping PLD gold-plated Anser 2 (limited run) and it was still much less than 2000 pounds...but I can't game that, it's collector's only. Same disappointing white box. But a real gold-plated Ping putter is jaw dropping in-person.

Appreciate PING standing behind their products. They've replaced my Heppler Tyne 3 twice already for bubbling on the face. Good company.

Nice they listened. Ya if I went for a $2,500 putter fitting when I get it an open the box... I want to be in awe. Much better this time. But I'm still not spending that much money on a putter. Unless it's a rare Scotty which should increase in value.

Thank you for sharing and it's great to hear that Ping has improved. But don't you think they only moved because someone with your reach exposed them in a video? And the new boxing from the inside isn't that great either.... Stick with my custom-made clubs from one of the best club designer and manufacturer in the world - Tom Wishon.

Wow, your "Brutally Honest Review" sure had an impact. Made Ping go to a bit nicer box and a glossy cheap looking headcover. Why, they even rust-proofed the clubhead! I sure am glad we have folks like you to tell it like it is, to get them clubmakers straightened out.

Every nickel (or pence I presume) that I spend on golf equipment is measured against the product, not the box or presentation in the delivery process. If all that stuff cost $50 added to the price I'd prefer $50 off the purchase price. I do appreciate the comments on the rust - that should have been handled. In general I believe that the cost on 'exceptional' examples (golf clubs, cars or aircraft) is measured by the buyer and that determines the success of that product.

Should be a hard case like a Pelican or something as sturdy but with a cool design. Nice they used the magnetic latch but then the inside was honestly kind of meh. Much improved though.

That head cover is made from the gimpy gator in the pond (used to be in the pond) at the Cocoa Beach Country Club. For 2K you should get a guy reading your putts for you for at least a month of play. I'm a musician, I used to always say If I only had x guitar or x synthesizer I could make great songs! It's not the gear it's the opperator.

Ild still expect more, maybe a hat or a bag towel or something, they must know that £2,000 makes it 5 times the price of most other putters, there definitely should be a wow factor for it, ball markers, tees etc a decent welcome and thank you letter, just shows how little they actually care and think of their customers tbh.
