Yes the title of this video is a little dramatic, but it’s true, i’m in the middle of a sort of life detox where i just want to clear all the rubble from last year and remember: 1) what’s important to me and you know my happiness, and 2) what’s bad for me and my health and my, kind of, sanity. I started changing my ways and thinking this way already beginning of january and I'm still very much feeling the fresh start new year kind of feeling, so without further ado, these are the five things that must go, five things I'm scrapping this whole year. I hope.
I talk about:
- being less available
- stop answering emails
- my diet
- drinking smoothies
- not booking anything in
- having less screen time
- working as a machine
- focusing on what i want
- my minimalist life

What's helped me set boundaries is reminding myself that I need to prioritize myself, my needs, my wants, my health. It's non-negatable & remembering that someone else's urgency is not MY urgency. When the inner chatter comes in, I push it out by saying I AM WORTHY of this small time to myself, I deserve it! 🥰🥰🥰

Omg, the B-roll in this is amazing! Is all of this new or unseen video? Also, I am a physicist and I feel the need to tell you that electromagnetic radiation (light, but longer wavelengths) from your phone is truly harmless. There is not enough energy to interact with your body. Airplane mode being good for your mental health and restfulness is great!

About 6 years ago I got off facebook because it was time-consuming. I recommend using a mindfulness bell. Mine is in my phone and tings every 20 minutes, which makes me and my husband pause whatever we are doing and be aware of 3 breaths- that just means noting your own body. We abstain totally from alcohol and dropped coffee this year in favour of decaf tea.I drink a huge green smoothie (w. apple and banana, lots of greens) during the day which keeps me hydrated and calmer than I was before.

As an anxious perfectionist it took me years to realize I need to pick my battles and prioritize sleep. It was a difficult lesson to learn and I'm still at the beginning of reseting my thought process, but I know it's crucial for my well being. Also accepting that I'm not 20 anymore and it's ok to not have as much energy.

I've avoided the whole ADHD thing since I was diagnosed 13 years ago but I have realized a lot of my anxiety, restlessness, and boredom comes from this, constantly looking for dopamine hits, shopping, food etc. I'm also massively addicted to social media too. The airplane mode is a great idea I need to try it!

How wonderful to find joy is the smallest things. I love a Saturday morning with the sun streaming through my French doors drinking a good coffee. If you appreciate these small things too, then no, you are not a machine Jenny, just young enough and full of life!

Best for cutting screen time on your phone I’ve found is having it in black and white (greyscale) during the day and with a red screen (blue light blocker) at night. You can set up shortcuts for these In the accessibility section. Then you only have it in colour when you need to do social for work. It makes it much less engaging and easier on the eyes at night, plus it cuts the addiction factor.

"That boy. . I'm not worthy." Aw. Sweet. Yesss. It is so interesting to be a minimalist SO long but still are like, "I feel like I have too much stuff," while other people are like, "What are you talking about? I don't really even see anything in your home." Just getting rid of everything feels so good all the time. haha. I have really never been a purse person at all. That bag you have in this video is unique and I always applaud sustainable and ethical practices for products. Your kitchen does look lovely with the sun coming in from that shot. I have a time when the sun is on my bed in my bedroom and I like to lay on it when I see it there. It feels so nice. Then when the sun is going down, it shines through my bathroom directly to a hallway. The light glistens through the hanging plant I have in front of my bathroom window and I just feel it looks lovely. It is those little things that you appreciate.

Last year I found myself in a similar situation - way too much screen time and noise that constantly disturbed me. When I started putting my phone down, setting timers on apps (social media mainly) I noticed such a big difference. I became much more present, calm and focused. Sometimes I can't understand that I scrolled away so much time just to feed my brain with "unreal" dopamine kicks.. Lots of love from a new subscriber in Sweden, Kram!

I’m so happy to see most of my favorite content creators cutting back on screen time these days. I started doing some intentional experiments with it last year and like you said in the video - we are dealing with a LIFE CHANGER here. It feels silly somehow because it feels like we all know this on an intellectual level but it isn’t until you actually start reducing screen time that you realize how much of a life quality upgrade it truly is. Love the video!

One of my favourite KZreadrs has shifted from posting a video once a week to posting one video every two weeks, and honestly, I love it. Not only for her and that it leaves her with more time for her family, but also for me! Her videos feel like a real treat now and I don't feel 'pressured' to make time to keep up with her posting schedule every week. Screen time should be that small treat, like a really good praline, that you get food for thought from and that enriches your life. Unfortunately it has become that thing we are almost 24/7 distracted by. It has become our junk food.

Hi Jenny, there’s a word for it: ambivert. I am one too and I have learned that I need both social times and alone times. In the weekends I need at least 1 day where I don’t have any social obligations. Luckily, being social can also mean that I go out and have a coffee at the cozy coffee bar in my neighbourhood where people just can converse with the other guests even if they don’t know each other. But if you don’t feel like it, that’s also totally fine! I’m editing my comment to add that if you haven’t read it already, I highly recommend the book “stolen focus” by johann Hari. A lot of the things you talk about are discussed in this book, such as screen time, work and productivity, social media etc. It was one of the most important books I read maybe in my entire life. That sounds dramatic, but it really opened my eyes.

Jenny you speak my language. I'm not on instagram any more, I'm taking life slower. My 'word' for the year is recommitment. I'm recommiting to myself, to minimalism, and to the small joys I find everyday. Like you, I go hard sometimes and I get myself in a tizzy. This year, its all about realigning with myself and who I am. Thank you for the video. 💕

Wow Jenny, this one really hit the nail on the head! I am older so I am not involved in the work cycle anymore, but I paint and that really takes me away from everything, like a meditation (on a good day). Now let's talk airplane mode! My partner drilled this into me a long time ago..leaving the phone, or any device on in not healthy! I def turn it off at night and I should do so more during the day. We recently had a major storm and had a 2 night power outage. The first day was a real drag but by day 2 I was not missing tech one bit...and yes you do sleep better. Now it is back and I am going, as per your advice, to try to give my routine habits (and general waste of time) a break..and perhaps focus on the shadows on my wall, when the sun returns! Thank you Jenny. I love how you love life and we all should be more grateful for every day we are here and all our ups and downs. One more thing, do vegan bags last long?? These are beautiful!

Hi, Jenny. Pre-planning things in the most minute detail is too controlling and leads to stress. Also, very often in life things do not go as expected. I used to teach languages and planning lessons was an unavoidable part of the job. I gradually started going to classes with a smaller list of objectives but a bigger set of materials I could use. I let spontaneity and improvisation take over. My students loved it. I wasn’t following a script, but allowing them to participate and influence lessons more and even go beyond pre-planned objectives if I felt they were ready.

I like the adding in the good to help push the rubbish out. Ever since returning to further my education and career last fall, I’ve been setting a 5-10 time for simply sitting in silence before beginning all my daily tasks and oh man!- it helps! Just that little pocket to breathe helps so much, and I love how it feels like for just a few minutes, I can calmly observe from a little island in my brain the time passing and my breath rhythmically flowing. ❤ be gentle to yourself my dears 😊 and thank you Jenny

Dear Jenny, I have found a simple way for myself to see if I am doing well and to always be close to "me": I pay attention to my breathing every few hours. If I find it difficult to take a deep breath, this is usually a sign that I'm not feeling well. If I can take a really deep breath straight away, I'm usually fine. Maybe this will work for you too. :)

I’ve started to move social media, my school app and such to my ipad instead of having them on my phone. This way it’s not contently in my pocket. I need to go a step further to check them and do so when I feel like it. It’s worked quite well for me. After this video I’m considering only having the email app on there as well. I also have my phone on “focus” between 19.00 and 08.00. Most people don’t need to be able to reach me 24/7.

I started airplane-ing my phone since you mentioned it in your recent video and, my goodness, I was so focused for the time while I was working. I want to airplane my phone more often, but I think I’m always worried about missing an important message from a loved one, as unlikely as that might be if I’m away for a few hours. Does anyone have advice for this?
