Avani from Raging Roots Studio in Connecticut comes up to visit me, which gives me the idea to explore the topic of “community over competition.” My new client, Sonya, gets a partial head of dreadlocks with extensions.

Cool partials & braid!! I believe in community over competition. When I worked at Rite Aid, if we didn’t have something, I seriously sent them down the block to the Whole Foods. It’s all about customer happiness. And I didn’t lose any customers doing this. I’m totally inspired by the original “Miracle on 34th Street”. Love you Liz!!!

Huge fan of this hot take on competition vs. community. As someone that usually tries to see both sides of things, I think you have a pretty fair and balanced approach on this topic. Well done! 😊

Your dreads are amazing. I've been wanting real ones for over 6 years. But still only wear my wool dreads from time to time. Your live about 2 hours away from me. I noticed. Anyway your videos are very informative and amazing to watch.

Healthy competition in it of itself IS community, in my opinion. Healthy competition is about winning and losing graciously. You try your best to win, but support your competitors in doing the same; you aren't truly winning if they aren't trying their best to win and vice versa. Competition drives us to be better. True competition isn't about winning and losing. True competition is about how you play the game, so to speak.

Every artist has a different vibe and style. People will drift to the one they vibe the most with, who does the work that they like. It is great that there are varied artists, to offer choice for all. We are lucky in NH to have some very distinct artists, all with their own unique approach and work. Competition is part of any business, but I am heartened to know there are some who honestly refer each other and respect their colleagues.

Nicely adressed. It steers away from this binary thinking that is so prevalent now a days. I little competition is stimulating, and it can be done in conjunction with a sense of community. 😊

If one can appreciate the healthy competition and be inspired as you say then I'm all for it, let's not forget we are females and if we are being honest we always have this need to one up! If we can flip that to lift the community and to keep everyone in tip top shape it's the best!!

I also feel that I am not going to be able to please everyone. So having a community I am still able to help a customer. I say community competition is beautiful!

Hey Liz, I've followed you a long time. Dread artist 9yrs in QLD Australia... We were recently on holiday, and i had clients go to our "competition". She had synthetics braided in, and asked if when she comes to me next, can i do triangle sectioning over the brick that we know n love... do you have sectioning videos and pros and cons of sectioning certain ways please ✌🌿
