    Amazing, thank you. I have always wanting to get into colored pencils, but I never could get that smooth coverage. The only product that was usually saw recommended was Zest it, but that isn't available in the states. I didn't even know you could use OMS until the other night. @@KirstyRebeccaFineArt So is hot pressed watercolor paper the next best thing? I know the cold pressed paper I have has way too much texture. I was looking into getting some new paper. I have a limited budget and was considering what I should get next.

  • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt

    @KirstyRebeccaFineArt

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@melsgalleria yeah I would get hot pressed over cold pressed! I used watercolour paper for a really long time before Pastelmat, and it still works well, you just have to be a lot more careful with your pencil strokes and try to get them smooth because you may see the strokes at the end 😊 I've used Fabriabo Artistico hot pressed watercolour paper and Arches "smooth" or "hot pressed" watercolour paper and they're very similar Just make sure you get the thicker one because the thin ones might tear/buckle a bit easier with OMS! There are also other types of papers that other artists use, like Bristol or drafting film, but I haven't tried any, so if the watercolour paper doesnt suit your budget, you could look into other types as well 😊

  • @melsgalleria

    @@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Thank you so much for the information. Currently I only have three types of artist paper canson mixed media, canson cold pressed watercolor paper, and strathmore tan toned sketch paper (80 lb). I have used pencils and alcohol markers on the strathmore before and loved the results. I just don't know how it would stand up to OMS. I actually ordered some Mona Lisa paint thinner online that I am going to pick up tomorrow. While they are running a sale on paper I thought I would pick a couple out to try. I was just trying to decide what paper would be best to get since I am on a tight budget and still learning. I have seen a few recommend hot pressed watercolor paper, some recommend the strathmore drawing paper, strathmore bristol board and then some that have used the strathmore gray toned paper which I have wanted to get eventually. Just not sure which ones would be the best for my budget. So I am trying to do some research before I go to the store.

  • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt

    @KirstyRebeccaFineArt

    @@melsgalleria Melody Ross no worries 😊 I have some strathmore toned paper but haven't tried it with OMS either! You could always do a test piece, once the oms is dry, nothing is going to happen to it, so you'll know within a few minutes whether it worked or not 😊 The papers you mentioned are all quality paper, it just depends what techniques you want to use If you want to use OMS, I would try and go with a thick, hot pressed water colour paper or Pastelmat because most of the papers you mentioned might be too thin for OMS But plenty of artists do coloured pencil work on all sorts of paper, however, they don't necessarily use OMS so keep that in mind when you make your decision 😊

    I honestly do recommend Pastelmat (it's a very unique surface - there's nothing else like it) The paper makes a huge difference with pastels because you won't be able to achieve the same results on other papers, unfortunately! If you are on a budget, I would still choose Pastelmat and maybe get a smaller set of pastels (you can blend them to make other colours) until you can afford to add more pastels to your set over time Although Pastelmat is a little more expensive than other papers, it's 100% worth it in my opinion 😊 If you compare it to the cost of purchasing a decent canvas for oil/acrylic for example, it is actually quite reasonable for the results you get with it
