I lost my teenage son to suicide in June of 2021. One of the things I lost along with him, was the ability to listen to music. Too many triggers, as my family is a family of music lovers. I've been trying to slowly work my way back to music by listening to new things or some old familiar music as long as it is arranged differently and with a different performer (Thank you, Tom Ball). This song, though. It has broken my heart and triggered my grief, but it is also like a hug to hold you through until the end. I just want to sit down and have a good cry with Ed.

The minute that pizzicato guitar started, I felt like it was a bit of a return to the Plus album and it oddly felt like coming home. While he has said that this song, despite being grief striken is actually one of the more up tempo songs, the other tracks are definitely supposed to have an even more stripped back feel. His lyrics say so much so simply and allows us each to connect in our own way. He truly is a master of his craft.

His wife has not long given birth and during the pregnancy was diagnosed with cancer but couldn't start treatment until little one was safely delivered. They've dealt with alot despite his career success. I love this song and also look forward to the album. x

Ed lost his best friend Jamal, they both lived in London and ed said everywhere he goes he expects to see him. The blue creature is depression that is following him (and others) around, its not until the end that he can turn and face his emotions, hence "eyes closed" hiding himself from his emotions.

Your reaction to the song has been the best I've seen so far. Thank you! Ed said that between his wife's health problems, Jamal dying & the litigation where his artistry was being questioned, he felt as if he was drowning. All of the tracks were made by the coast, so I think this will be a common theme in the songs. (Watch his promo the day before the song dropped. An accident involving a crash where his car goes into the water) 1) Did you notice that the one "monster," he sees through the eye, as if he gets a glimpse into another(s) grief too? (White pointed head one) That was cool & insightful. (Well, isn't all?) 2) I also think the dancing itself indicates we must at least try to be normal and find some joy as we grieve. 3)I also think the monster is cute not only from the idea of the book he reads to his children about sadness, but because it represents his friend whom he had a comforting relationship with (These three observations are merely mine & I haven't heard him say as much) Ed said he doesn't want us to see his own grief while we listen to the song. Instead he suggests we apply our own grief story to it. I know the story of my loss it brought up. Ugh He's said he has another 5 albums with other different connected themes (not math symbols) already in the works. He also indicated he's written them all. 😮 - Thanks for listening. From an Ed Sheeran geek! 😂

Im sure your observations are not far off from what he feels about his work as well. Wouldn't doubt it if his new stuff is already done, the man is a song writing machine. So good to hear and see him everywhere again. 🥰

I interpreted the beginning scene as him drowning in his grief. A picture of him at home, alone, with nothing but his thoughts. He’s drowning. And he knows he’s drowning. So he decides to leave the house. Decides to go to the bar for some drinks (aka “drowning your sorrows”.) “I know it's a bad idea But how can I help myself? Been inside for most this year And I thought a few drinks, they might help It's been a while, my dear Dealin' with the cards life dealt I'm still holdin' back these tears While my friends are somewhere else” I could be totally wrong 😅 That’s just how I understood it.

As for the drowning bits in the beginning...Subtract is going to be a visual album. All 14 songs already have had the music videos made, and they all will be interconnected. I'm assuming that there will be more of that beginning scene interspersed throughout the rest of the videos. Something else you can watch for some more content involving the drowning scenes is the Subtract Intro. You can find it on Ed's KZread page. 🙂

I don't know for sure (just a guess) but I'm wondering if the monster was made to look non-threatening because it's easy to become comfortable with one's grief. You get so used to it being present that you accept it? Maybe? 🙂

It does look like a 'comfort' bear, listening to the words - it yearns for that. That's the way I felt it. Unbelievable Ed. Love ya❤

He sang a live version remix of his new old song Hills of Aberfeldy the one song that survived from the original album mix. I might just be a softie for this style by him but I legit cried. Definitely worth a react. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hJ6OzruYntWZh7A.html
