I had this thing. I just sold it in 2019 b/c the HDD kept failing. It was big, it only had ½ GB of ram but I was a BEAST. The VGA out put this in a class of its own. The biggest thing was that it never crashed & got you away from your laptop so u never wasted time browsing utube or downloading porn

The MV-8800 was fantastic, but with the small display you really had to use an external monitor. Unfortunately, the video card supported only VGA. There were many MV-8800's for sale new on eBay for years after Roland discontinued the item, and the prices were quite good. I doubt that Roland will ever make another machine like this one. The MV-1 is supposedly the successor. However, it does not have the large amount of controls like the MV-8800.

I love the 88. I will take it to the grave. The power this has is still ahead of its time. The built in plugins blew my mind when I realized what they were. Time stretch on the fly. Quantize in real time and every track can have their own quantize set up(sick). 512mb(expanded) of sample time still till this day is ridiculous. Built in pre for turn table sampling. I’m missing so much we could talk for days about the MV.

What really killed the MV-8800 was the recession. The timing of the release was very unfortunate. As world economies fell into a deep recession, the fate of the MV-8800 was sealed. This also influenced Roland to stop supporting it because sales were poor. It was such a shame because this instrument was terrific.

The MV880 was an amazing, way ahead of its time machine. The problem is that it came from Roland and they don't really have a history of sticking with things. There are so many Roland products that could have been really amazing if they just put more resources and time into it.

Fam, My 8k has been a mainstay in the lab for almost 20 years. Indeed it was far ahead of it’s time. I sat on it for a full year before forcing myself to learn, and use it. Afterwards, I’ve always swore by it. It’s MIDI capabilities have prolonged it usage in my lab. Being heavy into sound modules, the MV easily commands them with intricate controls. As a sampler, it rivals almost all of them. These days, it’s still my favorite, yet going through a sibling rivalry with the newest arrival (s2400). The MV deserves it place in history, and truly is shameful that Roland gave up on it. Us faithfuls still love them, and continue to share information as a community. 👍🏾✌🏾

I purchased one (MV8000)last year in April when everything shut down due to Covid. I got a good price on it. Back in the early 2000s the MV8000 peaked my interest but man it so darn expensive it wasn’t obtainable by a bedroom producer like myself. I’m really pleased with this equipment, the work flow is smooth and after mastering the sounds come out really clean. The DAW portion of it reminds me of Cakewalk from back in the day which I’m completely fine with. All in one machine that saves me space in my home.

Besides technical malfunctioning, I think most people who see fault in the machine's functionality just maybe aren't aware of all it's features and how to navigate them, because there is really NOTHING it cannot do! Roland really should have continued to manufacture this series! Roland, how about a MV 9000 in the new year!

I LOVE the MV!!! I took apart harness on my MV8000 and wired up a 128GiG Compact Flash Drive to replace the 3.5" floppy that the 8000 had, and it isn't slow anymore!!! Plenty of room! Also made a new adapter board to hook up VGA and Mouse(since ROLAND does not make those any more!). Customized case with super bright LEDs backing screen and extended wood side panels that let my MV hold a 1 octave MiDi controller underneath that pulls out like a drawer!!!Next up is finding a laptop screen I can attach and plug to VGA port. I've been trying to get my friends to buy them as I had to print 12 of the circuit boards for VGA...

Mike Acosta had a say in why the MV was killed off! He pretty much said it himself in a recent video that Roland came to him just a few years back and wanted to put out another MV! They said they were going to put a different sequencer in it and he said no! He said they came to him a couple of times and he refused to have anything to do with it if it didn't have the same sequencer. I almost couldn't believe that he would be that selfish.

Former MVNation moderator here and I can attest to all homie is saying regarding this machine (which I still have fully loaded w/output expander and vga card) which was and still is to this day, a beast. Highly misunderstood machine cause people's mind sets were primarily locked into the MPC way of thinking. My only gripe to this day is that Roland engineers didn't have the foresight to include a waveform cue marker or 'scrolling cursor' for a more visual editing experience (not a problem if you had good ears and could read the waveform). Great machine though, just ahead of it's time. Hope that Roland builds off the current MV-1 and goes big with an "MV8" but learning what to and what not to do with this machine this time.

Nice walk down memory lane in terms of great sequencer-sampler midi production gear. I'm still a proud owner of the first release of the Roland sequencer; the MV-8000. I agree that these units were underrated and unappreciated, but most of the misunderstanding was due to exactly what you mentioned in the video. People approached it with an MPC mindset and couldn't wrap their heads around the MV's workflow. Producers always go back to vintage gear for a certain character that the gear provides like the grit of the old SP-1200. Although I have moved on with other production gear, I often gravitate to the now legacy MV8 for nice loose and punchy grooves. If you can get past slower loading and some of the modern tools that can speed-up your workflow, then the MV will get you where you need to go. I can't think of too many things I can do on an MPC-X that I can't do on the MV-8000, it may take longer, but can be done! Nice video, Bro! Good job and thanks for making this....

I love the machine , I remember my older brother buying the mv8000 Back in 2006, he could not comprehend the machine and understand the DAW workflow at all, I watched the DVD tutorial and learned how to import samples, chop them up , load built in instruments, make loops , then arrange the loops to make a song in on the track. then you master the track and finally burn to CD. This was my first introduction to a DAW /sampling/drum machine/ mastering/ looping/Mixers ect and it was super hard to figure out. I still use this machine to this day and record my band by sampling live drums and guitars into audio phrases and join them in the DAW. For a bypass of the ram and recording a whole performance I use the MIXDOWN mode and just record. super easy and an amazing machine. Using a foot switch on it as well to help bands start their recordings , Machine was Truly ahead of its time .

Ok you have a nice theme going on here. What had happened was lol.. even I'm repeating that saying in my head cause it funny to me. Btw Roland MC505, Roland MC303, Roland MC909, Yamaha RS7000, Yamaha RM1X for ideas. These were my groove box and full blown sequencers(Yamaha RM1x, RS7000, MC909 - all can sequence your synth and samplers). I like 👍 this channel. It's light hearted and witty. This reminds the MV8800 of my Akai MPCX cause it's connected to my iMac as I'm in controller mode all the time.

FACTS 💯. I had the MV 8000 and purchased the vga upgrade to allow a computer monitor for editing, that wasn’t included, later it was added to the MV8800 standard along with a color display. I then sold it and upgraded to the MV8800. No Roland support so I Sold it. I have moved onto the Akai MPCX. No regrets and Not looking back, Roland left us hanging.

I definitely agree that the 8800 was far ahead of its time, i thought it was dope especially the fact that you can hook up a monitor and use a mouse! but i couldnt afford one back then and i was actually a lot more intrigued by the more affordable roland sp-606.. actually maybe we can get a wah had happened was on the sp-606?? great series G!

PS: you might have a point in your statement for the mv8800 beeing to advanced for its time. Same thing with the v-synth/ GT: people were not getting the possibilitys, even i didnt back then. Since then Roland kind of stayed away from Flagship products in this market and focussed more on the low tier/less risky consumer products. Yeah it was a nice sampler with many unique features, the loading and saving times were too slow for me though, in the long run it became frustrating, waiting over a minute to load or save a project. It also had a digital synthesizer built in as well, which was actually quite usable. I think one of my favourite things on it though was the shuffle templates, these were great for adding variation to hats and percussion and you could come up with some interesting rhythms by combining different ones on different sounds. As far as I can remember they were kind of like a combination of shuffle and velocity changes, that you could apply to sounds rather than the standard quantisation settings, you could also change the percentage that these effected the sound to add further variation.

The MV8800 is a dope machine, I still have mine. Unfortunately, it was slept on and as you said, Roland stopped supporting it.

I dont think it was slept on that hard. If I had the money at that time I wouldve gotten it. Everyone recognized how dope it was and akai was on a downward slope at that time.

This was my very very first big sampler after a small SU-10.Loved it,the learning curve was scary at times.I ended up trading it for MPC Live,I still miss the MV-8800.It wasn't better,it was a lot more interesting though and Live feels too stale. Love that machine.

Great revisit of this machine. As a previous owner of both MV 8000 and 8800, I agree that if Roland had continued the development of the MV 8800, it would've been among the top "studio-in-a-box" machines. Perhaps one day, Roland will muster a team of modern-day minded developers and resurrect this machine to a new and improved version...then, the alarm clock just woke me up...😒
