This compilation is so.wonderful. Her version of Someday leaves me absolutely speechless. It is so incredibly beautifully sung. Such sensitive and her voice excells to that top note she hits pitch perfect. Emotionally very moving. Richard's arrangements in this presentation were excellent. Absolutely heartbreakingly exceptional ...

So, so well said. I can not get over the purity of tone and intonation along with that gentle contralto vibrato. No, never see the likes of this voice again, but I give such thanks I was alive during her time. What a blessing from God.

I saw this when it was originally broadcast in 1980. I recorded the whole programme on my little cassette recorder and replayed it many times over the years (yes, I've still got it). This is one of my favourite medleys. One thing I always notice is Richard's face throughout the medley. You don't often see him smiling so much so genuinely and naturally. It's as if he realises what an honour it was to have such a special sister.

Wooo! Wooo! Wooo! The ever great Karen Carpenter! Everything she ever sang and/or recorded is marvelous. And she was a fabulous drummer as well. At 5:12 going into the intro of "Make It Easy On Yourself", oh my. She just, wow! Gives me chills every time I hear her sing it. Incredible voice! Full of emotion, regardless of what she's singing. "Make It Easy On Yourself", "Solitaire" (ugh, rips the heartstrings right out & yet it's another favorite of mine), "A Song For You", "Trying To Get The Feeling Again", "Love Me For What I Am" (excellent lyrics for all of us & our mates), "Goodbye To Love", "Only Yesterday", the list goes on and on and on. Thank you for your reaction.

outside a restaurant in Los Angeles, John Lennon came up to her and said to her " I just want to tell you Luv, you have a fabulous voice"... Shortly afterwards, she told her brother Richard of this ( they were huge beatles fans) and asked her brother if he, Lennon, meant what he said.. Sad she didn't believe it herself.

Jeff, I think you and I are from similar eras. I, too, really liked the Carpenters and it was a real tragedy about Karen,. I hadn't heard them for quite so time. Then I heard Karen start "Rainy Days" and within 2 syllables I knew it was Karen Carpenter. It was such a shock I backed it up and started over. What a nostalgia trip. Kudos for finding this recording. There's just something about Karen's voice. I think I have the same instant recognition when I hear Lucy Thomas. A fellow reactor said: When you hear Lucy you KNOW it's Lucy. In my 80+ years there have been very voices that stood out like Karen (and now Lucy).

Now separately regarding this reaction. Other than my difficulty in watching thin Karen, it’s so beautiful. Cubby on drums FTW. There’s another one of these with Karen in an evening dress, on drums. Maybe even this show. As I stated in my other post, my first time here and subscribed. I like watching people of my generation doing this stuff, second only to a youngsta discovering Karen for the first time and their brains melting out of their head with joy. That and Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time. 🤣 Great reaction to a classic. Also check out the channel of Harvey Stig, he’s using some kind of magic (AI Based?) video rescue and restoration to save old Carpenters videos. I mean, mind glowingly beautiful. 4K and all. No distortion 4:3. Joe

I've not seen this anywhere online. This channel has a first. That was a good special. Richard had to insist on not mucking up the show with skits and such. If anyone is interested, another piece from this show has Karen doing a little softshoe, before jumping on the trap set and whaling. The "I Got Rhythm Medley" really shows she had drum chops out the wazoo.

Saw the Carpenters live at SMU in early '71. It was excellent. A small backup group, 8 to 10 total, IIRC. Most, if not all of the band, sang harmony if they weren't playing a wind instrument. Remember this was very much in the pre-synthesizer with sampling days. What a voice, gone far too soon, kind of like Eva Cassidy!

Nobody can compare with Karen's incredible voice along with her genius brother Richard. There is a wonderful 19 year old singer from the Uk called Lucy Thomas. I highly recommend that you react to any of her numerous videos, she's just released her 5th studio album. This autumn she is due to star in the West End in London in a brand new musical especially written for her called "Rosie." Many rectors have said she is already one of the best singers in the world. I'd love to know what you think?
