Whats a regret you have in your filmmaking career?

I wish I'd never went to University to learn filmmaking, there were so many things that I learnt by being in the industry that University could never teach me. It felt like I was 3 years behind everyone else by the time I finished. Not that University wasn't helpful in teaching me a lot of film theory, I just wish that I jumped straight into the industry instead. As always great content, very insightful. :)

Not starting sooner, I held off for years thinking I wasn't good enough but that was silly because you can't get good without getting started.

Taking WAY too long to realize that stories can be made stronger when you surround yourself with loving people who care about you and who can bring perspective to the work. The cliché phrase that is so true... teamwork makes the dream work. It may be scary, but let go of the reins, build your team, and then trust them!

Not many people can afford to take a year off let alone have a career that they can just stop for a year and expect to not have major issues getting going again upon trying to return. Given the direction change your channel has made over the past year or so as well as the personal changes you've had I'd say it's definitely for the better so enjoy what very few people have or can do! It also has absolutely nothing to do with being a "creator" and "creator burnout" it's simply just burnout! I'm a corporate analyst, I couldn't be any more burned out with the workload, the system, corporate America, the politics... it's all a bunch of bs that I keep working hard to move out of and I'd kill for a year break... even a month break. I take one week off and the following week back I have two weeks worth of work to get done in one week. 90+ hours working from 8am to 4am to catch up... If you can afford time off, any time off, take it and recharge!

Didn't you watch the video? Matti said he is taking a brake from youtube and focus on his career has a filmmaker. Not like just having a sabatic year or whatever. We all take break so now and then from activities like hobbies, gym, some sport club or even from other people.

I think it's 100% the right choice to take a year (or forever) off. I'm super impressed that you're walking away from it to do what sounds like more of a calling. We'll miss seeing you regularly but you'll still be making an impact from behind the camera.

Absolutely amazing to hear such great praise of the support team you have. Every high profile person has someone creating their media and managing their calendar etc. I wish more creators would include their support team with greater frequencies. It is a 'team' effort and yet rarely do the team members behind the lens get mentioned. Well done.

Matti, I don’t think you need to regret anything. You’ve grown as a person, as a filmmaker and it is a journey. You’re ready to go further now. I became a pro photographer in my late 30s after having a successful career doing something else for 20 years. And thanks to channels like yours I learned a lot and got confidence to go for it). And when I ask myself why I didn’t start sooner, well, because I wasn’t ready. Everything is as it’s meant to be.

I have been a one band for a long time, and recently I worked on my first film set ever (10 mill budget I believe). It made me realize how much joy it was to see people in action who know more than me, to sit around and talk shop, and to see the creative eyes of other people and decision-making.

Glad to see you came here to Japan! Been here since 1998! I camped and shot my most recent video in the Fuji Five Lakes area that was shown in the ending shots! I am no doubt joined by many others when I say that while we don’t want to see you go, we understand that everyone needs a break/reset in life, even/especially for the things we are passionate about or highly skilled at doing. No matter what it is, repetition gets old. We hope the break/rest is not a goodbye, and look forward to your return to uploading videos. In the meantime, those of us who aspire to reach your same level of quality have your extensive video library to watch/re-watch and learn from..!

Great stuff. And I'll be here no matter how long you take. I got a say for me it's been extremely tough to find others. I live in a rural area I started later in life. Not like a lot later but still. There's so many shots that are in my head that require another person. I daydream of finding just one other person that we could take turns filming each other. Anyway always much love. His channels taught me so much and in recent years inspired me. Feel like you never know Maddie could be the next great director producer filmmaker. Or maybe just a very talented person on a great team. Have a great year.

This really spoke to me. Thank you for posting this. I am not sure if you will even see this, but, I am currently in the literal commercial grind as you stated. I make commercials and a variety of other videos for a living. My goal, is in fact, to make the most meaningful and well produced feature films humanly possible. I also, am trying so hard to connect wtih other like-minded filmmakers who want to do the same. My channel currently has no videos and no art work because I deleted it all. I spent several years trying to figure out what I wanted to do on KZread and recently cleared it all hoping I would find a good point to refresh my focus. (Why my channel has nothing but also over 1,000 subscribers.) I am based out of the Denver CO area and there isn't much of a film culture or industry here at all. However, I also won't move my family out of state because they really should be close to the people who love them. I am just grinding away trying to build a cohesive film industry and culture here. One that is positive, uplifting, and friendly for those who have families and priorities beyond making money. Anyway, thank you for all you've done here and for being open and honest about where you're at in your career. I have no doubts that you and your crew will make some amazing films. You have to. God Bless.

Thinking that youtube could replace filmmaking.... because when you make a film like you said you work with so many creatives and take it to another level. So this year im leveling up. No more Youtubing im applying for grants and getting a team together so we can film a full lenght documentary. Not something that people will forget in 5 minutes, but something that takes investigation, planning and deep work.

The best film making tells more than a story . It attempts to add to the conversation of human destiny. Today where anyone stands on Gaza is a milestone in whether the future is a return to barbarism and eventual human extinction or whether the world turns a page and enters a brave new world of discovery. Film is crucial to this journey . Humanity has always sought its reflection as a compass to the future. Be there on the right side of history or be there by ones conspicuous absence... on the wrong side of history. Be interesting to see what Gaza would 'make of you' as opposed to endless vids of ''stuff''. Might save you from becoming a self indulgent narcissist with his head up his arse... just a thought about us all....me included btw

You are great at getting shots, and making things look cinematic, but im confused on what this video even is? what are all these shot's of you walking around and staring off into the distance even for? there's no content substantial enough in the story to warrant these shots. Like if you break it down, the story goes like this. Intro: My biggest regret, also I'm taking a year off Act one part one: off to the mountains, as I ponder my career, my biggest mistake was thinking I could do it all Interlude: We're on a mountain, not sure which one but it's cool, and louder than the city Act one part 2: being a KZreadr gives the idea that a true filmmaker is a one man Crew, because gear is easy and accessible, having a Tyler is valuable for logistics Interlude: shoutout to Tyler for being a logistical genius/very handsome and single. Act one part 3: Chris is manning the gimbal, and Epidemic Sound has planned the trip Ad Break Interlude: Shoutout to Chris for the great gimbal shots Act one part 4: misconceptions about how KZreadrs get all the credit because the crew is often behind the scenes, and this is the big mistake as outlined previously Conclusion to act one: I was a worse filmmaker because I didn't have as much experience working with other professionals as a team, and I want to change that Act two part one?: Chris's & Tylers thoughts on taking a year off, Matti jokes he will make honest product reviews Interlude: Chris got good sleep, Matti found an orange tree Conclusion to act two: Don't follow expectations, set your intentions, and execute. Do you see how there's no real story here? I know it's just a video about your thoughts, but I still think it could be told better. I'm really not trying to hate, I'm trying to give you honest criticism, if I tried to be nice as well this comment would be a mile long. I believe, based on this video, you should scale down your production value, and tell a good story that holds up. I see it like this: A filmmaker is an author of cinema, and good authors don't obsess over book covers, fonts, styling, etc. The story always comes first, not even the content of the story itself, but how it's told. If the story is good written on a napkin, it will be good in a beautifully crafted novel. You have practiced, and achieved, a great level of craftsmanship, but at the cost of storytelling, which is the backbone of filmmaking. So to end off my long as heck comment, take the year off, and learn to tell a story. Study, and test yourself. Take a story, and tell it your way, and then tell it again, but differently, and again. Then compare, contrast, and recompile, experiment with new editors, new writers, production quality. All these things can enhance a story, depending on the story, the 'best' camera may not be the best camera for that story. Does this make sense? idk Have a good year!

Would be nice to be able to afford people to "support" my creative efforts, but I dont have a million subscribers. So,.........the grind is real. No way to get away from that. I'm glad he is able to pay people to help him, and I realize he did not always have that, so I wish him well.

I have more and more RESPECT for Matti the closer it gets to his “break”. Part of me is still shocked he doesn’t pull an Emma Chamberlain and upload a video here and there, even once a month. I’d think doing that would feed the algorithm and make the passive income from older videos better during that time. That being said I’m so stoked for him and his family.
