In some modes, like nightmare mode, the layering in songs like this can really feel oppressive. And with Super Gore Nest being the ridiculously enemy-dense level that it is, the layering can build up and pile on with this feeling of triumph or frustration. Or both. It's insane how many different ways this song works to match what you're doing in-game.

I've been trying to complete an Ultra Nightmare run for a while now and the first four levels feel like the hardest part of the game. Super Gore Nest is the first level where it feels like you have the Doom Slayer's complete kit when you get the Ballista. So the Super Gore Nest feels like where you really begin Ripping, Tearing and Demolishing through the demons with ease. The music fits it perfectly.

Thanks for introducing us to sound design lingo with this one! When you brought up vertical layering, I was reminded of Hollow Knight's Crystal Peak: during platforming segments, fast guitar riffs come forth and accompany the region's exploration theme.

yes!! HK is a great example, and vertical layering is so so useful for exploration intensity levels!
Been listening to Mick since killer instinct. Type - 03 is probably still one of my favorite tracks Mick has ever produced.
The final song in the game doesn't get requested very much, but it's fantastically interesting. It's called "Icon of Sin".

So Koma isn’t able to come on here and answer questions about his mix of this track, but from what he’s told me, that layer at 8:01 is actually a chunk from another DOOM track called Damnation that has been paulstretched. It’s a technique I used in my own mix of this song, but with a left/right pan

As a sound engineer/music producer myself i love hearing other peoples opinions on tracks and stuff, even if the music in question is not my own, i love hearing others opinions - I believe it can inspire you and tune your creative flows. It also helps build your understanding of music/audio design and production, so thank you for these videos, they're absolutely great, I'd love to hear you talk about music from the ori series, imo phenomenal OST

Second the Ori request.
instrumentally, and layer-wise this particular song sounds much like good-old Slipknot songs and Korn songs, especially on 6:00 when they mixed bass drum and percussion along with each other to have specific sound for that. i'm not even talking about strange samples, which Slipknot uses a lot in their songs

Yeah man Rip and Tear is basically a Slipknot song and i freaking love it.
The doom ost has gotten me killed so many times.. cuz when the beat drop you just need to jump in to RIP AND TEAR👹
I just love how reacting to Mick Gordon's work in Doom or Doom Eternal brings a smile to your face.
The main hook of this song is crazy and definitely does it's job. This OST, the songs that Mick Gordon specifically worked on, do a great job at capturing the dynamic aspects of the game. This track, for instance, when playing the level of the same name, is just a fantastic experience. The low level layers when not much is going on set the pace perfectly.
Ayyyy I was there for this one! Super cool. on second listen I think the sound at 2:15 in the right ear is the reverb from the guitar on the left :D
8:18 to around 10:20 is my favorite section of this track. Those riffs are so damn sick 🤘🏻🤘🏻
this is pure educational music video, love this kind of info really much, congrats for your work
Appreciate ya checking out the doom eternal ost 🔥 best score for a game recently imo
3:50 The Batman Arkham games especially arkham city also does that type of music where the rythm is the same, the track is essentially the same but in combat there are more instruments added and the track gets „fuller” in a sense
A well known fact about this OST is that Mick got a Heavy Metal Choir together to supply vocals to the music. A little known fact is that he also hired a Wasp Hive choir to perform this song, but they exceeded their mandate and did the instrumentals as well with all the guitars and power tools Mick was going to use for this track.
Mick Gordon has actually talked about the layering technique in a documentary with NoClip where he specifically mentions that he avoided doing that because "it makes the sound feel messy" and instead opted for making many variations on his riffs, bridges, breakdowns to randomly connect when needed. Granted this was in talking about Doom 2016 and not Doom Eternal so it could be he opted to layer here
There are so many cool familiar elements that the DOOM soundtacks combine. Like imo some parts sound like Metallica, some parts like John Wick shootout soundtrack, and others like a Black Ops Zombies easter egg song.
So much of Doom's soundtrack as a series is so good, and it's nice to see someone not only going "oh god that's GOOD" but also giving legitimate insight into the various elements of the music that someone not super versed in music production wouldn't notice right off the bat that makes the "oh god that's GOOD" feeling. P.S: You should check out Stained Brutal Calamity (My personal favorite) or The Devourer of Gods Nonstop Mix by DM Dokuro, they're longer tracks but honestly some of the most impressive music I've heard, let alone music for a game, and a free mod at that. Plus, you'll probably summon the majority of the Calamity community because we're always fiending for someone to react to the music from the mod : )
I've said it before, and I'll say it again... Mick Gordon is a musical mad scientist, and I mean that in the best ways possible.
the problem with showing people Doom music is its dynamic, so the static version has like six different build ups in a row lol. Normally you'd only hear one or two and get the drop when you like kill an enemy for example

Yeah people forget that doom 2016 had an almost interactive soundtrack. Which if I remember right wasn't present for Doom Eternal, but I may be wrong.
I just found your channel through tiktok and have watched almost every Doom video, and one thing Mick Gordon prides himself on with working on the music for games is to focus on how the music matches the flow of the game
Another recommendation for you. damnation from doom 2016. such an underrated track, but my personal favorite from that game with tons of stuff going on. you will appreciate it!
I find myself listening to the Doom soundtrack while dirt biking. Fitting
I feel like Mick Gordon was listening to a lot of slipknot while doing this track XD ALSO, I highly recommend GeoffPlaysGuitar He does doomcore songs.
I just discovered this channel and I have to say I love your commentaries! I was wondering if there is any chance you can review any of the music from the Witcher 3 and Project Wingman (particularly Kings and Peacekeeper)?

First time I really took notice of that vertical layering was in Deus Ex Human Revolution. After beating it I found a game rip with the audio nicely labelled and had some fun combining certain layers differently than the game did
As someone with only 4 years of "traditional band" (Trumpet) experience and then teaching myself guitar, this up and coming producer perspective on these tracks is dope! Keep up the great work.
I hear the "lead pipe hitting beer-keg" sound from a lot of slipknot sounds in parts of this.
A good set of music you listen to. :>
Ayyyyye 😁
In the slower parts of the song you can hear this slow cymbal which sounds like an idling chainsaw. Knowing Mick Gordon it probably was a chainsaw
I listen to this when im landscaping lol :D Works fine for me in the tall grass
"Guardian" is an all timer for Destiny and a must listen.
🤘😎🤘
You should listen to Mick's other masterpiece soundtrack: Wolfenstein - The New Colossus. There are reallygreat songs like Reich Between the Eyes, Right Trigger Warning, Blazko Kill the Nazis, Horton Hears a Revolution, Nazi Punks Gtfo, Der Zerstörer.
Wait to discover the 264bpm version of this
I think the Deus Ex games nailed vertical layering, especially the second game
This my favorite track from Doom eternal

i really want an action movie but Mick Gordon does the score for it. Like a movie with a swat team and one of the scenes is them clearing a house, kicking down doors, throwing flashbangs, tear gas, sting grenades, just absolutely going ham whilst you've got a DOOM soundtrack shredding and pumping pure testosterone and violence. I'd like that......Ready Or Not movie??

If you want more, you should check out Fear Factory. They made music similar to this back in the 90s!
This sounds different than the version I have 😮
0:59 This is a reprise to E1M1 from Doom2 (motif? not a music theorist so not sure of the jargon) -- the whole piece is loosely, but this part early on gives it away.
Review Children of the Omnissiah please!
too bad mick gordon is never making another game soundtrack for ID
I am pretty sure they made these songs and created the game after the songs, to fit the songs.

Some of the music actually isn't music at all in the sense of musical instruments. The music Mick Gordon did for DOOM (2016) is explained by him in this video, filmed at GDC, kzread.info/dash/bejne/h2h6sKSGitbXorw.html As a producer, I think you will enjoy learning something NEW -- because Mick Gordon himself had never done this before and neither had anybody else!
Ive said mick gordon made "if then" statements with this soundtrack. IF doom slayer isnt in combat, THEN play this part of the song

fun fact, most of your DOOM reactions is on the game rip tracks which is not MIck Gordon's mix, it's the corporate sht, mick's originals is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better mixed , structured and mastered
And people still say that DOOM music sucks
Sad that you reacted to the "wrong" version of the track, they kinda released the official, without Mick's envolviment, but still, the official version is better built from the game archives, from what I know Chad Mossholder gathered all the tracks and put them together all by himself.
