Mussorgsky. Pictures at an Exhibition. One of the greatest works of the Russian romantic piano repertoire, with these two pieces forming the finale of the suite, and to me, exist as one collective whole to be experienced together. You may have seen the $2,500,000 art-case piano by Steinway recently around KZread - this is the suite for which it is designed after! What is interesting about this piece is that the original piano work isn't its most well known form - more commonly performed is Ravel's orchestration. The incredible thing is, with how well the work fits with the orchestra, you would not suspect it to have been originally written for piano. This is truly a testament to both Mussorgsky's composition, and Ravel's orchestration. I hope you all enjoy this and are having a nice May so far ♥

Funny coincidence, since I just started listening to this in the last couple weeks. Pictures at an Exhibition has a lot more to offer than the Promenade that everyone has heard in one place or another. Mussorgsky's Pictures of an exhibition are what it says : pictures. They are meant to represent real paintings of one of Mussorgsky's friend (I guess he died a little before they were made and it's a tribute but I'm not entirely sure, maybe I'm romanticizing it a little bit lmao), and more precisely what an observer could see during an exposition. The main theme and the first piece, which we can hear through all the Pictures is supposed to represent the observer going from one picture to another, as well as his/her current mood. And so every piece of this set does represent a real picture (which you can find because they are real, although I think the Great Gate of Kiev is unfinished, but once again, not entirely sure) and has different gimmicks. For example, Baba Yaga (an eastern Europe/Russia famous witch) is known for not being able to walk correctly and needing a cane, hence the use of notes accentuated not on time, which gives this limping feeling. The 2nd part has always made me think of a bubbling cauldron, but I understand it can be taken as personal interpretation (even if Baba Yaga is known for loving to cook children). And the last virtuoso part which go from down of the keyboard all the way to the top represents her flying away on her flying broom. These are just tiny details and all of the pieces (including Baba Yaga, which I barely scratched the surface of) have soooooo much more things to say ! I highly recommend to listen to it in a whole and, if you like it, looking a little further into the prosody of the pieces, because Mussorgsky had a lot to tell with them ! Definitely my favourite piano set personally!

He could turn a mess of minor 2nd intervals and dissonance into a coherent and bizarre fever dream style piece like the ballet of the unhatched chicks. I always loved classical because there are no more versions other than the original movement. Than the pop songs having lots of versions and covers to play on the piano.

It's no wonder, the way it is introduced in shcool is the absolute worse, just like books. Used to hate them both as a teenager because i was forced to listen/read it, it seems like work to me instead of enjoyement. Imagine giving this homework for teenager : Finish dark souls, when they have no prior experience with video game or very little, pretty sure they will grow to hate video games. It's only when i was about 25 y/o that i gave another shot to classical music and books that i learn to enjoy it.

I want to be honest and that is from my point of view, so pls if there are haters it is your fault not mine, so don't attack me right now pls, but so here it is: I really hate pop music, classical music is the best, pop is shit.

J'aime beaucoup, énormément ton interprétation du morceau, même je j'ai surtout cette impression que tu as galéré sur ce morceau. C'était quand même génial, tu as réussi à en venir à bout ! I really, really like your interpretation of the score, even if I have the feeling you struggle over it. But it was clearly awesome, you made it !

Did you know that... Mussorgsky based his music on drawings and watercolours by Viktor Hartmann which he had executed during his travels abroad (France, Poland, Italy, the final movement is associated with an architectural project for the capital of Ukraine). Indeed, Mussorgsky met an architect named Viktor Hartmann (in 1870) and these two devoted their lives to the cause of Russian art. As a result, they soon became friends. Mussorgsky described the development of the work in a letter to Stassov in June 1874: "My dear generalissimo, Hartmann is bubbling like Boris was bubbling, - sounds and ideas are suspended in the air, I am absorbing them and all this is overflowing, and I can hardly scribble on the paper; I am writing No. 4. The transitions are good (the walk). I want to work faster and safer. My moods can be perceived during the interludes. So far, I think it's turned out well... "

Mussorgsky has so Russian motifs permeated with an elusive Falcler that they work on me on some subconscious level. When I listen to this my Russian heart begins to beat faster. And on my soul it is warm. When I was a child and learned to play a piano in a music school, I can remember in detail. That first time when we were given to listen to the "pictures at an exhibition", I was amazed like other children in my class. We listened to opening the mouths from surprise. It was like magic. Many years have passed but nothing has changed, it is still magic. Still, I am delighted. I won't lie if I say that Mussorgsky's music is about the Russian spirit.

Around 1:56 reminds me a lot of Ravel's Ondine from Gaspard de la Nuit. Rather, this whole piece reminds me of ravel in general, which is far from a bad thing... In fact, sounding reminiscent of Ravel is an easy way to become one of my favorite composers instantly.
