Music Producer Reacts: Genshin Impact OST (Liyue Battle & Dvalin's Nest)

Музыка

My reaction & analysis to Genshin Impact's OST as a professional Music Producer. Let's talk about the music theory of "Liyue Battle Theme III" and "A Storm, A Spire, and A Sanctum (Dvalin's Nest)".
I can't stop playing this freaking game and I blame the music in big part for it.
You may notice that in this video! Went a bit too nerdy on this one. Happens all the time when I'm analyzing videogame orchestral music to be honest.
Especially when it's THIS good.

I overused the term "asian" music in this video but obviously, Asia is a freaking huge continent containing an incredible amount of countries and styles of music. I do think I hear parallels between Traditional Chinese music and music from other asian countries, however I'm not well-versed enough in Asian musicology to be sure of that 100%! In case someone knows more or wants to add some corrections or additional explanations to what I said here, feel free to do so! PS. For Dvalin's Nest, my impression was that it's supposed to be Barbatos singing. It just adds so much more emotional weight then, because then the tone isn't just about Dvalin's despair but also Barbatos' profound guilt over having left his friend and town to suffer. It's a song meant to capture pain and loneliness while also being a deeply sincere apology and it's just absurdly and hauntingly good and oh my god how is this game allowed to be free

When he was saying it could be an age old pain from Dvalin's more yourthful days, I totally understand and think that's a brilliant way to see it, but I also couldn't help but think to Barbatos singing it. It's such a wonderful, albeit heartbreaking duet between these two and their story with one another.

Legit, not even my fellow Chinese American friends *understand* about how great these instruments and their sounds are. I was jamming out to this song all lonesome. The area is the old capital of Monstadt, and a lot of important characters to the lore died there in a fight for the freedom of the people that lived in the country. I really love that the song has multiple interpretations to it though, it means that the sound team did an absolutely phenomenal job.

Dvalin's sorrow transcends time and space. that gives you a sense that his pain is far greater than your struggles, hence the music playing over your battle. The Dvalin bit about him being a kid is a throwback to how Venti refers to him like a child, I think. Rather, as one of Barbatos's children, and probably the abandonment Dvalin felt from Barbatos's disappearance and Mondstat turning against him. At least, I think that's what it might be representing? This track reminded me of Nier, of all things... the calm sadness kinda reminds me of the City Ruins. That Liyue battle theme just goes so hard and its so wonderful as a result. It feels so weird that this game is free with such high quality on it all around, and the music especially feels like something you'd pay to sit in a fancy theater and listen to. Another Gacha game with some really nice music is Dragalia Lost, I really enjoyed their latest Anniversary event track (from Forgotten Truths).

I actually attended a show by the SHO when I was in Shanghai for business several years ago where they played a setlist of traditional Chinese folk songs and I was then struck by how different Chinese music is. They often have elements of whimsical emotions. Additionally, the soundstage of Chinese music are grandiose as if you can hear the vast size of the land, skies, water and their people through their music. Like you when I first heard this song I also just ran in circles to listen to it! I love that this game showcases a musical style and instrument ensembles that we never hear in the Western world!

The Liyue music is probably my favorite of the area themes. My absolute favorite motif is in "Another Hopeful Tomorrow." The harmony is carried forward in "This Little Light of Mine" and "Legend of Redemption." The melody itself is different between the 3 but having a subtle connection using the harmony to kind of hide the connection in the background isn't a technique that's used too much and seems to be another staple of Yu Peng Chen's sound. These 3 tracks are so far beyond what I was expecting to hear in this area that I had to stop playing and was nearly in tears. This is a free game. It has no business having music this damn good! I HAD to learn the first one on piano and have been playing it regularly now. It's just too good.

Dvalin's Nest does make me sad and also gives me the chills. His analysis about Dvalin's Nest gave me the exact same feeling whenever I go to Stormterror's lair. Really cool. It's interesting to hear an American Music Producer analyze Genshin Impact OST, that is made in China.

Everytime I watch one of your videos, it never ceases to amaze me how complex music composition really is.

I just found your channel and I love how simply you break down what I learned in school and at the same time apply your own personal samples to emphasize your points. I personally can't wait to see more from you and review the music in some of my favorite games. I know this is a shot in the dark but I rarely hear anyone talk about an, old but gold, game's ost Eternal Sonata. I would absolutely LOVE hearing you review and breakdown "Leap the Precipice" and their final boss rendition of Frederic Francois Chopin's Revolution Etude titled "Scrap and Build Ourselves"

Venti actually tells you Dvalin's like a child too, also the feel of being left by everyone, is literally what he said, is it that what they actually tried to tell us in the song too? Seems too amazing for me to believe that those details are that precise and right on the spot. Damn.
