In this video, music therapist and Berklee Online professor Suzanne Hanser describes how the iso principle relates to music therapy. The iso principle began in 1948 as a method of mood management. Music therapists begin with a theme song that captures a patient's attention, and fosters therapeutic music listening. The music therapist then selects a rhythm that matches the patient's emotional state, using slower rhythms for depressed patients and faster rhythms for people experiencing manic states. This was designed to support the patients' current internal state. From there, the music therapist will usually emphasize various musical elements that shifts the patient's internal experience, primarily through listening to melody and harmony, and allows the patient to begin to integrate this with his or her realities and memories, specifically through the level of attack of introducing pictorial association with the music. Studies have found that the iso principle also works well with women in childbirth.

It has SO much sense, that's exactly the effect that I observed during crisis times. Calm music was the worst! So now when I feel angry I just follow my feelings and listen to metal, then slowly change to rock, melodic rock, jazz fusion, blues, then ol' sweet blues, then drones....ambient drones. When depressed, start with drones, to the others mentioned till I feel energized and inspired again. Thank you so much Suzanne, you're a great teacher!
