    >Reviews and analyzes Devil Trigger >Recommends awesome bands Celldweller and Blue Stahli >Gives props to Little V Mills >References Pendulum in his explanation of the shift from Industrial to DNB >Creates a SoulsBorne theme for Nero out of Devil Trigger, gives it a meme name, and now the comments clamor for a full "Nero, Lord of Dead Weights" arrangement There's only one extra thing you could have included to make this truly perfect, Alex, and that would be to mention how the song is structured so it can be looped at specific parts for the rating system in game, and how this was inspired by level and combat music design from Mick Gordon (if I remember correctly, they even consulted Mick about DMC5's music). Otherwise, this was amazing. Soon enough, I'm not just going to owe you a pint, or a bottle, I'm going to owe you the whole damn bar!

    Celldweller and Blue Stahli are both good, but I think they both started becoming too prolific, producing too much too quickly. Their work just started sounding bland and uniform. That being said, both of their first albums are great, and Live Upon a Blackstar is a fantastic way to do live music.

    I adore how much Devil Trigger compliments Nero as a character. His fighting style was intentionally designed to contrast Dante's, who is a cool and laid back goofball. Nero is younger and more hot-headed. His attacks are all at once simpler, snappier and more visceral, evocative of an inexperienced teenager who's venting pent-up anger, which harmonizes gloriously with how Devil Trigger hypes you up and gets your blood pumping.

    8:15 "at it's core it's really kind of sad which works as a metaphor for the character." Honestly, it kind of works as a metaphor for entire series. For anyone who is here because they a fan of Alex and not a fan of Devil May Cry, this is kind of what Devil May Cry is. The gameplay is over the top and action packed that operates via "the rule of cool" which says "who cares if it makes sense, does it look cool? If yes, put that shit in the game." When you delve deeper into the series, the story is a very tragic and sad one about a family being broken apart by one single bad day. On a single day you have a father who disappeared without a trace, a mother killed, a 7 or 8 year old child dissociating from his bloodline and the world as a coping mechanism and his twin brother who never came home because he became so obsessed with obtaining power to make sure the same tragedy never happens again. All of this, because their demonic father stopped another demon from taking over the world. Devil May Cry at it's core is the story of two brothers trying to move on from the event that took everything from them. TL;DR nice catch on that since "at it's core, it's sad" works for the entire series.

    Devil May Cry 5 is a good point in both Dante and Vergil's arcs, as it shows how much both of them have changed. Dante has gone from a style-focused goofball to a gruff and serious mentor, whilst still having that quintessential dante humour, but it sounds more like he's using the humour as a coping mechanism. Vergil, however, we see his arc occurring via V, wherein we see him confront his past, and work through the singular event that fuelled his entire quest for power, and the trauma after that reinforced that perceived need for power. Plus, the fact that Vergil's metaphorical demons take the form of literal boss demons you fight in earlier DMC games is such a good foreshadowing for how Vergil switches from antagonist to a deuteragonist and antihero. Meanwhile there's Nero, the frustrated kid who never knew his father, was raised to be a warrior, and throughout the entire game he is fuelled by a desire to get even with the guy who stole his arm. But when he figures out who it was, and why they did it, that moment, which is combined with him recalling the events of DMC 4, is when Nero awakens to his Devil Trigger, which normally in the series requires intense training or it's awakened in immediate response to intense damage, so the fact Nero accomplished it through sheer emotion and determination speaks to how much he's been subconsciously holding back, because he does not think he's able to achieve such a level of power.

    "wait, hold up! I thought DMC had no story AND that while not having it, it was also shit as well! What do you mean? HUH?" Dear lord, I've seen so many people reduce this game to what they experience MOST, which is dying and button mashing, trying to do combos and relishing in it's mask - the over the top nature. Im forever malding over these sleepers that end up lying and gaslighting anyone who is new to the series. (BiG aNimE sWoRDs aND KiLlInG dEmONs!!!) Thank you for that insightful comment!

    7:00 What's cool is that Vergil's song, Bury the Light, takes advantage of this near the end of the song. It slows down the melody of Devil Trigger to a slower, more forlorn tempo, which both highlights Vergil's connection with Nero and the contrast in their characters.

    Not being musically inclined, I never would pick up on the subtle themes within the melodies of music in games. I can discern what the general mood or tone of a song is, but something as subtle as the sad melody hyped up to 11 you mentioned with Devil Trigger? I never would have noticed that. I think you should rename your series to music producer breakdown or analysis instead of "react", people are usually get turned off when they see word react because usually the youtuber just play the full clip and say "yeah, wow, cool" and ends the video but you actually breakdown the music, you give your own insight and the video is actually a good content keep up the good work man, also subscribed

    In Germany was actually a guy who wrote "analysis" instead of reaction in the title because he was/is a small professional music producer. Another "non professional" producer who has apparently way more knowledge about the whole thing showed all his mistakes in a really long video. He also showed that his analysis is nothing more of a more music based reaction and the "professional" got much hate for it. (It was a bit more extreme than what I described here) So I think "analysis" is a bad idea but breakdown sounds good to me. (although you're nothing like the german guy) The source is 'Die Zerstörung von 2bough' - translates to "The destruction of 2bough" - by the youtuber 'Rezo'.

    The metal and electronic aspects are especially interesting in how they're used in the context of the series' music. The industrial intro and growling vocals fit much more with songs from the older games, especially the battle themes in DMC3 and 4. Then, it gives way to the more electronic sound of the rest of the song, easing old fans into this new game's style and mood. It's a really smart use of the game's marquee track.

    You’re honestly spot on with the lyrics representing Nero’s mindset. It even extends to his fighting style. Similar to DMC 4, Dante’s combat style is fluid and filled with finesse. You get the feeling that he’s having a great time but he’s removed himself from killing demons personally. It’s just a job to him. But with Nero there’s definitely an underlying rage. He physically exerts himself in a way we never see any other character do, and it’s because he fights with so much rage and anger.

  • @sev1120

    @sev1120

    Dante, Nero and Vergil's fighting styles reflect them as characters. Dante uses a lot of flourish with his weapons, oftentimes doing stuff that's straight out of a movie because he's a bit of a smartass, but he knows when to get serious, which is what his attacks with the sword weapons are. Quick, to the point, and serious. Vergil, on the other hand, fights with finesse, technique and speed. His attacks are focused on two aspects above all: power and efficiency. He doesn't do a spinning axe kick just coz it's cool, but ot allows him to deliver as much force with Beowulf as possible. And when he uses the Yamato, it shows not only his intelligence, but also how ruthless he can be. Nero's fighting style, however, is very crude and violent, because he swings around what's basically a motorcycle with one hand. Dante uses two for that, and he swings Red Queen with one. But that sheer force also conveys what drives Nero's attacks, emotion. He is very emotional, as we can see, and he wears his heart on his sleeve. Sometimes his good nature screws him over, but when he fights all of his pent up rage is unleashed. And when you get tier 3 exceed on some attacks that really shows. Like when he repeatedly slams red queen into an enemy, or when he just slashes them four times while charging forwards, sending them flying when it's over

    It's so interesting to learn about the intricacies of these tracks. Most people will hear a song from a game and be like, "This is a good song", and move on without realizing how much thought really goes into them. Breaking it down like you do is a really cool way to open people's eyes to that.

    Nero lord of deadweights music version is actually a theme in the dmc games. It's no coincidence that you can slow it down to create a dark melancholic version of it. This was done with dmc3 and 4 as well, a slowed down version signifies the end of your journey, what your left with after the rush. It signifies Dantes mindset, what he fought for and what he lost. Same for nero.

    Hey Alex I loved your video and I gotta say, it was great video breaking down the song. I want to preface this with I am a Moderator on the DMC subreddit and actually got to interview Casey and Ali Edwards a little while ago. And I feel like you really did hit the nail on the head with a lot of what you said when it came to what the song was trying to say because it does mirror a good amount of what they said in the interview. If you’d like I can send you the link to the VoD on Twitch later if you’d be down to see what they said when it came to making the song. Like, little fun fact, when making the song, Casey and Ali had no idea about Nero actually getting a Devil Trigger. They really did put a lot of love and care into this song and the remix at the end (Silver Bullet). Again great video man! Keep up the good work!

    I definitely hear a remixed Amaurot theme in the background when you’re speaking about the track. “Neath Dark Waters,” but you’ve added a few layers and rearranged it. I caught just a few notes from the main melody and then I was locked in and couldn’t unhear it.

I would love to watch the Twitch channel breakdowns, its a great idea. One of the most different themes I'd love to see you do a breakdown of is The Great Gubal Theme (OG), Ink Long Dry. It's soo different from any of other's Soken's works I was wondering what your thoughts of it would be, and what he was trying to do with it.
