As I understand it, Jacob is the product of a kind of experiment in parenting. His parents are also both musicians IIRC, but rather than raising him in a sort of strict discipline, teaching him classical music and making him practice scales, they recognized a true gift in him at a young age, and then just let him explore. If he wanted to try a new instrument, they'd get it for him, and just let him experiment. Essentially, they recognized that they had a young prodigy on their hands, and just... got out of his way. In the video with Snarky Puppy, you were talking about the discipline it takes to sing close harmonies... but for the most part in that song, Jacob was harmonizing with himself, live, courtesy of the completely one-of-a-kind custom hand-made instrument on top of the piano. It was made for him by a post-grad at MIT, or, rather, they worked together on the concept and tweaking the execution until he had exactly what he wanted. The _reason_ he was able to ask for, and receive, such a magnificent favor, was that MIT invited him to teach a summer-long master-class at a _shockingly_ young age, believing him to embody the spirit that drives MIT and all its accomplishments. It's just kind of who he is. He almost can't help but inspire people around him, with an infectious and genuine uniqueness that he isn't even the slightest bit inhibited about sharing with the world. Just look at him, on stage in a t-shirt, big baggy bright stripey harem pants, and colorful patchwork socks. Or in other performances and in many videos, in his bear furry hat. Jacob is just Jacob, all the way through. I don't think there's an inauthentic bone in his body. Sometime, you should check out his Logic session breakdown of Moon River or All Night Long. The look into the way he thinks about music is equal parts magical and maddening, because like you've alluded to, he's just an entirely different creature than the rest of us. Without his upbringing, without the absolute freedom of expression his parents afforded him, he could not exist. Not having _had_ his upbringing, the rest of us simply can't even _hope_ to reach his level of musicality.

Gotta say, I really fucking love YOUR playing, Mr. Music Shed. Of course, Collier is worthy of all the damn praise we can stack on him, the best is yet to come, and his music will be studied and appreciated and will open new musical doors for generations... He's our living Mozart 2.0... But you're so damn good at these reviews and navigating the space of sound with ~your~ own flavor that it's always a joy to see your reactions. Thanks, man. :)

I know in an interview he talked about how his parents were musicians and he had full access to the music room, all the instruments and the recording equipment. They never made him practice, but let him figure out the instruments and the music on his own. I think he was able to learn music theory and run with it because he had learned music in a very organic and experimental way so it was easy for him to understand the concepts and play with them. I hope I explained that all right. It made sense in my head!

He won Grammy’s for his arrangement of Moon River (undoubtedly his most well-known song and most insane but awesome arrangement). I believe his first Grammy was won for his version of the theme from the Flintstones back when he was 16. As someone else said, picking five songs is awesome, but his work is so diverse that it barely scratches the surface of taking a deep dive into his music. His mom is a concert violinist and conductor and Jacob was performing professionally on stage from an early age. He was surrounded in his home by music and was encouraged to explore many musical styles. He has been influenced by Stevie Wonder, Take Six, and many others. His version of Fix You is another tremendous example of his virtuosity and imagination.

Your fiver and this reaction are just a beautiful thing. It would have been lovely to be at this event. But I will sincerely say that it is also lovely getting to share this song with you and all the warm, insightful things you have to say. I'm no longer actively a musician but my love of music has been a constant through all of my almost 70 years. One thing I miss in my life is an absence of people who are as interested as I in just immersing in the music. Seeing and hearing your response to Jacob's music gives me some of that deep musical dive that used to seem more redibly available. Thank you and thank you Jacob. Peace.

Also in terms of getting around Chords, Jacob is always says every melody note goes along with any bass note and all notes in between are like fillaments . he is just thinking horizontally and its all about tension and release in his harmonics!!!

Loved your reaction! One thing the timbre of the voice comes from the bone structure but also the amount of air used. And the cord closure. Jacob is a bass and uses a lot of air in his tone. Daniel is a tenor and uses less air to phonate. If Jacob used less of a breathy tone, they’d blend better.

I'm genuinely happy I found you when I did, I found you a couple of days ago, and for the longest time, I've always wanted to dive deeper into music, but I've never made that leap. I've always been incredibly passionate about music, and it's hard to find that connection within others because they just don't understand all the things I hear and feel with music. But now I've found you at the perfect time, as I have finally made the choice to buy a keyboard to start learning piano and try to start diving into music on my own. It makes me happy to hear and see the way you connect with the music because I feel the exact same way with all of your reactions, the only difference being you have the experience and knowledge that I don't to really explain and follow along more deeply. I enjoy your content man!

I was at this show, singing my ass off in the second balcony. If we could harness the energy in that room we would solve the worlds power problems. It was electric. Didn’t hurt that every music student in Toronto was in the house. The connection with Jacob was instant and even though I didn’t know this song, or Daniel, at the time I knew something special was happening. If you miss a chance to see him live then you’ve deprived yourself of a life changing musical experience. Go. Get. Tickets. Right. Now.

This is very musical, indeed. It is also very moving. It was obvious that it also hit you on that level. And I'm neither a fan of the players nor the music. I thing Jacob Collier is incredible but am unfamiliar with Daniel Caesar. Still, I think the audience response summed it all up. This was the tru joy of music personified. Thank you for this and also your Dirty Loops reactions.
