It’s crazy this video came on my feed. I graduated with a film degree 2 years ago and due to covid and other obstacles, I was never able to peruse filmmaking full time. Now that I’ve gone a couple of years without it, and working jobs I hate, this video reminded me of what I wanna do and learn more about. Thanks for that, Matti.

I too was in a spot of graduating just as pandemic started. Though I was reached out to in 2021 to be apart of a feature as an AC and it just kicked off from there. I still don't even work full time in film. But you just gotta put yourself out there. Find people working on projects and volunteer for free at first. Just gets you more connections and leads to more jobs. A lesson I learned is that I put my full time job first and if I had time say yes to projects. That set me behind though so I quit that job and while I wait for other film jobs just do part time. The other thing is when you cannot find people doing projects make one on your own. Grab a camera and just start shooting.

I was just at my local film festival and I watched some beautiful narrative and documentary films. When looking at their work, none of them are spending much time on social media or KZread. They're out living their lives, working on sets, collaborating to produce original work versus just being another voice in an echo chamber. They were so inspiring and helped me realized where I need to spend my time as it's so precious.

Matti I feel you hit the nail, not only for filmmaking or youtube but for life. We're so used to the instant gratification nowadays that we forget we need to develop the stamina needed to accomplish our goals. I'm almost done with a book called "Discipline equals freedom" from Jocko Willink and I've been talking to my close circle about this thing. We don't feel motivated or excited about our goals every single day, but through discipline we keep doing what's needed to accomplish those goals. Even when we don't want to do a task.

I am currently losing my obsession in filmmaking because the way we create is changing so badly. almost everything is sort form content nowadays. when watching a big movie on the big screen I am so inspired but after I look at instagram my obsession is gone. fighting against it but its a hard fight! but to keep it positive, I am working on my own projects that I love. I am doing it alone without any budget but that makes me creative and creative makes it interesting.

FINALLY! A KZreadr has understood the difference between "making videos for KZread" and being a "filmmaker". KZread is weirdly full of so-called "filmmakers", who are really ..... people with fancy cameras, making videos and tutorials for other people with fancy cameras ..... calling themselves (incorrectly) "filmmakers". There is a huge difference, glad a KZreadr with over 1 million subscribers finally understands this!

Other than pure obsession over the art form, I think there is something else that is paramount to moving forward in the industry that is making people stand out more and more every day. It is also something that is being lost with the way camera technology is moving. That is the understanding of light. It's characteristics, how to shape it, and how it reacts with your camera. Technology is allowing people to put less effort into lighting a scene while still maintaining properly exposed images. At the same time though, it also makes it easier to see when minimal effort is put into it. This is what separates pretty images from a cinema camera and cinematic video. If you can manipulate light properly, you will go much farther in your career. Clients will notice despite not knowing why and other filmmakers will commend you for your work. Of course this only applies to people wanting to become cinematographers. Morale of the story is: Learn how to light properly because no matter how much DR your camera has or how good the color science is, what makes the difference in the way your work is seen is how you light your image.

I would also add that taking breaks is super essential both to your mental health but also to your professional trajectory (which runs a little contrary to the work super obsessively narrative). Giving yourself permission to have space to grow and reflect, just like you are doing with the sabbatical. I'm certain that during your break you will have new revelations about what your filmmaking journey is and where you want to take it from there.

While I loved it in the beginning, because I thought it was so cool to be making a living from a camera in my hand, I’ve been wanting more and more to do something bigger. I want to make my own films, create my own stories, instead of telling others. I’m finally getting that opportunity soon. I’ll be starting a job with a real estate media company shooting house full time. While it may seem like a step backwards, it will only be 40 hours a week instead of every available second like filming weddings is, giving me more time for personal projects.

I get the passion thing, really important, and then you lose the passion and it becomes work for 10 years until you are passionate again and working on the right things. So here is my question, the amateur has the most fun clearly..how do you reconcile the amateur's empty cup and thirst for learning with the professional's profile? We are all clearly someone else's amateur :)

It's an interesting question - but I do think in the YT space people equate 'filmmaking' with cinematography and the various equipment associations - so the craft aspect of filmmaking. I think a bigger part of filmmaking is the spiritual aspect of discovering inspiration and learning to trust and harness your creative instincts. If you're lucky enough to work with a crew they will often free up that space for you through their technical expertise etc.

Honestly I started KZread with ZERO plans to do tutorials or product reviews. All I want to do is learn how to tell compelling stories and I’m obsessed with learning my gear and all the techniques to help me do that. Because when I do that, I’m being true to myself and as my skills grow, so does the response.

I have a big question :) I bought your title packs and Luts for premiere ... is there any chance to make it work for DaVinci? It would be great if I could use it there to without buying it again :) I was rally happy with this stuff

Hi, Matti. I'm the guy from the NY movie screening who asked whether you'll be making a movie of your own in the next couple of years. Anyway, I just watched The Fabelmans and I'm curious to know if you've watched it and whether you can relate to the main character.

Hey, could you do another video on Canon vs Sony updated for 2023? Or is the 2021 video is still relevant?

What does successful actually mean? To have a lot of subscribers on youtube or perhaps to have won a prize or two at a festival or simply be satisfied with what you do and love „make films“ 😍🎥 KZread is a platform for me to show my films, but i don't get the hype about clicks and subscribers. Ultimately everyone has to define their own goals 😉

Money... if you have money already.. or come from a wealthy family.., you probably have the time to completely invest in yourself instead of tapping out and submitting to working something consistent for survival even if you hate it

Cause SOME of them clickbait people and curl them throughout the entire video without actually answer the question. Ain’t that right, Matti Haapoja?

Thought I'd chip in with my two cents on being obsessed with something, as I come from a musical background of having played the violin since the age of three, having spend +10 years learning to produce music and endeavoured into graphic design as my professional career today, with an interest in filmmaking and photography. For me, obsession is the product of having spend countless hours practicing during my childhood. I know it's a bit of a cliche, that violinists never live and always practive 25 hours a day, being obsessed about details nobody else will ever hear 😂 But truth be told, it's what make them so good at what they do. It breeds what I call a 2% mentality, where you constantly keep striving for being that tiny bit better than everybody else at your craft. I can't speak for other people, but my obsession with whatever I do, is also highly driven by curiosity of what lies behind an obstacle and the thought of becoming even better. Unfortunately the downside can sometimes be reduced effectiveness, cause my mind is constantly thinking 'how can this become better'. Over the years I've learned to let go of my unhealthy perfectionism and become a lot better at embracing the creative journey as I go - cause as I grow in my craft, the level I was meticulously striving for and obsessing about, becomes second nature and sits on the backbone, cause it's simply the level I'm actually at 😄
