Hello! I just did my own dreads! I am 52... ! My cut was down to my chin and I wanted extensions. I got me some real hair, dreaded them and then got a friend to help me with the sectioning and I did my own hair dreads and added the extensions. Did that in one day! All day though...... I am soooooooo happy with the results and everyone loves them. I feel 10 years younger if not more and I finally feel I found my real hairstyle that defines me. So for all the "oldies" like me out there, don't hold back. It's your life, your hair, your wellbeing! Go for it!

I'm so here for this!!! Thank you! I wanted to lock my hair for decades...I finally did it when I turned 63 lol... yeah... anyway like you I taught myself. my hair was growing out from a pixie cut...I wore a beanie for a year. At the same time I stopped coloring it. No extentions and some are at my waist. I love my hair and so happy you're here! I enjoy all your videos... you're super cool 🙌✌️

Almost forgot🙈! I’m 64 & getting dreads is number one on my bucket list. Last April, I chopped a foot off my hair. It’s at my waist now. Been wanting dreads for almost 20 years. I did little braids years ago(60!😱) & loved them. One day I will get them🙏🏻

i’ve tried to have dreads three times in my life and twice they were done very wrong and looked terrible (think Sideshow Bob) and once they were extensions my friend from Cosmetology school did, that i thought looked cool but people told me they looked gross or bad only to have them go and get dreads themselves. go figure. so here i am at almost 38 about to give it another try. watching your vlogs makes me feel better about my decision of not caring what anyone thinks. it’s also how i found your hiking vlog which i love!

I’m so glad I found your channel! I have recently started my dread journey just a few months ago. I have natural grey hair, undercut, just a couple inches below my shoulders. I see Wendy at Wander Locks studio in Jeffersonville, IN. I first got synthetic locs just over a year ago, and I loved the locs and length, but not the maintenance schedule. I waited until my hair was long enough to have natural locs that would go into a ponytail. So I have 7 dreadlocks currently…considering the full head of locs at some point. I love them so much but still want more length. For now, it’s lots of vitamins to speed the growth.

Hey there! ❤ I'm an aspiring loctician, but I resonate with "dreadlock artist" much more! I started my first set of locs about 4 years ago on waist long hair, and while I knew what I wanted to do with them, I was very busy at the time and loss alot of length (that I gained in volume!) so they ended up only coming just past my shoulders (this was due to the method of starting, which were basically neglected braids). Skip ahead to me having my son, being stuck at home postpartum with a newborn and trying to quick freshen my roots with some baby Castile soap that turned into terrible buildup on top of my head and a huge natty congo mess. I knew they could be saved, but I needed help and didn't have anyone to turn to, so I cut them. I've spent the past two years growing my hair back out and researching everything there is to know about natural dread care, I've honestly been obsessed since I was 13, and like you used to get my hair braided even younger! So my mission now is to be available to help people maintain their dreads as a personal loctician, since it was so devastating for me to have to cut mine. I would love to travel as an event vendor with my thread wrapping business and incorporate dreadlocking into it, which is how I recently found your channel. Much love! You're an inspiration!

Big fan, thank you for the content and putting yourself and your knowledge out here for us ❤ I’ve had dreads twice, first time too big and with wax 😂 only lasted 3 months! Chopped em off, grew it all out for 5 years to dread again, smaller sizing with backcombing, twisting and palm rolling. Had second set for 5 years, miss them every day. I’ve rocked the short hair styles for 5 years, slowly growing it out again past 2 years and I’m so ready for dreads again!

Liz I am so excited for this channel. I’ve had my dreads for a few years now. I kinda did mine backwards I had hair down to my ass and then I got them into dreads. I live in Livingston Montana and not many people well hardly anybody knows anything about dreads. I went to cosmetology school and there was one girl there, she didn’t really know how to do them but wanted to try. So we gave it a try. 16 hours later I have extremely small very loose dreads. Didn’t take a shower for a bit to let them form. Then I took a shower and I thought I lost them all. So for the next year I had to figure out how to redo them myself, had to redo them myself with a crochet hook like 3 times! They’re doing pretty good now. But I got a lot of growth that I got to try to get them done. But they’re so long my arms get so sore dealing with them. I’m happy to say I have no extensions it’s all my own hair and I didn’t use any kind of product to get them into dreads. I’ve been wanting dreads since I was in my 20s and I am 45 now and I love them. I can’t wait to learn a bunch of stuff from you. I wish we were closer to each other I just hop on over and have you do my dreads all the time. Maybe someday I’ll win the lottery and I’ll fly out and see you and get my dreads done. Or at least looking much better than they do now. I kind of just gotta deal with what I got because there’s not much around these parts for help. TinyTee (Teena)

I also don't know anyone "local" that I would trust to do locks in my hair. Any info about hairdressers, up and down the East Coast would be wonderful! I had the same inspiration for wanting dreadlocks! A few bands I loved had members with them ( Lajon from Sevendust ) and the Gone in 60 Seconds. Rip and twist never worked for me because of my hair type. Thankfully a friend pointed me in the right direction and I found my amazing loctician. I was already following you and a few other dreadlock artists and I used your pic as my inspiration at that point 😊

Great intro! Can't wait to learn about new techniques, tips and trick for easy maintenance, decorations, root colors and so on. On the subject of color, if you know someone who does henna on there dreads, it would be a nice idea for a guest appearance. You have touched on a couple of interesting subjects on your other channel, like how to manage your dreadlock when hiking for days twithought a shower or the process of dying your roots. They would be perfect for this channel. I'm a newbie and I'm looking forward to learn more on the subject of permanent dreadlocks. There are lots of videos out there with people having braded temporary synthetic dreads. They are more about fashion then about a way of life and the later is more my style. Hope that was helpful! 🙂💕

Yeees was hoping you'd do a dread channel. Long time follower of you and long time dread wearer- 18 years now and still my original set. Like you I started mine during the time pre social media, no other resources or technique aside from dread wax and palm roll🤦‍♀️ (at least it was a reputable dread wax-Knotty Boy) I also box dyed mine black for 10 years before I had them colour reversed- do not recommend dying dreads black! It was a long journey both for all those years of my dreads trying to mature and colour reversal so I share your journey of them going from what they were to now. I too do my own maintenance and trained as a loctician to make sure no more ever use dread wax. My dread biz is only a side gig and I am a journalist by day but I love love helping to educate others on their dread journey

Hi Liz, love how you make your vids! Lucky us with this new dreadlock channel 🥰 I started mine in October 2022, so they are still babies. Did them myself. I already did my first set in 2015 but took them out after a few months because EVERYBODY told me I wouldn’t get a job with dreadlocks. (And I was fresh out of Uni and needed a job). Now I have my when-I’m-older-job-of-my-life and I was like:let’s do it! Did a ton of research in the past 10 or so years, so started them with a little back comb, twist and rib and a little crochet. They are nice and frizzy and I’m getting human hair in the coming months to change my extensions to all human hair. Used dreadshops Henlon for 2/3 of my extensions but it just isn’t behaving like human hair (duh😅).

Liz, Just like you I had very bad starter dreads when i first got them. My first set was in high school and I got made fun of a lot for having them and while in theater class a boy Choped off 6 of my dreads while I was asleep at my desk( guess thats my fault for falling asleep in class) long story short i had to shave my head. Then fast forward 18 years later I tried again with a known Loctician in ATL. Long story short she didnt do them correct at all for my hair type and my hair was just falling out of the dread every day. It looked like a rats nest and it was terrible LIke really really bad. I shave my head again. So fast forward to the begining of 2019 I saw your video on youtube about the AT which i had done some section hiking with a buddy of mine that had PTSD and was walking the whole thing as a Jump start to his new life and to help with the PTSD. I saw your Locs and was instantly captivated by your story and all around good vibes. I told my wife this is what i wanted my locs to look like ... longer story short ( i saw that a lot) i found a loctician in Tennessee that started doing dreads becasue she found inspiration in you so i knew it was a perfect match. She had also been obsessed with your Hike and your hair and started learning how to do dreads. Now this whole process took me to 2021 to find her and get her to start my locs. The happy ending is I now have my beautiful locs going on a year and i couldn't be happier. Love your story and what you stand for.

Weirdly my deadlock story is quite similar to yours! I always had very long hair as a kid, my dad had a scuba business that took us abroad alot and as you can imagine, in and out of the pool and sea my hair would be unmanageable! So id always get it braided! My mum is sure thats where the love for locks came from. I dont remember exactly who i saw that made me say ‘i want dreads!’ at the age of 21, but i did and my boyfriend at the time said he would help. So with no knowledge and really not even any research as to what they were supposed to look like on white people hair, i dove in with the back-combing. I went the opposite way to you here and ended up with about 23 locks. Reeeaalllyy fat babies. For about a year i did very little with them, waiting for dreads to spontaneously apear. They did not. I eventually found out loctitians existed on a dreadlock forum but i had to travel far to find one (far by uk standards, not actually that far) but left my appointment with my first set of proper dreadlocks. Over the next 11 years i undid a few and split them into smaller ones and decorated them etc. I was very happy for years but then like so many others while we were in lockdown i felt the urge and cut them all off. It was a nice break for my scalp and i had been having literal dreams of running a brush through my hair for years at that point. However, i only lasted about 3 months before i had an appointment with a much more local loctitian and here i am with my second set another 2 years on. Liz, your hair is beautiful, your old and now new youtube channels are inspiring. Keep up the good work!

Great intro! I remember seeing Gone in 60 Seconds and loving Sway's hair so much. Seemed even cooler when I read that Angelina Jolie came up with it herself. I can't even remember when I started wanting dreadlocks, but I do remember my first dread formed because I had literally stopped remembering to brush my hair after the birth of my 1st child. I was so busy taking care of him, brushing my hair fell off the radar, and my first dread was born. I found out about freeform dreads and went that route, participating a ton on the old Drealock Truth forum that seems to have gone defunct. I kept them for about 3 years and then combed them out. But now it's about 3 years later and I wanted them back so much, I just went and did my own dreads with very random sizing and no real sectioning over the course of a week. That's when I discovered your site and for the first time in my life, watched a hiking video! I'm getting better and better with the crochet hook, but am still very much looking forward to my first professional maintenance w/ @dreadfullocksct. I've learned a ton from your IG site and the videos that are on your other channel and can't wait to see what you share here!

Heyyyy!!! I was fascinated with dreadlocks for years. Finally at 50 I decided to make the leap. I followed a bunch of dread artists for a while. Was concerned because my hair is fine and fairly thin…but it was the best decision ever. Had them for a year and decided to get extensions (kinda felt like I was cheating, but it got me long hair quickly)!! Not crazy with the hair used for the extensions (it’s natural hair, but I wasn’t thrilled with the quality of it), so I’ve been switching out pieces myself one at a time. I LOVE your add in pieces to make things fuller, so I’ve done that, but I don’t seem to get them right where the hair doesn’t fall out eventually. Wish you we’re taking new clients! 🥹 PLEEEEEASE let me know when you do…lol!
