My BMW 335i Coolant Leak Saga Continues....
I have been leaking coolant from my BMW 335i for a while now. It's been a pain and I haven't been able to have nearly as much fun as I'd like driving this car. I've been finding leaks and then replacing parts for a while now, but I just haven't been able to get this leak finally fixed.
Today I'm going to walk you through the history of what this looked like, and make sure that you know if you're having the same kind of problem with your #BMW #leaking #coolant how to fix the problem or at least get to the right diagnosis.

Head gasket is a VERY very rare issue on N54. You should rent a cooling system pressure test kit and find out exactly where it's coming from.

@@ECPP Im still chasing a similar issue.....leaking constantly, pressure tests reveal nothing and nothing on the garage floor, but a constant smell of hot coolant anytime the engine has reached operating temp. Reservoir tank changed twice. (2nd time for no good reason but to put $$ in the "German Specialists" pocket). Engine runs perfectly and Ive been told the N55 is not prone to head gasket issues. I agree with the comment below regarding a pressure test. Most of the parts you have changed were most likely due to be changed anyway; but now its time for more of a diagnosis. I think there may be a florescent additive you can add to the coolant and then check for leaks with a light (when the system is under pressure). Similar to the method used on Air Con. leaks. OR, it sounds like you have a significant leak/puddle (as you mentioned). You could disassemble as much as possible for access and a direct visual and start the car up. Then simply watch closely where you suspect the leak may be.

  • @ECPP

    @ECPP

    4 жыл бұрын

Fair call, I may look into the coloured additive. As I mentioned in another response, the dealer did not really want to touch the car and when they did, their “pressure test” revealed nothing

Ok this video earned my sub, looking forward to watching the video where you find the issue with your car. I currently have a 2015 535 with random coolant leakage and high temps. It'll leak for a week then be "normal" for a couple weeks and then the leak magically returns. Replaced the expansion tank, thermostat, check the hose and refill the coolant. No leak for 3 weeks, but temp still around 240's. Then it magically starts to leak again with temps around 240ish. Never in my 40 years of spinning wrenches have I seen this situation. Of course the day I have time to remove the splash guard and put eyes on the leak it stops. It's almost like the car knows when's the worst time to act up.

Symptoms were coolant in the tray under the engine, down along were the head meets the block and splatters from the coolant that was being flicked off the fan belt.

I haven’t watched this fully but one thing I learned in time, is that if you’re going to mod your BMW, know exactly what you’re doing. Most of the leaks are from overheating, temperature, or even if you’re unlucky tbh. You need to replace the plastic hoses, and also modify where you’d place these parts that are bunched up under the plastic covering. You’re changing a lot of parts on a turbo, maybe you should switch to silicon if you haven’t and also maybe change the positioning of your hoses.

They design BMW's to be disposable at around 80k or 7 years. After that you will be replacing every part one by one. It's probably better to lease a new one for 3 years then turn it back in before the repairs start. I currently own 2 and the only way I was able to turn them somewhat reliable was to rebuild the engine, transmission, entire cooling system, all sensors and all accessories at the same time. I am able to do all the work myself and that is the only reason rebuilding them was a viable option for me. If I had to pay a mechanic to do it the cost would easily exceed the value of the vehicles.

@@ECPP Yes, if the head gasket were damaged, you would have definitely seen and felt it on your test drive. If it wasn't damaged, and you didn't take the car on drag races... hell, even if you did drag race, on a stock motor, it is 99% impossible to damage the head gasket on an N54. Now if you have upgraded turbos running high boost in the 20's...AND you raced daily for long periods of time...then, yeah, your head gasket COULD be leaking.

JamesJ30t I like bmw vehicles, but I will not refrain from telling the truth that they are money pits, a 10 year old bmw is not the best vehicle to take on a long term road trip, simply because they are mechanically unpredictable, anything could fail during commute, and that alone puts these vehicles in the most depreciative category, they are expensive junk🤷‍♂️over excessive maintenance, only to find more things failing.

Lexus is so far behind in performance, efficiency, handling and driving dynamics compared to German brands there is no comparison. When something does break on your Lexus, the repair will be just as expensive due to dealer mark up on parts and labour so what's the point in owning one? Your better off sticking to Toyota, Honda or Mazda. Plus a 12 year old BMW still looks good today as the one in this video, it has a timeless design. Take a look at any Lexus from the same year and it will look like crap

BMW is definitely more exciting. I had a BMW 2 years ago. Wallet kept falling out of my pocket. My priority was family, not fixing a vehicle every couple of months. Picked up a Lexus IS and I have no problems.

Dude just take the car to a professional shop so they can do a pressure test and find were the exact leak is coming from. Just throwing the wrong parts at the car is wasting you tons of money.

I am glad you said that because I will not expose but I did and their pressure test revealed nothing on the first visit but I came back after a month when I had to add another jug of coolant and told them that obviously there was a leak. The second visit they still could not find but literally mentioned they believed it to be the hose that I changed last video. Feels like the dealer did not want much to do with it.

@@ECPP it's best to go to an independent bmw mechanic. The dealership dosen't want to help you if your not going to let them do the repairl. It could be one of the heater hoses in the back of the engine. Bmws have so many plastic coolant hoses theres no telling which one it is. also watch videos from shoplifetv and nathans bmw shop. Both of those guys show you the leak problems from these cars. Good luck man don't get mad at the car i think once you find that leak the car will be fine also i would do a complete cooling system refresh on any bmws over 120k miles.

True, I know it’s one ridiculous little issue and once I find it, the hassle ends. Either way, the car has still retained its drive ability through all of this. Cheers
