This song is beautiful. I don't think I had heard any Opeth before, and as a Jinjer fan I keep hearing about them as an influence, but was maybe afraid I wouldn't like them. I'm glad you made this video and got me to finally hear Opeth. I hope you'll do more reviews of your favorites. Thank you!

What a nice surprise. Just winding down from a three hour drive to see Jinjer at the Norva,; and I’m down to listen to Opeth whenever you feel like putting it up on your channel. Cheers

Just discovered and absolutely adore your channel. Marvellous insight and I couldn’t agree more with your interpretation of everything. Opeth are arguably my favourite band of all time; seeing them again in my hometown of Hammersmith in a week for the ‘choose your own setlist’ tour and I get to properly introduce my girlfriend to them at the same time ❤

I LOVE the way you excite or express yourself while listening specially to the part of drums. This is my FAVOURITE song from Opeth, and it's difficult to choose, but I can listen do this song in loop. Better with eyes closed/dark, of course! To appreciate every detail and not distract yourself. The beauty of this song is mad, unbeliavable, how can this be so perfect!????? Greetings from a drummer beginner from Spain. That snare drum sound is also great!!

I bought still life because of the cover art too and it was how I got introduced to Opeth. Blackwater park came out one month later to my delight. The reason it was in the record store "metal section" was because someone had ordered it to the store to buy it. Their policy was to get two every time someone orders something unusual, just in case there is a demand though sales don't show that kind of trend. It's a good policy, cause people can see a variety of unusual records that someone bought and try it out themselves. I listened two minutes in store to the first track before purchase

It was kinda obvious that you'd be a fan of theirs for some reason when I first watched your videos (the same way I assumed you'd know Anacrusis for some reason - apparently I am terribly judgemental T_T). Really interesting where are you at in all that thing about their modern style. I guess I grew up listening to the same stuff as Mikael did ("dad rock" as we call it here), so to me even in their old songs I could hear those 70s bits even though I have no idea what is that called musically, so to me it's not like they changed their style completely and I never was really disappointed with them, although to me Opeth is about the atmosphere, I'd like them just as much without ever hearing them by just looking at their album artwork and reading song names, lol.

I have many memories of being in my room with my blacklight on (thought it was cool and ambient back then 😂) as and my CD changer full of CDs and just listening for hours. I also just bought Sorceress for my dad on vinyl! I think he digs it! I like these just as well as reactions. Great job!

Blackwater Park was my entry. Half the song was on some free mag CD. Hooked me big time. Still my favourite of theirs. Seen them in Royal Albert and Union Chapel. Always thought of their music being revealed or unearthed and not created, like it always existed. Lopez still great in Soen. It's a bit Opeth-lite, but worth it.

I understand you perfectly, I'm exactly like that too: if something is very well known, in music, or cinema, I lose interest, it stops being special. But with this song, Benighted, I can't lose my interest, I listen to it all the time. For me is the perfect song for melancholic moods.... it you're not melancholic, this song will make you feel like that. At least for me! Greetings 😊

I first heard Opeth when I was playing GTA IV, driving around the map and listening to the hard rock radio in the game. The Lotus Eater. Couldn't believe 1. how long the song went for and 2. the changes throughout; time, voice, heaviness. Hunted them down and experienced the same difficulty in finding albums, had to buy so many from UK Amazon, sent to Australia. So expensive and took so long to turn up. Back in the days when it took effort to get music lol. Was a huge fan until Sorceress as well, didn't like the direction they were going, the loss of the complex heaviness...something, the way they sounded like a modern version of Mark II Deep Purple (a band I love) but not Opeth.

I scrolled the comments and didnt see any mention but Martin is in a really incredible band called Soen. Their first CD was a little heavy on the TOOL vibe but they've since grown into a their own. Check them out.

Its a completely different story when you sit in the dark and you "give in" to the music. Might be the same to some people probably. Anyway, I also feel that it brings some special magic when I do so.

I’m the same way about losing interests in bands when they become popular. It’s a different experience when it feels personal than when it feels public, I guess.

You should listen to the band Wormwood from Sweden. Songs like The Isolationist, Godless Serenade and The Archive are pure dopamine. Dark metal with great melodies and some northern folk tunes.

JW: "keeping the band for myself, in a rather selfish way". Next sentence" "introducing them to my friends". So it's ok if some friends are getting on board, but not too many! Humans....we are weird aren't we? 😄 I do recognize the feeling though. Perhaps there is an underlying fear of diminishing quality, as most things become when they get too big? Haven't heard much of Opeth yet, so this feels like a wonderful introduction. Thanks.

Lol, I'm a walking contradiction! I had a select "chosen few" that I let into my world back then! Music was my escape from everything else, especially back as a teenager, so it was a very private affair for a long time!

I have struggled with Opeths newer music. I was an old Opeth fan (still an Opeth fan), but i didnt stop listening to them so much because they got popular but because they changed their style a lot. First time i saw them live they were touring Still Life as a new release. They were a metal band inspired by prog rock who in turn went prog rock in later years. I loved the metal, but the prog rock direction doesnt interest me so much. Since heritage ive struggled to stay up to date with their new music. Maybe it because they moved into music i was more familiar with, i dunno. They're still in my top 2 bands of all time (surprise surprise Tool is the other one).

Haha, totally get you about that thing with keeping bands "for myself". The same with games to me - Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne (but mostly because of quality tbh) were wonderful games until they got popular enough for From to start making clones without the true innovation, and now it's like the most disappointing thing even though they games aren't bad they're just somehow not special anymore.

On the other hand this idea of keeping the good stuff for oneself can be kinda unhealthy. I grew up in time and place with very toxic environment musically, like basically people would just bully you on the internet for listening to "non-elite" music (and Opeth is by this point very uncool "pop" band in those circles) so one is actually discouraged from sharing the stuff they like because others would sh*t all over it just to appear "more elite" in comparison.
