My 1965 Mustang Gets Fuel Injection | FiTech EFI Install
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this video, I teamed up with FiTech to create an overview of how to install their Mustang Total Package. The kit comes with everything you need to run their system (tank, lines, fuel pump, throttle body, fuel filter, wiring, etc). I can't wait for you guys to see the car in action. It totally changed my car, and it's incredible. Huge shout out to the FiTech team!

Any problems yet with the fi tech?
I did a FiTech install on my 65 289 a few years ago. Initial impression was "WOW", great technological upgrade from the gassy/fumey old 4 bbl I was running. I was really impressed with the cold starts and driveability of the car, on longer road trips I was pulling 18-19 mpg with my sloppy old BW T-10 tranny which was making the engine tach out at +3200 rpm at highway speeds. Again, super impressed. A/F ratio was staying right at 14:1, engine running cool, idle was super smooth....what's not to like about all that ? Then the problems began.......I was headed to a car show about 5 hrs away from home, super hot day (100°f) and about halfway there I felt the engine stumble just ever so slightly and it came out of it. Got to the car show and the engine didn't want to start, I was perplexed as nothing appeared wrong, fuel pump was coming on, had spark, nothing else seemed off base. Finally it restarted but the problem persisted through the rest of the weekend, hard starts with excessive cranking time. By sheer luck and maybe some prayers from Henry Ford himself I got the car to make the 5 hr trip back home, pulled up in front of the garage and shut her down and it never started again. Called FiTech and did the all of trouble shooting (including being emailed new files to load into the ECM ) all to no avail. Pulled it and sent it back to FiTech. Diagnoses = fried ECM. FiTech repaired under warranty, my only cost was shipping and the car being down for a couple months. Received my FiTech about 60 days later and reinstalled, this one made it even less time than the first (I noticed it was not getting the prime shot when the key was cycled). Called Fitech again and we went through all the trouble shooting again and I ended up taking it back off a second time. Once again bad ECM and once again FiTEch repaired under warranty. Six or so weeks later I've got the unit back in my hands and put it on the car and it lasted a couple months and the no-start issue arose yet again. Back to FiTech it goes, their diagnosis again was a fried ECM and by this time my warranty had expired however FiTEch stood behind it and repaired it at no charge but also by this time I was done with the unreliability of the unit and purchased an Edelbrock carburetor and put it on the car. In about 15-18 months and less than 3000 miles I burned up three ECM's and had close to 6 months of downtime on the car and I just couldn't take it anymore. Was the install done by a professional? No, but I did everything correctly. New fuel tank with in tank high pressure pump, high pressure feed and return lines, O2 sensor welded in, all wiring was soldered and heat shrunk with nothing other than the tach wire near the distributer, it was a very clean install. My theory is that the ECM on the FiTech units are integral to the throttle body itself and I dont think the ECM can take the heat of being nestled in the valley and it just burns them up. With all the problems I had, I did more extensive research and it looks like others have experienced similar failures, should I have gone with a Holley Sniper? There are a lot of good reviews out there but if you research it enough, there are a lot of problems with Holleys kit as well. I'll stick with my tried and true old school carburetor, get a little less fuel efficiency but have peace of mind that it wont break or leave me stranded and in the worst case scenario, if I need something for the carb I can probably get it at any O'reilly's seven days a week. FOR SALE - one 400hp Go Street FiTech fuel injection unit. Less than 3000 miles on it, WORKS GOOD. Make Offer.

That's the curse of this sorta thing, if you're lucky enough for it to work it's great but otherwise it seems better to save the time and money and stick with the carb.

fitech has a VERY spotty reputation. I WAS going to buy their dual quad system for my 427 Fairlane but after researching online and my tuner tell me NO WAY I went with the Holley dual quad terminator system. Should be here soon and I'll be posting up videos once I get it installed.

Once you go to the "dark" side, you wonder why did your wait so long. I bought a new fuel injected outboard for my boat years ago and it was nice to just turn the key and go. No more priming bulbs and warming up on the docks. You'll be the hit of the cruise ins.

I put Edelbrock’s EFI into my Firebird (much more advanced than what FiTech or Holley offer with EFI). It was great, and my car ran so good, but it just wasn’t the same. Also, I had to get a shop to install the thing since it was way more than I could handle, and that meant I couldn’t ever really work on it myself. I will not be going to EFI on my Dart.

Hey Ben! Been following your build for a while. I went with an EFI for my 65 Fastback/ 94 302 build and it's wicker. It was a different brand so in order to not annoy your sponsors I won't name it, but I'm going to say moving from carb to EFI - and even from Foxbody EFI to modern fuel injection tech - is the best mod I've done so far. There is literally no downside to it.

@@FourSpeedFilms Not gonna lie - I farmed this project out to a shop that has done a few of them. It's actually not that difficult a job but it's time consuming and, yes, having a lift is pretty much necessary. I'm looking forward to your post-drive video. I think you're going to be very pleased with the results. You should see improved fuel economy, better performance, instant throttle response, and a way more smooth power curve. Plus there's a lot to be said about instant starting and perfect idle every time. I went with a system that has in in-tank fuel pressure regulator so there's no need for a return line. I think the next step may be a proper fuel cell (I hope you appreciate the irony of welding a fire-protection plate between the cabin and trunk then drilling two fuel holes in it 😆).
Looking forward to what you think about the EFI. I am very interested, but still love the carbs!

@@FourSpeedFilms It truly is, but I did just have an injector seize while I was in Ocean City Maryland for a car event. Manages to free it by pulling the injector, cleaning it out and hooking it up to a spare car battery to get it to pulse again...... reinstalled and worked fine. not bad for a restaurant parking lot repair LOL
I cannot wait for the following videos. I’m SO curious because I hear mixed reviews about Fi-Tech. I’ve been looking pretty heavily at Holley Sniper EFI. Honestly, I think the bad reviews were the ones who didn’t know what they were doing. My old high school buddy runs Fi-Tech on his wife’s Nova and he’s had no issues. I’m curious about the day to day usage and the learning process for this system. Please keep ‘em coming! I appreciate it a lot!

This is a cool instal for sure. The only thing I don’t like which I can’t tell for sure from the camera shots is the o2 sensor, it looks like it’s at about 3 or 9 o’clock on the exhaust. Condensation can build up and ruin the sensor, ideally you want it between 10 and 2 somewhere. Otherwise this is awesome!

I have three of their systems, a Mean Street bought in 2016 on the 65 GTO running E85, a 400hp unit for the Cuda's 340 that I got last year along with a 1200hp power adder dual quad system going on the 68 LeMans. I have a tunnel ram on the LeMans right now that turns the carbs sideways, so if I want to run the EFI I have to built conversion plates for it. The EFI will go on the 6-71 I have for it without a problem. The blower is for after I have sorted the car and the engine out, since its a fresh build. I use external pumps, mounted lower than the tank. My cars are so freakin loud I only hear them on start up, its nice being able to tell its working when I prime it. Easy to get to and they are cheap since I can use my stock tanks. The Mean Street gets about the same mileage as my Qjets do on the GTO, but it starts easy and the tuning is no tools with the handheld. I have an O2 bung in both collectors so I can run a wideband in the other one, I use the GTO to test my E85 conversions on carbs. Last year I did a first start video, and I didn't have enough fuel for a 50F cold start on E85, it would fire then die, not a problem with the warm weather you get and the smaller engine. 455s want lots of fuel on start up. I was trying to get it to start and run without touching the throttle. The Cuda had one of my Qjets on it at the time, and it needed lots of throttle movement to keep it running.. lol. Been thrashing to get the LeMans going, I have a chance to dyno it this weekend at a show and see just how much power my 505 inch Pontiac will put down at the wheels without boost. Its a car I pulled out of a pasture in 2014, for all of $300, but its not very rusty considering. I think I have the tunnel ram sorted out so it doesn't have vacuum leaks, the only factory parts on this engine are the camshaft eccentric and timing chain cover, so every part of it has needed just a little bit of massaging to work. If I don't get the 505 going I will take the 79 Formula and dyno its 461 that should be making around 550hp/near 600ftlbs at the crank. I have some mouthy chevy guys to embarrass.

I know you are in California but you deleted your heater? Biggest difference and probably the only thing that bothered me on a FI car was the was the one way Rev. You sit idle and bip the throttle it revs, then coasts down. Carb it goes wha ga!
I love this car! I'll wait and see how the injection works out for you but I think it is the wrong direction for this car. Your dad is a hot rod guy. Follow his lead and make your carb work properly, then you won't have the issues you spoke of. I know you're young and you speak with that California accent where you slur your words and speak very rapidly. For example, cutting of the T's at the end of words. This is fine when talking to your buddies but when narrating a video, try to slow down and enunciate properly. Maybe watch some shows that have voice over like old school "Wonder Years" TV show as an example. I subscribed to your channel quite some time ago and it is fun to see you progress with this car. I'd like to see your channel grow too.
