My 1st winter hammock camping experience. Camping in the mountains
My buddy JP and I head into the mountains of New Hampshire for some winter camping adventure. And we got it! It was a windy, bushwhacking adventure through some beautiful birch glades and up into the mountains. We spent a windy night in the woods. This was my first time winter hammock camping, first time using a new jacket, first time using a new cook pot, first time using a new stove and my first time trying a particular freeze dried meal that was a gift to me from a subscriber! It was also the first time JP has been to the summit of Mt Isolation! One of New Hampshires 4,000 footers. And it was incredible up there! We timed it perfectly! There were a lot of first times on this trip! It's good in the woods
Enjoy
JP made a solid video effort of the trip as well. You can view that here, • Winter Hammock Camping...

One of the many things I love about snow backpacking is that the BEER STAYS COLD! The mountains of New Hampshire look amazing! Nice snow shovel (chair) too. Thanks again for showing us around the East Side. You guys rock.

Thank you. Beer stays real cold, it's great! These White mountains are my favorite place on earth! Those chairs make excellent shovels! They do the trick. Thank you for stopping by!
I don't know that I've ever even seen that summit before - if I ever make it up your way that may be the new top of my list.

Hey Al! I haven't had this tarp very long, 5, maybe 6 months. It is awesome so far! I dig it!
Nice hike, I bought one of those little BRS stoves years ago, for $13.00 ! They are great little stoves. Love the views on Isolation, me and a friend summited during a lightning storm, very scary. Not a good place to be when a storm comes in. Thanks for sharing. 👍

This was my first time using that stove! It worked great. Even in the winter, when everyone says you can't use a canister stove 🤣 $17 from Hilltop Packs! I couldn't pass it up any longer. Isolation is a great peak. Many don't like it, but it has long been one of my favorites. When every other parking lot is stuffed full of cars from Mass😉 you can rest assured knowing there will be very few cars in that lot. At least the summit is not exposed for long. You can get back in the trees quick in nasty weather. My cousin and I were attempting a Pemi loop years ago. We were just shy of the summit of Lafayette when a storm blew in quickly. A quick nasty burst of rain wind and lightning. It was scary. Getting up and over that summit, and heading down towards Garfield was one of the craziest things I have ever experienced.
Very nice adventure, enjoyed you taking us along. Kudos to Steve Hawk for hooking you up with a meal!

That is a common feeling for many. On the way out, many people ask themselves why, and follow that up with never again. LOL. The misery is a major factor in the reward after the fact. You put in a solid effort on this one. Good work man
I love the take on the old fashioned. I've been loving that boot in a bag trick. The couple of times I winter camped this year it was wonderful putting on warm boots in the morning. Such beautiful views!!! Thank you for bringing us along.

It is beautiful in the birch glades windy or not. Your pack was brilliant and your coat looks the goods., liking the colour very much. Now you have me watching The Gate. Have been out of range here in hot Aust. so it's cool to see some bushwhacking and your gorgeous smile Justin. Views are incredible. Thanks so much. Good you went ahead with JP.

I'm late watching this one. I'm busy getting ready for my AT thruhike; watching others who are leaving early. I always appreciate your photography and narration. I saw on Tim Buckley's channel that you recently bought a Hammock Gear DCF Winter Palace tarp with doors. I love mine. I can pitch it to the ground for wind protection and still walk in, stooping just a bit. Looking forward to your review of it. For most people, a 40 degree Superior Gear Hammock is perfect, since you can probably use it up to 60 degrees without overheating, and you can add underquilts according to the temperatures that you expect to encounter. I bought a -20F one, since I have an ultralight Hummingbird Hammock for anything above freezing. Take care, brother. Thanks again!👍💪✌️👊

Just got it in the mail a couple days ago!!! Pumped! My superior is a 30º. If it was a 40º I would consider it perfect. I am going to be switching over to my Warbonnet set up for the warmer months. At 40º it is quite a bit lighter than the Superior. I ordered a Superior 15º under quilt for the set up back in December.....still haven't received it yet....I am bummed about that. Thank you for watching and commenting Daniel. Best of luck on the AT!! That is exciting. I am looking forward to hearing about your adventure. Take care buddy. Cheers

Wow, gorgeous views. Well done. I also use a blackbird xlc with a wookie underquilt. Been wondering about the Superfly. I like the door option on it. Guess I'll pull the trigger on it. Thanks for taking me away from my boring south Texas evening and letting me dream a little!

The superfly is awesome. I have really enjoyed it. The pitch options are many. I will admit, I don't use the doors often. but I am happy to have them when I want them. Awesome in foul weather and winter camping.

Peak Refuel meal, I find their food to be bland at their best and yes that was only 400 ml grams short of my daily intake (according to my Dr.). Now for that Redemption bourbon cocktail, that looked fantastic. Another great video. spectacular view at the end.

For a freeze dried meal. I found it to be quite tasty. I'm certainly not going to run out a buy a bunch of them, but it was enjoyable. They don't hold a candle to real food that is for sure. That redemption bourbon cocktail was amazing! What a treat that was! We lucked out on the summit that day. No view and stiff wind the day before, and by the time I was driving out of the parking lot the clouds had blown in, the peaks were socked in and the snow had begun. Our summit bid was perfectly timed!! I am glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching and commenting
Just came back from a 3 day winter camping trip. My buddies were all in hot tents and I brought along my superior gear hammock which I just got. I don’t think I will ever be able to sleep on the ground again on a pad! Got the best sleep ever winter camping in a hammock. Hope you got a good nights rem sleep!

Hot tents are over rated. Over the past year I have been taking to hammock camping. I have always used tents or tarps, sleeping on the ground. Never had an issue with it either, until I realized how comfortable a quality hammock is. Now every time I have a tent, I find myself wishing I had my hammock LOL!!! Amazingly comfortable.

Thanks a ton! It has been a low snow kind of year. But there is still some snow in the mountains!! The hammock system worked out. Getting cold never happened. If I had worn my down pants I would have had to take them off. I am confident I could take the same system into colder temps safely. That is good to know. I also have another 15º down under quilt n the way. That will be a monster combined with the 30º superior hammock! We got lucky on summit day! The view was glorious! What a treat. Thanks for stoping by! Cheers

Nice summit. No wind and a clear view is a total home run, either one can ruin the experience. When Mt. Washington hit that record my camp in Maine hit -25F at night. It was -20 from 5 pm to 9 am with the wind chill from -45 to -50F the whole time. Absolutely brutal, the worst I’ve seen in all the time I’ve ever spent winter in Vermont and Maine. Nice trip good mission and video
