Lihkku Beiviin! Happy Birthday to the Sami People❣ 6th of February's our National day. She's singing Eagle Brother... the soul and emotions of him. Mari Boine's a living legend in the sami community, and she's one of the main reasons why JOIK has gotten international recognition.🥰🥰 Proud to be Arctic Norwegian, when sounds like these are played ❣
The underlying intensity was hypnotic.
Thanks for your reaction, it’s hypnotic to listen to Mari Boine 🤩 Greetings from Norway 🇳🇴

I've waited a long time to hear anyone react to Mari Boine. Thank you.
She is singing in Northern Sámi I believe…from her joik roots. She’s from Sápmi, Norway Beautifully hypnotizing.

You are right. She is singing in Northern Sámi, the Sámi language which is mastered by more Sami compared to other Sami languages. All Sámi languages are threatened with extinction, but Northern Sámi is less threatened than the others.
Music of the highest order. Spellbinding, love all her work.Check out her contributions with Jan Garbarek
I love this woman. I wish more people would react to her talented voice and songs.
What a track i like punk and heavy music but always manage to slide this into my day absolute excellent
I love how they just let the underlying drone just breathe… it takes a lot of guts to do that and it is awesome!
Big fan of this lady, good ol' ancestral vibes!
Looks like the very first reaction to Mari Boine - someone else did one to a cover of this song - and you immediately started with what might be the best live version of this song, which also happens to be one of my overall faves by Mari Boine! I've already - unsuccessfully - recommended this song on another reaction channels, so I'm pleased to finally see someone doing it. This song also does have real lyrics - in Sami - which are to be found on her official website accompanied by an English translation, just in case anyone might be curious. However, her so-called joiking which might remind of the chanting of Native Americans doesn't have proper words. It's the traditional style of chanting of the Sami people (the indigenous people living scattered among the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia) which also has a very special meaning. Mari Boine started her solo career in the late eighties and is probably the first Sami singer who also gained some popularity outside her home country Norway. She is one of those artists who are live even better than on their studio albums - the fact that this live version is twice as long as the original studio version says a lot! About 10 years ago, she also played live together with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. If you should ever do another reaction, I'd recommend this clip of her song "Gilvve gollát/Sow Your Gold": kzread.info/dash/bejne/q3qoqLCdiZnRd7w.html It's highly enjoyable! (Hope it's save for a reaction.) Or just check it out for your own fun! Anyone who would like to see a (nearly) full concert of her with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra (KORK = Kringkastingsorkesteret) can still find it in the webarchive of NRK, the public Norwegian Broadcasting Service.
Thanks! Mari Boine is a magic musician ❤️❤️❤️❤️🤗 She is a force and has ment so much for the sami people ❤️❤️❤️
Goosebumps, loved it.
Now This really speaks to me🙏🏼💜 …. thank you so much, both Andreas and Jeff, for suggesting and bringing it to the channel🙏🏼💜. I haven’t heard her/them before, but will definitely listen to more now - thank you! And Lisa Gerrard I have enjoyed in various constellations like so many, but will go back and listen to Dead Can Dance - thank you for reminding me😉💜💝. I treasure these musicians conveying and inviting into these ancient transcending ways and space …… 🙏🏼. The pathway for me has mostly been through and with Majbritte Ulrikkeholm and Søren Frieboe - also through his treasured album “Body Electric” with DAWA and their album together “Songs of the Earth”. I love his overtone singing as well as all the various instruments, he has been experimenting with, and their use of the hand drum and ofcourse the connecting natural voice - she as well has taught me a lot🙏🏼…… if you are interested, I recommend these 2 albums mentioned💜. Thank you again for bringing this to the channel and for a broarder audience - one doesn’t always knows what is out there, and this truly is very special🙏🏼🫶🏼💜🌈💝🤗.

Thank you Jeff! A very interesting reaction. Testing waters here. How does music of different cultures resonate with others and touch us. Boine is quite renowned and I find its many influences from east to north to south and west entirely mesmerizing. To continue down this road I will find you some Norwegian rap, but start with a different rap from Karpe than I mentioned the other day. Again thank you for you reaction and for letting me get to know so many new artists. Take care and have a lovely day!🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼😊
Thanks Andreas
This music sounds dark, ancient, something like cavemen would play. At some points she seems to be playing an eagle flying and screeching. I find it hypnotic and puts me in a trance and connects me with my primal self. ❤🔥
Fun fact. There are no words to any of her songs, she is singing straight from the soul. Forget the word but they have a word for it in the Sami language. It's all straight expression through sound.

Sorry, but that's not true. All of her songs have got lyrics - most of them are in Sami, some of them also in English. You can find them all in the discography-section on her official website, just click on the album covers and scroll down. As for the joiking parts of her songs, they do in fact not feature "proper" words. I wonder if you perhaps mixed up Mari Boine with Lisa Gerrard who is known for singing mostly sounds/some kind of own made-up "language", though there are also a few songs in which Lisa Gerrard does sing actual lyrics.

@@MissLoonasSpeech I stand corrected! I admit I was told that about the joiking, and was told most of her songs were joiking. Not knowing the sami language I couldn't self-correct! Thanks for the correction, I still just deeply appreciate the "realness" and the roots in her music!

@@JordanLavigneVineofLifeAlchemy There's something special in the music which appealed to me from the first time I heard her around 1997. The live versions of her songs are better/more interesting than the studio versions. And I find it also interesting how they changed over the years, of course also because they have been performed with different line-ups. Let's stick to this song "Goaskinveillja". Here is a live performance (unfortunately incomplete) from 1997 with her original line-up: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lmh9y6edYaqZY8Y.html Then there is the following performance from 2004 (with a mostly different line-up): kzread.info/dash/bejne/g6VhyZqKZ5C9hM4.html And then there is this version from last year, where she was only accompanied by a drummer and a guitarist: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Znl_ksd_hqexk5c.html All of them are different from each other. I highly recommend her live album "Eallin" from 1997, especially the songs "Mielahisvuohta", "Modjás Katrin" and "Vuolgge Mu Mielde Bassivárrái".
Yeah, Mari Boine is really great, I luckily own some of her albums. Thanks for promoting her to an audience, that is not necessarily familiar with that kind of music!

Thanks a lot. Im one those who suggest Mari Boine when I think there is a chance of response. Her debut album came out in the mid 80s i think. As far as I know you are first to react to this. Funny you mentioned Adrian Belew this track gives me Talking Heads vibes it's so repetetiv. I wonder what David Byrne would done with it. Boine have allso worked with Peter Gabriel on some of his World Music Projects. Thanks again you are the best.👌 .
Le concert entier est d’une qualité exceptionnelle J’aimerais bien un CD
Hi I am back after a while, just going to say two words about this song, it’s great.
Trance !!!
The song title in English is Eaglebrother
Saw her live a few times in the mid 90’s, definitely trance like and oh so visceral the track “Čuovgi Liekkas" (Radiant Warmth) has the most physical impact of any hand held bass drum I’ve ever experienced- they even managed to capture that physicality in the studio/album, it will definitely push any woofer, even a Wilson Watt/Puppy
I have listened to Dead can dance! Very cool. They could be some cross influences. However DCD is perhaps more influenced by baroque church music but together with folk music from around the world combined with … What I also find interesting is how much old music traditions from all over our planet have influenced music in totally different places. Last much folk music or music inspired by folk music seem to use so much more of the body like throat nasal canals etc. I feel the same with DCD Boine and Eivør. Hmm I am rambling here.🥳

Couldn't tell at first if the language indigenous or Scandinavian. She a Ted Talk where she claims to be from an indigenous tribe in far north Scandinavia. Go figure. I'm okay with if she made it up, cause she definitely has a valid artistic license.

There's nothing "made up". The parts with actual lyrics are sung in Sami, because she is a Sami. The parts in which she sings only sounds are called joik and they are the traditional style of chanting of the Sami people. For more information, just read my longer comment 9 posts before your comment (if you show them by chronological order) and do some research on "Sami people" and "joik".
