MY 6 YEAR JOURNEY: Becoming a Sonographer

Do you think you're too old to become a sonographer? Do you think it's too late to switch into this career? Wondering if it’s too late to change majors? Do you doubt yourself? This video is for YOU! Hear MY journey so you can potentially start YOURS! See if the timing is right for YOU!
Hi everyone! My name is Geselle and I am a registered ultrasound technologist / Sonographer who strives to spread ultrasound awareness and PAWSitivity. I'm here to tell you that this field is POSSIBLE to get into, that it is HARD but WORTH the time spent. Yes, it took me 6 years to become a Sonographer. I did not go the traditional 2 year associates degree route and I definitely did not finish college in 4 years. I had ups and downs, failures, times of doubts and confusion. But with all of that uncertainty, I am certain I went through everything for a reason. I absolutely love the ultrasound career field, and everything it has to offer.
Many have asked what my ultrasound journey looked like. When did I take my ARDMS exam? When did I get my first job? Was it difficult?
This video explains my timeline and briefly why it took me so long. I also have another video explaining a more detailed journey which will be linked below. (How I became an ultrasound tech | from nursing to sonography) I hope you take the time to listen to my story, when I did classes, when I graduated, and when I started taking the ARDMS board exams to become a registered diagnostic medical sonographer. It was a LONG, difficult journey, but it went by soooo fast. And if I could do it again, I would! Thank you SO MUCH for being here. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask in the comment section. I'm here for you, and I hope to help one person with this journey of mine.
You can do it! Don't give up, and follow your dreams! Every person's journey looks and is different. Everyone takes their own time. Everyone has their own obstacles. I want you all to know your education is not a race nor is it something to be rushed. Don't be discouraged if things don't go the way as planned. Find your motivation. Surround yourself with likeminded people. And I hope you know you're not alone in your journeys. Respect each other and be kind to one another.
If you happen to enjoy this video, I'd appreciate it if you LIKED it and SUBSCRIBE to the channel for more fun adventures! I would love to have you join the SonoGes family. Every single one of you means so much to me! As always, take care, be safe, stay PAWSitive, be KIND, and we'll see you in the next one! XOXO, Ges.

    Hi I’m a sophomore at UNLV and I’m a pre-nursing student. But I’m having major doubts. Tbh I’m not really sure what I want to do, and it’s really hard to find out cuz of this pandemic :( I know I want to work with children and I love helping people but idk it’s for me. I love math. I’m also a big introvert and I’ve heard so many horrible stories about the hospital and the toxic work environment. Being in control of someone’s life sounds so scary and there’s so much pressure. Do you have any suggestions what I should do since I have to technically figure out my major by next semester? I feel like everything is going by so quickly and I just want a break but I would lose my financial aid :(

    No matter what I think of, I always think of the cons and that I would be dumb. It’s just a constant battle trying to figure it out. Had too many breakdowns lately because of it. Lately I feel like I care too much of other people and it just pains me when they are in pain but I really want to help. But I cry easily and I feel weak because of it

    Hi Chy🤍 I hear you, I see you, I know and can u understand what you’re going through. I was in your shoes. I, too, would cry.. feel depressed.. crazy confused and unsure. But me finding love and passion for ultrasound didn’t begin until I took the radiology 101 class at UNLV! Maybe take it to see what you like? Since you have to stay in classes for financial aid, do some classes that will help your GPA/ potential other majors, etc. Talk amongst your friends, peers, guidance counselor. Perhaps do more research on other jobs, fields, KZread has a whole other world on it. I’d say shadow someone, but not sure what restrictions are. Call offices or places to see if they’ll let you shadow, interview other sonographers or X-ray techs, etc. You like children and wanting to help others is a great place to start! As a sonographer you won’t completely be in control of someone’s life like a nurse or doctor per say, but you are a part of helping them. You are being a helping hand, a detective in their quest to figure out what’s going on. Definitely take a deep breath in, look within, and ultimately figure out what your passion is. As an introvert, you will learn, you will grow, and the medical field will help you do that. I hope you find this answer helpful and if you’re on Instagram definitely message me! 🤍✨ Take care and let me know if you want to know anything else! You’ve got this, I know it’s scary and uncertain times, but what is certain is that only you know what’s in your heart! 🤍

    As someone who struggled for 10 years with finding a job I was passionate about, I definitely worried about going back to school knowing full well I was going to be over 30 when I graduated. I read somewhere whether or not if you go back to school because of how old you'll be you're still going to be that age so why not do something you love. It's definitely scary feeling like you're starting over, but I don't regret going back to school.

    Hi Kforkris!! Thank you for sharing your story. Passion is something not many look for in a career. I’m glad you went back to school. Being over 30 doesn’t mean anything! You can do this and are just as capable as that 18 year old. You’re wise, have experience, and I’m really digging where you read that info! We have so many years ahead of us. Think about it. If a person were to graduate at 50, you still potentially have 15-20 years, especially nowadays, to work and do something you love and enjoy! It’s all about perspective. And I’m happy for you! Thanks for tuning in!!! 🤍

I'm that 40 something, career changing person who still wonders sometimes if I'm too old for this field & if I'd be discriminated against during hiring bc of age all while still pressing forward! 😆 But I prayed & said Well, all I can do is my part- God, you'll do the rest! I am currently looking into getting back into school for sonography, and it's been tough with the pandemic to getting things going. But I agree if you really want something, you'll make things happen! I am in my 30's and I feel too old to go back to school (again) I have a degree in a completely different field, and the medical field has really been calling to me. You’re so right!! This is mainly for those who are usually into their majors about 2-3 years and wonder if they should switch. Or people who are switching from a completely different subject like music or business. Many nursing and other healthcare students I’ve spoken to in their early 20s are confused and saddened that they potentially want to change majors and can’t finish their degree in 2-4 years. This is to encourage them to not feel bad. That everyone has a different timeline. They are still young and that others also have been through that. I was also in their shoes thinking, “well now I won’t finish at 22.” There are also many moms, women, men, and dads in their late 30s and 40s who have switched into ultrasound thinking they cannot do it, but I’m here to say they can if they really want this! Many of my coworkers didn’t start until later in life, also many who have had kids, even grown kids, while they graduated from their program! Sometimes life hands us a different pair of cards dealt than we thought. Everyone’s personal journey looks different and I’m happy to shed a light on the fact that this question is asked plenty in the Facebook groups alone! ✨ Hopefully it helps one soul out there! Thanks for always being so kind and supportive! 🤍

Also creating a binder or folders and organizing your notes can help too! I personally like to write/ type/ and re-write my notes. I like to talk to my friends or coworkers to make sure I know what I am studying and understanding it fully. If you can explain it, then you're golden!! I appreciate you supporting the channel. Your content has made me feel so much better and excited to dive into something new :). I just had a question that I’ve been dying to know: what type of exams do students practice on each other? Is is just abdominal exams? I’m super shy about having others practice on my body and just want to know what I’d be walking into.

As far as exams in lab, we did abdomens, renals, aorta, venous/arterial arms and legs, and carotids. We didn't do breast, testicular, or tvag, those exams we learn in clinicals. I hope you comment on more videos and let me know what other questions you have!

    I'm a 32 year old dental hygienist in San Francisco and am looking to switch careers. I'm going to keep my license current, but I feel like I've reached my peak in my field and am bored. There are hardly any growth opportunities, unless I decide to become a dentist, which is a hard no for me. So here I am researching..... I'm curious if your classmates are as successful as you are? Did everyone land a steady job out of school?

  • @lolgeselle

    Hi C T!! I give you props as a dental hygienist what you do isn’t easy either!! I’m glad you’re looking to switch, if that’s what’s in your heart; go for it! Yes, my classmates and actually 90% of students from my program (since it began) have had successful careers. Nearly everyone got hired right away. And the 10% I know who didn’t were the ones who dropped out, or decided ultrasound wasn’t for them. Ultrasound technologists enjoy their jobs so many do not leave nor retire early.. but there are lots of job opportunities! There are two successful programs in Vegas and I can surely say they both have great results in students getting jobs after the graduation. All hospitals and outpatients in the city are nearly filled with students from the two programs and were still looking and hiring everywhere! It all depends on where you want to work and live. I hope this answer helps! Keep on doing your research and I hope you find something you enjoy! ✨

    I watch your youtube video they are so very helpful. I have a question and I would like your honest answer. I'm 52. I ve be a medical assistant 32 yrs. Over the last few years I've been researching different DMS schools. I'm so undecided in which route to go. One school not a waiting list but cost 50,000 but it's a one stop shop..everything included, for the most part reviews ok and you learn 3 modalities...abd, echo and ob/gyn. The other school is at a hosp...except 12 students every 24mos, but with them I need 5 classes to complete before 2023 and decision will be made in 4/2023...there's other schools but you pay as you go but those want work because I have to work....sorry, For long email..any thoughts.

    thank you so much for the support! ahh, man I see what you mean. well, 50k is a lot for a school. it depends, you gotta weigh your pros and cons. if you're not willing to wait then the expensive route sounds more enticing, and if you are willing to wait for cheaper then why not wait? but it's ultimately a tough decision. maybe speak with friends, family, or the people who know you best to help you decide!

    I want to pave my path to sonography but I'm concerned because I already have chronic wrist pain where I've gotten multiple steroid injections to numb the pain. I know there's talk of how this career impacts your wrist, is there any way to utilize equipment without hurting the wrist or possibly using your non-dominant hand? Also, were you able to work when you got into the program?

  • @lolgeselle

    @lolgeselle

    It’s going to definitely be hard on your wrist. You can scan with the opposite hand you’ll just have to learn and adjust. You have to be aware of your wrist placement and how you hold the probe. But over the years our wrists will wear out. I did work during the program! I was a full time student and worked part time.

My supervisor is male. Our most senior tech is male. One of my favorite echo techs is male. There are plenty of male echo and vascular techs. It’s not against males at all. Unfortunately many think it’s all about scanning babies so only women must do this job, but no. Men can and are very much so capable of doing this career! • @lolgeselle

    @lolgeselle

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Jazzie!! Thanks for watching and asking a question!! Typically the university or program will help you find your clinical as many programs have contracts with hospitals and outpatient facilities. Some programs rotate you, others make you stay for a period of time. I do, however, have seen some programs make you the student select and find the place of clinical. I’ve seen some students have trouble with this but many just message the ultrasound Facebook groups with their concerns to find someone willing to help, or they call every place in their city that has a potential ultrasound clinical site. If you’re curious about this, I’d say contact whichever program you end up applying to to see how they function. Hope this answer helps!

This also explains my timeline. Generally a sonographer will take 2-4 years to finish thats if you do all your pre requisites and get into the program right away. For others, this isn’t the case as some get pushed back, retake classes, don’t get in the first time, etc. These programs are difficult to get into right away.
