My (boring) Ending of Using Arc for a Month

In this video I wanted to wrap up some last-minute thoughts about my experience with the Arc A770, including some opinions on their products, and my recommendation for the card / series as a whole. I do think if you are more of a PC enthusiast and were curious about the card, now is a better time than it was at launch to pick one of these up, however intel still has a long way to go with driver and software refinement and feature parity, so unless you are aware of the shortcomings, I do think that it would be best to go with a competitor like AMD unless you require the feature sets of CUDA, then you likely already have what you need.
Phew, now that that is done I can try to get back to other projects.

I will say, a KZread channel literally called “A770” put out a video of editing some script for Arc Control for Fan Control. I made the same edit, saved, and rebooted my PC and now have fan control for my A770. Been a handy little workaround.

So, in a nutshell, it's pretty usable and it depends of you if it has a good value proposition. Which is good news, because that means it doesn't have any deal breakers. The initial drivers, if they were the final ones, would've been a deal break for most people.

Exactly. The initial release drivers were straight garbage. However now, even if it still isn’t perfect, I’d say it’s at least usable enough. I still plan to use my Arc cards in some of my other rigs (because I might as well, I already bought them), and then perhaps as time goes on I’ll see if drivers or Arc Control continue to improve.

@@jwoolery99 Haven't got to watch you other 2 videos. Have you dabbled into Linux ? Usually on Linux Intel has good drivers and nice contributions in general. I'm thinking it might be better there, especially compared to AMD and NVidia on Linux. Sadly, YT is really lacking on videos on that topic.

@@jwoolery99 Oh, forgot to do the answer part :)) Yeah, I hope, and it seems that the drivers will improve. The unification part would also be nice, and if both the integrated graphics and ARC cards use Xe, I'd see that as a win for them too, have only one software suite, not multiple. I really hope that the rumors of ARC being kind of cancelled and really on the backside for a long while are not true.

note: a refresh of ARC is already planned they are just waiting for the drivers to be ready so they can charge higher then cost on the cards, and the drivers are maturing pretty quickly overall, once the dxvk-async based dx11 update drops i expect alot of peoples complaints to become null and void... i already use dxvk and its amazing for speed/perf on these cards in most titles.. i love this card... at the price i could have gotten a 3060 or 6600xt at the time i ordered....

im quite fond of the Acer Predator Bifrost A770 16gb, for SOME games a 3060ti can be faster, with current drivers, and these have alot of perf to give, hardware wise they are closer to a 3070ti-3080, drivers are still very much a work in progress, but, im loving this card, dxvk-async fixes most of the issues, and the UAC prompt was partially MS's end, according to MS employees i know. some games LOVE this thing, others, clearly need driver work or optimization for arc... for older games not using crap anti-cheats, dxvk-async will solve most problems at worst you have to make a config file and add a few lines...like masking the gpu as nvidia to trick TWIMTBP titles into not sending broken code to non nvidia cards for example.. ;)

Thanks for the extensive feedback as well as checking in on comments-- I've seen some leaks showing Arc's outdoing competition in at least a couple benches, a working oc tool has just been released and that AV1-encoder sounds like a delight.. any chance of showcasing a couple of its strengths in a future upload, or are you moving on from it?

There’s a possibility I could, but I want to move on to other projects for the time being. And I feel like other channels may provide a better content piece on the subject. If there’s enough demand for it, I’m more than happy to set something like that up and do more testing, but I don’t wanna run the audience dry on Arc continually over and over again if you know what I mean 😅

It seems the reviews of the Arc differ from game to game and as you pointed out you need the right hardware with rebar. It also seems to work better on Intel CPU architecture. 6700xt is fair bit more expensive. The weird thing is when you get to 1440p the gap seems to narrow and 4k even more depending of the game. So it is not really that strait forward to judge Arc when every new driver seems to get the card closer to the competition. And sometimes surprise surprise even beating the more expensive card. 4k in most games now seems to be very playable 50-60FPS and some 40FPS but with adjustments still works well. There was only few new titles that seemed to lack on drivers. To be honest the improvements have come fast considering Intel is starting from nothing. So if they keep this up this will be very affordable and good card. The roadmap of Intel puts next GPU for end of the year and 3rd 2024. So I have big hopes Intel gets the driver issues sorted before the end of the year.

I would like to point out that you should not compare the A770 with a 6800 xt because that is a rtx 3080 competitor at both price and performance. You should rather compare to a rtx 3060 since the rtx 3060 and A770 have the same msrp at around 330 usd

@The Linux Cave yes it is more powerful than a rtx 3060 in most games. But you are supposed to look at the price to preformance when comparing pc parts. Otherwise I could just say "Oh look the A770 is so much worse than a rtx 3090" but the problem is that they are not even close to being in the same price class

Yeah I’m aware it’s not a fair comparison, however that’s the card that I had in my daily driver PC so it was only fair to briefly show the differences. And I don’t have a 3060, the closest I have is a 3060 Ti or 6600 XT, so if I wanted to make a proper comparison video I would use those instead, but that wasn’t the point for this video.

Its more like a 3060Ti in performance and die size. But it can ray trace in some titles like Metro Exodus at close to a 3070, that's to close for Nvidias liking. That is pretty good for $349 or in my case $320 with a mail in rebate around Christmas where I shop. That is better ray tracing on first gen then AMD could deliver, lol!

comparing a $300 vs $600 card is odd. But I would think A770 is reasonably cost. Currently at half price, they are also 1/2 the FPS. At a times where AMD and Nvidia going ham after everyone wallet. Having a alternative is always good.

  • @jwoolery99

It wasn’t exactly fair since the 6800 XT is what I have, so compared to what the A770 is doesn’t make sense. That’s why I went back to my AMD card, not that the intel one stopped me from playing games, but it was a different price class. It’s still a very usable card, especially now compared to when it first came out, and that’s more important anyway.

the biggest flaw is the drives at the moment, and they keep getting better, some titles, this card is so close to a 3080 that, my buddy sold his 3080 over xmas to his bro for 2.5x what the predator bifrost cost, and ordered a 2nd a770 to toss in his wifes system, after she tested her 3 main games on his rig one needed dxvk-async the other 2 worked better then her 6750xt chungus edition, and the video editors she uses for work, have gotten arc updates, and from her raving, this destroys the amd cards for editing and encoding to every format the 2 support, and av1 is faster in quality mode vs amd at avc or hevc at Best Speed/fastest.... so... yeah... she tossed in an extra 1660ti they had in a box and uses it for moonlight desktop and media streaming, till the ver thats not nvenc bound gets more mature.. anyway, he put her card in his rig as a 2nd card to test and... only used the 6750xt for a few titles that are very amd centric.. till he learned he could mask the card as amd and also use launch augments to nearly double the perf using the a770... using dxvk... somebody sent him the config file to use with dxvk-async, and damn son... he streamed to us during this testing and... it was impressive how much just tossing dxvk-async and the config file in boosted perf in that game... also fixed some issues common on non-amd hardaware... these cards, have alot to give, the fact they got smart and started to use 3rd party translation layers to sort alot of this by baking them into drivers... shows they listened to the community when we said after teh a380 showed up on newegg, that... baking dxvk into the drivers, could make massive improvements to legacy api support... i wont be shocked to see amd and nvidia follow them in a few years honestly.. easier to debug dxvk then keep updating old optimizations and bug fixes/work arounds for ancient titles.. just bake dxvk and such into drivers and work with the community, including the competition, to give the best experience possible, even if only bug fixes not hardware specific optimizations are contributed back.. dxvk could quickly become almost a defacto standard.. since ms wont put out a genuinely good legacy to 12 layer... despite it being something they could clearly do... if valve and community can make dxvk as good as it already is.. li been using it for years, dual 1070's loved dxvk, and yes sli kicked in on any title with an sli profile funny enough... i gather its not something supported but.. i wont complain.. :)

Why MSI AfterBurner Is Probably Dead Maybe the graphics card program does not support more or there is a problem It may be difficult for professional gamers to deal with overclockers Because I don't think there is another program like it

  • @EbonySaints

    @EbonySaints

Afterburner is dead because the programmer is Russian (Alexey Nicolaychuk, aka Unwinder) and he hasn't been paid since sanctions kicked in. He's been trying to carry on by himself, but the fact is that he can't live on nothing. In regards to Arc overclocking, Shamino released a tool for it, but it's *really* rough around the edges. Also, as far as we know, memory overclocking is unsupported. It may be enabled by Intel in the future, and it's obvious that it can be manipulated since one of the drivers gimped the A770's memory speed by a bit. However, until Intel gets Arc Control under control, the chances of that being on the table are non-existent.
