Russia has produced some of the best music and literature of all time. This Mussorgsky piece is a highlight.

Some very good ideas have come out of Russia. This is one such idea. Some very bad ideas have come as well, such as the soviet system.
In 1961 I played piccolo in Ypsilantic Civic Orchestra under the director, Dr. Wm. Fitch. Hours of practice by all performers. We rehearsed two semesters before Dr. Fitch had us perform it. It's more then fingerings those arpeggios but getting into the emotion of this piece. Performing this piece of music was one of the highlights of my life. Yes, I teared up as I listened to this performance. Never thought in 1960s I would watch it on an cellphone.
What always comes to my mind concerning these orchestral musicians is their lifetime of dedication. While the rest of us as children were outside playing after school, these people were indoors practising on their instruments, doing their scales and arpeggios and broken chords. As children these people made provision for their adult future doing what they love doing. I admire them so much. Even though my main passion is the piano, this is my favourite ever piece of music.

This makes me wish i was into music earlier in my life. never went to music class in highschool because i was never able to.
Mussorgsky was certainly genius, extraordinary talent. His music brings me to the world of beauty and mystery enriched with Russian folk melodies and harmony.
Mussorgsky is such an amazing storyteller. Love it.

The Omagh bombing was a car bombing on 15th august 1998 in the town of omagah in the county tyrone, northern ireland. The bombing was carried out by The Real Irish Republican Army (IRA) splinter group who opposed the IRA ceasefire and the good friday agreement, signed earlier in the year. The bombing killed 29 people and injured 220 others, making it the deadliest incident of The Troubles in northern ireland. Telephone warnings that did not specify the location were sent 40 minutes beforehand, and the police inadvertently move people towards the bomb.
My dad took me to see a performance of this and Pictures an an Exhibition like a decade ago, and I spent all weekend trying to remember the name of this piece and the composer. I’m still shocked he remembered that night and the song/composer. Such an amazing piece.

A whole story was played out. Yet, not a single word was uttered. Music truly is a language you can understand, no matter where you're from.
Уважение музыкантам и гению Муссоргского.
I love the ending of this piece, where the macabre goings on of the night are displaced by the serenity of the coming of dawn and the beauty of the new day. (I'm also not afraid to say that in 'Fantasia' I thought that the segue from this into Schubert's 'Ave Maria' was a stroke of genius. Sickly sweet yes, but it can still bring a tear to my eye!)

Outstanding Orchestra, Conductor, and Interpretation: bravo! thank you for uploading.
KZread has another version. It was the first one that I went to. How different and how washed out it was compared to this. Such attack. Precision. And how the hair is great and the happiness that we see in a team playing such a marvelous piece. I’m only learning Mussorgsky because I want to understand Stravinsky. EDIT 10:00 That clarinet tears my heart out.

I believe this the version that Rimsky Korsakov arranged after Mussorgsky's death. The "original" version is even more unhinged, with a choir and lots of theme changes. It's interesting but doesn't flow as well as this version.

Se ha difundido Una noche en el monte Calvo, de Mussorski, reoquestado por Rimski Korsakoff, interpretado por la Orquesta Sinfónica de Nueva York, dirigida por Frizt Rainner.

If you had listened to the original version, you should realize it's actually overly beautified and dumbed down, much of the composer's original intentions were lost, especially the dark and pagan nature of the music.

@@obiwan88 Original version 1867. Mussorgsky himself made other versions , 1880 piano-vocal score , but not orchestrated. R.K. made use of the latter one. Rimsky did not know the 1867 version , being lost , found in the 1920s and only later published in 1968.
