The first artist of our "5 By" series is Linkin Park. On this episode of Cleaning Out The Shed, we go back to 2000. Check out David’s reaction to Linkin Park's "One Step Closer".

DAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDD!!!
TW abuse/suicide/SH mention; When I was 14 I bought a copy of Hybrid Theory, I'd only ever heard the singles off it so I was super excited, and jesus, that album spoke to me in ways I'd never experienced before. I was a depressed, chronically ill, abused, as-yet-undiagnosed autistic kid who got bullied and teased on a daily basis, I was actively self-harming, planning my suicide and just absolutely miserable. I cried myself to sleep every night. And after listening to HT, for the first time in my life I felt understood. I thought "wow, I'm not the only one that feels this way?", it was cathartic. I listened to it on repeat every single day for months, I was just in awe that someone was able to put all these sad, ugly feelings into words. I'll never be able to accurately explain the love I have for this band, and this album especially. Chesters death hit me like a truck, at the time I hadn't been an active LP listener (of their newer stuff at least) for about 5 years, but when I found out I just went home and cried for the rest of the night. I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that this man, who understood what I was going through at the worst time in my life, was gone. Just like that. He helped me, and continues to help me, in so many ways. And he couldn't help himself. I think that's the scariest part, knowing that what he wrote and felt was exactly what I was feeling, came to such a tragic end. Like, yeah I'm doing better now in comparison to 10 years ago, but what if I still end up like him? What if I can't help myself in the end? It's genuinely terrifying to think about.

Yes, all of this. I think other people thought it was listening to music like Linkin Park that made me more depressed, but it was the complete opposite. It may have made the emotions more apparent to those around me, but it was the first step to me being able to actually process what was happening with my mind by connecting so much with LP, and Chester specifically. I cry--a not bad, but not good, cry--every time I listen to Hybrid Theory or Meteora. It's a reminder of what I went through as a teenager but also still resonates to the parts of me that still struggle to this day. I hope we both make it and thrive. Love to you.

Waiting For The End is a must listen. One of the most powerful rock songs ever written. Absolutely no contest.
TBH after hearing LP's Crawling/Papercut/InTheEnd i went from Britney's and Christina's pop to Linkin Park's rock and never looked back. At the age of 12 or 13 this was it. My musical pivot to the emotional beauty of the alternative genres.

I remember when I found out about Chester I just stopped what I was doing and stood there stunned for awhile. That being said, every single tribute and memorial that came out following his death was the most beautiful global coming together of community I have ever witnessed, and the tribute show they did with all the HUGE guest artists that came just to add their love and respect to the fans, band, and his family made my heart swell to a whole other level

Hybrid Theory and Meteora will ALWAYS be close to my heart.
This is huge to see. The first album I bought as a kid on my own volition was Hybrid Theory (and Meteora, both Linkin Park) at a Best Buy with my mom after we saw In The End on MTV back when it still played music, especially alternative music. We came out with 2 copies of each because my mom liked them too. This band has always meant a lot to me and it's amazing to see someone who's never taken this ride taking it in real time.
Hearing this song on the radio and asking for (and getting) this album for Christmas in 8th grade before any of the other singles were released really made me feel like an OG Linkin Park fan. Totally blown away from the opening track on.
Okay David what? Did you just cover your ears every time you heard a guitar for a full decade? How did you manage this one?? Post Premiere: lovely as always, what a great way to wake up. RIP Chester
He absolutely felt his music. Especially his later albums, the lyrics are incredible and very much him crying out for help (IMO).

@@marolinchen One More Light deserves to be one of the saddest rock ballads just for its tragic backstory alone. I can never listen to the song without completely being brought to tears (my personal connection to the song just makes it even harder).
'Emo' is more of a certain look a band and their fans would have than it is a sound. Sound-wise it can be anything from screamo like 'The Used - I'm A Fake' to more light-hearted and up-beat songs such as 'MCR - The Black Parade'. A lot'a Suicide-girls/Manson-fans carry the classic emo look to this day.

yeah emo is an alternative subculture basically. it's similar to goth, punk, etc. where it's more of a look or a "lifestyle" (though that's pretty broad) than a specific genre/sound of music
I really appreciate what you're doing with this series. It's really rewarding for me as a fan to see someone really dive into their music, beyond the initial emotional reaction. I don't know anything about music myself, aside from what I like, so it's really special seeing someone dissect the music, and put some words to what it is I like, but find hard to describe with my limited vocabulary. One thing I really appreciate you noticing is how the band works together. I think you described it as being "on the same mission". I've seen many people say "oh, this and this and this person is a better X player/singer than Y member of Linkin Park" in response to people showing appreciation for a member's skills. And that might be true! But what I've sometimes noted is that sometimes when a band has a great, let's say guitar player, then you sometimes see that being shown off by amazing guitar solos .... that I personally find feel out of place within the song, as impressive as they are as a standalone display of technical skill. I really think Linkin Park was blessed to have a group of talented and passionate musicians without "big egos". Chester mentioned that when people asked what the secret to their success was, he'd say "Mike Shinoda. You take him away, it doesn't exist. I can't say that for myself" - and then Mike would say "I say that for you, though." They just throroughly appreciated each other's talent, without competition, and I think THAT was a big factor in their success ❤
(Edit: YESSSS, Linkin Park. That was the first band I really resonated with. R.I.P. to my favourite vocalist, Chester Bennington

Love this! LP was the band that sparked my interest in playing guitar, which led me to form multiple bands throughout my early and mid teen years. They will always hold a special place in my heart. Keep these videos coming!
I can't listen to Linkin Park since Chester passed. It's too painful. It's as if each song of his was a cry for help, it kills me. I am glad you did the reaction though! They were iconic.
one of the first cds i got when i was 9. mom bought it for me. Havent listened to this in 16+ years, now that ive matured and listened to so much different types of music, this track and band is timeless! thanks for covering this!
Would also love to see 5By of Miley Cyrus. A lot of people tend to dismiss her and her talent just coz of her issues but she's very versatile and ever evolving. She has a lot of song covers I believe are worth a view and appreciation.
I would also recommend checking out some of Mike's solo music. His album Post Traumatic really digs into his emotional state following Chester's death and him coping with it.
They are the one that popularized Nu Metal, Alternative Rock, Alternative metal, Electro-Rock and rap rock. But these guys helped me get through life better before Chester's passing. Hope you enjoyed LP's craft and the songs that they've made till this day.

You also educate on music theory, but not in a way that makes it overwhelming. Also, and maybe most importantly, the joy I get when watching someone experiences songs like this one, that I loved some 15 years ago and still enjoy it today, is unmatched. Back in the mid-80s, 'emo' was used to identify a style of hardcore punk that was less aggressive/abrasive, with lyrics that were introspective, emotional and typically quite poetic. The song arrangements were generally more complex than the typical 3-chord punk of the time, making greater use of dynamics rather than being played at mach-10 from first note till last. Over the years that original definition of emo changed and began to merge with other styles of music to become the modern day emo. Arguably it could be said that modern emo is the aesthetic, as musically it falls into too many camps to be easily labelled.
You should check out Cross off by Mark Morton! Chester did the vocals and if I recall correctly it’s actually the last song he ever sang on
