Mustang Cluster Repair Guide

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Didn't really see any repair guides on youtube for replacing a motor on a cluster gauge on a 2005 ford mustang so I decided to record a video of my own. I used tools I had available to me so most of my methods where improvised. Please see my follow up video kzread.info/dash/bejne/mZpsqdGafrGzpLA.html
Also have Part 2 on how to calibrate your gauge needles.

Thank you for posting this video. Because of your video i got the courage to replace my own stepper motor's on my 05 mustang. My RPM, fuel, and speedometer did not work, dealer wanted $700 to replace the entire cluster. I spent $40 on a 40watt soldering gun, and $20 on soldering pump and $10 on rosin solder. I bought the stepper motors from eBay for $30. total cost $100....awesome!!!....keep in mind I'm no soldering expert just the average Joe. If I can do it, anyone can...

Just did this repair thanks to your video. I went with taking apart the old motors and then heating each solder joint while gently pulling each wire from behind and they came right out. No need to suck out solder. Just flatten each joint on the side you are putting the motor in. Then from the front heat each joint while gently pushing behind the motor. As the solder melts the new pins will sink right in the motor will mount. You'll have to round robin the joints a few times to get the motor all the way in. Last hot tip is once you get the dials back on, rotate the dial counter clockwise until you hit resistance. This is the zero point of the motor. Keep moving the dial counter clockwise until you get the dial pointed at slighltly below zero, E or C depending on which dial you are doing (Tach, Fuel, Temp, Speedo). It will dramatically lower the time to calibrate. Thanks again for posting this video saved a ton of cash and now I can tell if I'm getting low on fuel or how warm the engine is!

Thanks for taking the time to explain things. I'm pretty handy and experienced in simple soldering. the gauges in my 05 Mustang quit working awhile back and I replaced 3 of them using the information you provided. I found your video more informative than some information on a mustang forum. Thats not a knock on the forum, the people there are great and very willing to help. $30 and a little bit of work beats $289 to ship it out and over $700 from the Ford Stealership! Thanks!

I have yet to put the cluster back into my car. but I have to comment on a trick that helped while following this video. Best way was to remove the motor by taking it apart as he demonstrates. What is left behind is the pin. use the solder gun to and a pair of pliers to remove each pin. Than get a needle after you remove the motors and stick it in the holes holding the solder gun in the other hand.. allow the needle to go all the way thru. It may get stuck but keep applying heat until you achieved a hole big enough to fit the new motors. use a pair of pliers to hold the needle so you don't burn yourself. once the solder is heated up wiggle the needle in a circle so that the holes open up for the new motors. This will allow the motors to drop in with out much difficulty

I have the same car as you do and started having trouble a couple of years ago, first with my gas gauge. Soon my rpm gauge and about a year later out went my gas gauge. I followed your advice and bought 6 little motors off of Ebay for $21.50. My hubby followed your video today and fixed my car in less than 2 hours. I am so happy! Thank you so much. This saved me $780 bucks!

Just a few pointers for the other people attempting this. Before you remove the needle turn it counter clockwise until it stops and use some blue painters tape on the front of the cluster to mark the needles point. Second buy some desoldering wick to remove the solder. When you go to put the needle back on, stick it on straight up and turn counter clockwise until you reach the mark that is on the tape.

this actually really helped me! i ordered a new cluster from a salvage yardbecause i wanted the mycolor display but when i recieved it and plugged it in, it always read 5mph above zero when i was parked and then 5 mph over any speed i was going. turns out I didnt even have to buy new stepper motors. all i needed to do was recalibrate the needle.I didnt even know i that was necessary. it must have gotten move when the cluster was shipped to me. now it reads perfect! thanks!!!!

Great video.. I successfully replaced 4 motors tonight.. Total time from deciding to do it 'till done, probably 2 hours, but I have soldering experience, so YMMV.. One thing - I had a hard time getting the connector off the back of the speedo, until I found a picture on another site.. The "button" release is on the top of the connector, simply blocking the arm from moving across the top of the connector. I thought you had to push the connector, but you push a little button. Thanks! - Steve

Thank you for posting this - just about had Ford pull the gauges out and repair the speedo. After watching this I went to ebay and purchased the new and improved servo motors. Everything was way to simple to accomplish - actually what took the longest was getting the gauges resent to zero. But I learned from that mistake also. Thanks again you saved me hundreds of dollars.

Thanks dude, I am having the same problem with my '05 V6 Mustang. Temp gauge, tach and speedometer all have intermittent issues. Though I have done some soldering, I'm not skilled at it and not sure I want to risk damaging something, so I did find a place that replaces all of the stepper motors if you ship the instrument cluster to them. Since removing the cluster seems to be a simple task I can handle that and save significant bucks vs. dealer repair. thx again

Great video. I replaced three motors on the circuit board for the gauges that were inop: fuel level and tachometer. After putting those in, my speedometer went out (needle would return very roughly). I got an instrument cluster from a junkyard and desoldered those motors. Hopefully they work a long time and it saved me hundreds.

Hi, thanks for the video, looks like it will save me a lot of money. I'm not sure how to calibrate the dials since you went pretty fast on that. You mark the point of resistance with tape? Then when you assemble it, put it back there? Also, do you reinstall the gauges, start the car and see where they are? if they are off, do you just move them with your finger back to zero? thanks again,

When pulling the needles do you have to turn cw to get them off or does it just help? Do you push down and ccw to reinstall them? Is stepper motor x27 589 the same as x25 589? Thanks for your help.

Actually, Brenton is wrong in just this case. If your car was an auto, the rear end gear ratio was 3.33 or so. The Manual had 3.55 gears, so if you had an auto, this would be the issue. The PCM takes into account the gear ratio when calculating speed and RPMs. You actually need to retune your PCM to properly translate the new gear ratio to the motors. You can get an after market tuner for like $300 bucks or on ebay somehow. You can get some more horsepower while you are at it too.
