Music Scanner App - Playscore 2 Review & Tutorial

Playscore is a music scanner app that allows you to snap photos of sheet music and play them back instantly. This sheet music app works on both iOS and android. With the professional version, you can instantly capture sheet music, then you can: silence parts and create self-accompaniment music minus one files; create rehearsal parts for different voices in a vocal arrangement; import sheet music from PDF files (eg from IMSLP and other sites); export sheet music as MIDI files; export as MusicXML ready to import into Sibelius, Finale, Musescore, or any notation software; transpose the entire piece, or just one part.
New!! iOS version now has text recognition to import lyrics, AND a much requested count in feature for auto accompaniment.
This video is a complete review and tutorial of the Playscore 2 app:

7:02 Import sheet music from photographs
7:30 How to share Playscore 2 docs via email
7:59 Free version of Playscore 2 on Android - receiving score via email
8:57 Photographing a more complex multi-part score
9:50 Playback of multi-part sheet music with multiple instrument sounds
10:10 Create a rehearsal file for different vocal parts in a choral score
10:54 Share rehearsal files with different voice sections in a choir
11:24 Import sheet music from PDF
13:11 Playback of articulation within the sheet music
13:41 Staff voices and barber shop quartet music (two parts on one stave)
14:39 Sheet music to MIDI
14:58 Sheet music to MusicXML for Musescore, Finale, Sibelius
15:44 Comparison of Playscore 2 versions - Free, Productivity, Professional
17:00 Verdict - yes I recommend Playscore 2
* note: one thing I did not pick up on in the video. What the masking is intended for is to let you mask out unwanted music, eg when the song you want starts half way down the page. That way you can export only the music you actually want.

I read that Playscore can convert a score into MIDI so you're not stuck with less than authentic instrument sounds....as with MIDI, actual sampled instrument sounds, and now AI, a midi controller can duplicate any instrument accurately...especially since Playscore understands the finer nuances of a composition. (Of course, that will depend upon the inclusiveness and accuracy of the person who actually created the score!) That's not to say that I know how to do all this...but it is definitely possible with the current state of technology.

hi jane - this is super helpful! i'm looking for a way to take TTBB (with piano) music and condense it down so i can read the TTBB as a separate piano score, ideally with the regular piano accompaniment. as far as i've been able to tell, dorico is the only software program that allows you to condense scores like this, but you have to import files as musicxml in order to do that. i've tried the option in musescore (big fail) and am wondering if there is another, simpler way to do what i've described. if not, would you recommend playscore 2 as a means for converting pdfs into musicxml to then export to dorico, or is there another app that is easier/more reliable. there are notations in my versions from the choral director so i fear those will be misinterpreted as either notes or expression markings that will then have to be manually edited out. thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions you can offer!

Very informative video. I found this through a Google search for music scanning that led me to your webpage. Thanks for such comprehensive and useful information! I have a couple of questions that maybe you can answer. You didn't show the export of MIDI into a DAW (like you had in your previous video many years ago). Does it import each staff as a separate MIDI track? Additionally, if you change Staff Voices from 1 to 2 for separating out vocals, will that export as 2 separate MIDI tracks? I guess what I'm asking is, in the example of your barbershop song, would it export MIDI to your DAW as 4 MIDI tracks? Thanks!

  • @PlayScore2

    @PlayScore2

    3 жыл бұрын

Thank you for your reply! You would need to mute the other parts in your score so you have one individual part only playing. To do this, tap the Staves icon and mute the parts you don't want to hear. You can then do this for each stave so you create individual MIDI tracks for all of the voices. If you don't mute the staff voices, the MIDI will export all 4 voices so you'll hear all of the parts in the same MIDI track as with the barbershop example. Have a look at this blog for more information about exporting to MIDI: www.playscore.co/blog/convert-sheet-music-to-midi. Please also feel free to get in contact at support@organumconsulting.com if you have any other questions about this!

@@PlayScore2 Thank you for the reply. My assumption was that every staff (where you can change instrument) would map to a new MIDI channel. I am making this assumption from your old video (many years ago) where you showed the result of MIDI export (obviously using different software). If that were the case, it sounds like my concern is true that you'd hear 2 voices (eg: soprano/alto) on the same MIDI channel when using Staff Voices 2. The workaround you mentioned is good though it's more work. I do like the mute idea if I can actually mute ONE of the Staff Voices. My main goal here is to scan in church music and mute the melody line for playback with a soloist. That way the accompaniment isn't doubling the singing part. I will read over the blog post you mentioned as well. Thanks again.

Hi Greta, you can transpose scores into any key but PlayScore doesn't show the notes re-written for the transposed piece.
