gedoogbeleid is San Francisco today. but we also have vertrutting too. The Netherlands as destination for pot is probably not long for this world. With the US states of Colorado and Washington outright legalizing pot, and California and probably DC not far behind, the US tourist flow to smoke will diminish. And Portugal is even more permissive than either The Netherlands or the US. However, The Netherlands won't likely live down its reputation as destination for a long, long time because popular belief dies hard.

As an American, I had no idea it was legal... I assume it will be here as well in the next decade or two (for the most part). Never tried it myself though...

These things is what makes Amsterdam unique, and gives it layer of character, among all the other great things about the city and country. Keep the conservatives and over government away. You don't want Holland to turn into America

banning weed from the netherlands, would only make it go illegal. illegal drugs go to dealers. dealers have other, more heavy drugs, like xtc and cocain. the jump will be much smaller if you get it from a dealer then from a shop! besides the money, wich is something the goverment has never enough of

Watched this series of video's with pleasure, and some mixed feelings. I am Dutch and proud to be, but some of these speakers were either completely wrong or too 'leftwing' for my taste (left wing is Amsterdam, in NL all know that). I think in this topic especially, drugs, we, the Dutch are under pressure of the EU and that's not a good thing, especially if you consider the fact that France is actually the largest producer of weed, the only difference is that they use it in industry, hemp as fibers to make clothes, ropes and such, so it's kind of sarcastic for them to say we should stop growing the shit, especially when the the majority of drug tourism in NL comes from France. Personally I do think we should legalise and here's why; the MONEY! if we legalise it would take little time to get out of our national debt and be the richest country in the EU if not the world. (probably one of the reasons the rest of the EU is against our policy on the matter as we are too powerful for their taste already) The other thing I'd like to voice my opinion about is the whole 'zwarte piet' thing. I know, like many of the Dutch do, that the Netherlands was the last country in the world to abolish slavery, and that this is what most, or all foreigners see. But I also like to take in account other countries traditions, Icelandic people kill hundreds of dolphins every year, sure greenpeace is going into a fit because of that but the icelandic people simply say it is tradition and that the yearly slaughter of dolphins provides food like it has for hundreds of years so why change, I tend to agree. On the topic of holidays, why is zwarte piet any worse than the little people helping santa? Imagine all the little people of the world throwing a fit against America's tradition of portraying little people as helpers of Santa Claus, it's a ridiculous notion but no different than what we face here in Holland. There is nothing racist about our Sinterklaas, that is what other people (dark coloured immigrants) make of it. Fact, Saint Nicholas got his black (Morish) helpers by freeing them from prosecution or slavery. In exchange they help him spread gifts to good kids. The thing that pisses the Dutch people off is simple; if you want to live here in our country we expect 4 things of you, 1: learn the language, 2: respect our traditions, heritage and values, 3: work for your money and 4: pay your taxes. The general feeling around the 'Zwarte piet' discussion is; if you don't like our traditions, then don't live here. Simple no?
