It is because the Polish Ox Cart is a moving thing. At first it is far away, then it gets closer and louder, then it is at the peak when it passes right in front of you, then it gets further and further away, the sound is softer until it fades into nothingness. An excellent example of programmatic music, music that genuinely moves, both literally and metaphorically.

@@user-vi4hw5qs3y Officially, Mussorgski was interested in the sight of oxen in the field, but he wrote in the sheet music (partitura) that it was the caravans of Polish exiles chased by Siberia "like cattle" that inspired this work. "Like cattle" - I do not know if it is understandable in English. In Polish and Russian this idiom means: in a way that offends humanity ("jak bydło" "как скот"). See the picture: Aleksander Sochaczewski Farewell Europe

When I first watched this video, I thought that Karajan's (conductor) style was bland and had no expression. Then, I listened to Bydlo many times through, and realized that my assumption was hugely mistaken. The purpose of this piece is not meant to be extremely robust or startling, but rather to retain its solemnity even in its most powerful moments. It's truly a sad piece, but also marvelous. After this realization, I genuinely do not think that any person on earth could have conducted this in a better manner. He acknowledges the that the purpose of Bydlo was to be extremely serious and solemn, and he expressed it perfectly.

No, ale to moje prywatne zdanie...
