Oh. so nice to see the fruits. I have a similar fruit tree given to me by one of of our local famous tree cultivar saying it is cross between plum and apricots. only we call it here as Plumcots. When I tell my friends and share the fruits they believe that such fruit exists. Plumcots have good taste and better shelf life.

I bet they’re delicious! I’ve yet to find a plum/apricot cross that I didn’t like.

Congratulations on the bumper harvest, i believe stone fruits bear bumper crops alternate years. Have you looked into Jujubes, they grow well in socal and fruits around sep/October.

Thanks! I discovered jujubes for the first time about 5 years ago and I like them. I would debate planting a tree but I have a friend with a massive tree and she gives me bags of them every year so for now I get to enjoy swapping harvests 😄.

I loved learning about the history and background of how pluots came to be and the little nuances of hybridization! Great video, thanks for sharing! Now I want to try all the varieties!

Now you already know that I was stopping by 😂! I want a Dapple Dandy soooo bad but I just don’t have the space for it. I guess I’ll have to learn how to graft. I do have a Spring Satin Plumcot though and the fruit is very good but NOT as good as a Dapple Dandy. Any who, thanks for sharing and as always, stay blessed fam! -Calvin

😂 They’re so good aren’t they?! The dapple dandy is so popular I bet you could find someone near you growing one who might give or sell you a scion. I know a lot of local gardening groups will do scion swaps. Might be worth asking around! I bought my tree bare root for $25 and it has clearly paid me back!

Pluots are great, and I was never even a big plum eater haha. Dapple Dandy is one of my favorites. Splash and Emerald Drop are good trees too. Flavor Queen doesn't produce well for me and tree grows like a weed. Flavor King is great flavor but tree grows slow and doesn't always produce great. The hang time of pluot fruit is great and they don't have much pest or fungus issues at all.

@@herhomeandharvest Ya they're good trees and fruit. Sometimes people focus on the fruit quality but don't talk much about the tree itself. Burgundy plum is really good tree as well. Super heavy producer, tastes good, easy to prune to smaller size and great pollinizer for pluot trees.

Luther Burbank claimed in the 1800's that he crossed an Apricot and Plum, but nobody' believed him. Genetic tests much later proved he in fact did. Floyd Zaiger took plumcot varieties that are 50/50 plum/apricot which weren't very good tasting and back crossed them with different plum varieties, thus creating pluots which have been a commercial success.

you should grow out some of the pits you know your going to have a mix of the dapple and grenade ...

That would be a really great experiment! I bet a crunchier version of the dapple dandy would be the perfect pluot!

I like them more crunchy also. I’m not sure how well they’d grow in TX, so I’ve held off on getting trees. Your climate is great for everything.

Depending on what your summers look like, you might have a good chance of growing them. I know they’ll tolerate a freeze and they have handled temps up to 115° here in my yard. I know the summers can be brutal though with long stretches of days over 100, so you might need to find a spot with a little bit of shade and make sure they’re pruned well for maximum airflow. I have family near central TX growing peach trees so I think they would grow where they are.

Dapple Dandy requires 400-500 chill hours. I think it will not produce fruits in my zone 10b.

I don’t think I hit 500 chill hours where I’m at and they’re doing pretty good. With the new usda zone changes I am now in an area marked 10a. That being said, this last winter was a bit warmer and there is a lot less fruit on the tree. Could be the weather or maybe that they produce more every other year. I’m looking forward to seeing how they’ll continue to grow either way. I try to take the chill hours as more of a suggestion than a hard rule. I know a lot of gardeners who push the limits on chill hours and can get trees to produce with almost half the “required“ amount. Plus Pluots were developed in zone 9 so they tend to be a bit more forgiving to warmer climates. All that to say, I would plant one of these again if I moved to zone 10b. I like the fruit enough that it’s worth the risk 😋!

@@herhomeandharvest Thank you! Actually I was surprized when I checked my zone last month - it showed 10b, but before it was 10a. We'll try to plant or graft more pluots, they look so nice.
