    Thanks for these tips Kirsty. I also use coloured pencils and watercolour pencils (the FC Albrecht Durerwcps) however I don't apply the watercolour pencils directly onto the paper first (I don't like the lines they sometimes leave) so I scratch them onto a Caran d'Ache palette (on the rough side) and then activate the watercolour with a brush and water before applying to the paper. A rough plastic chopping board can also be used as a palette. I learned this technique from Wendy Hollander. Hope this tip is useful.

  • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt

    Hi Bridgette, I'm glad you like the videos! I have a set of Prismacolor (I've taken out all the pencils that aren't lightfast so it leaves me with about half the set) But I don't find myself using them because of quality issues - they tend to break A LOT when sharpening and I just can't be bothered dealing with them to be honest! My top 3 coloured pencils that I use are the Derwent Lightfast (my all-time favourite) then Faber Castell Polychromos and Caran D'ache Luminance There's nothing wrong with Prismacolor if you have them, and you can get amazing results by following the same techniques I use but I feel like I have better options so I don't really use them that often 😊

    Thankyou! Lately I've been using manual crank handle sharpener. Swordfish is the brand I use but Derwent have one called "Super point Mini" which is very similar 😊 I use these for pastel pencils which are really crumbly and they work quite well! This is a link to the swordfish one (you may be able to get a better price elsewhere) but this shows you what it is 😊 www.amazon.com/Swordfish-40100-Desktop-Manual-Sharpener/dp/B000TK1OWO

    Have you ever tried using Derwent Inktense as a base layer instead of watercolor? I think it could be very helpful for getting a permanent base layer

  • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt

    @KirstyRebeccaFineArt

    2 жыл бұрын

    You could definitely try it, although Derwent have specified that they do not test the lightfastness of the inktense once water has been added... so I personally wouldn't use them on anything that I am planning on selling 😊 But if you aren't worried about the longevity or archival quality of your work then it's worth a shot! I have the full set of inktense pencils and blocks and they're definitely fun to work with, but again, I would only make prints from my art that I created with them.. and coloured pencil takes such a long time that I wouldn't want to waste those hours on something I couldn't potentially sell Hope that makes sense! 😊

    Fantastic spot on video for people who start with coloured pencils. I usually use OMS with coloured pencils on Pastelmat but the OMS bleeds into the Pastelmat around the subject and stains the paper it when dry. My brush is not as wet as yours, as I can tell from the video. Any ideas?

  • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt

    @KirstyRebeccaFineArt

    4 жыл бұрын

    I get this as well sometimes! I usually only use OMS on the first few layers then I always go over the top with pencil, so if there's any staining, it will be covered If I need to blend a layer that I'm worried about staining, I'll make sure I have more pigment than I think I need down, then dip the brush tip in oms and dab off as much as you possibly can, so it's pretty much dry because it will still blend that way, you may just need to work it for a bit longer! Also I rarely leave the background white on my works so I don't see the stain (if there is one) as much as some other artists might! Hoepfully that helps!

    @@KirstyRebeccaFineArtthank you. I recently drew a dog in cp and the background was already done in pan pastels. The OMS was bleeding from the dog into the pastel and I had a hard time to fix it. I have to be more careful.

    Hi Kirsty . So can you use OMS on the pencils after. You have started with watercolour pencils. I realise I would have to use water on the first layers of water pencils but when I go over it with ordinary pencils can I then use OMS. 👍

    I haven't tried it honestly, but I don't see why it wouldn't work! Just make sure you have a few layers of normal pencil down before adding the solvent in case it reactivates the watercolour pencil 😊
