Music Director Sapan (Sengupta) on S.D. Burman Dada - Part 1

Ойын-сауық

Sapan (Sengupta) along with late Jagmohan (Bakshi) had teamed up to form Sapan-Jagmohan duo of music directors, who became very popular in 1960s and 1970s. Together, they composed music for 61 Hindi films, 20 Punjabi films, 7 Bengali films, 5 Bhojpuri films and several TV serials.
Sapan ji sang in chorus for Burman Dada, and became very close to him and his wife Meeraji. Here, he narrates about his association with Dada and narrates several anecdotes on the great man.
The other partner late Jagmohan (Bakshi) had sung a duet with Asha Bhosle, 'Dekho maane nahin roothi haseena na jaane kya baat hai' in Taxi Driver released in 1954.
Sapan ji has retired completely and spends sunset years of his life, peacefully, with wife Pronoti Sengupta, in Carter Road, Bandra (West), Mumbai 50.

+Manash Bhattacharjee Thank you so much for appreciating our efforts to bring out the truth for our younger generations. I found so much incorrect/biased information on the net that I had to do it to let our younger generations know our cultural heritage. My research started in 2009, and by this time I have conducted 54 interviews, with those who were on the scene. My thrust has been on Sachin Dev Burman, who has done marvellous work throughout his life. Everyone interviewed has a lot to say about the genius. I would recommend my latest video on him uploaded on Sep 30, 2015 as a tribute to him on his birth anniversary on Oct 1. The link is kzread.info/dash/bejne/fJZ1udyAmcqTfJs.html We are also having a 7000 + members Facebook group on Dada by name of S.D.Burman (Sachin Dev Burman Fan Club, which has a lot more on him. Thanks once again.

  • @lalwanimoti

@Ramesh Mehra, You are right. Sapan ji seems to have made a mistake due to his age and fading memory. He was interviewed much before others. That is why I keep on asking the same question from others too, for which I have been criticized by some. Now I have got it from SDB-RDB's driver who worked with the Burmans for 15 years from 1968 onwards. Not only Meera, but also RDB's friend and elder Lahiri da too wanted him to buy it. Lahiri had looked after RDB in Calcutta while parents were in Bombay. He wanted RDB to buy the bungalow and convert it into some sort of music academy or museum in memory of Sachin Dev Burman who was well respected in the industry. Unfortunately, RDB had wrong set of advisors. Lahiri da was so upset with RDB that he stopped visiting him, even though he stayed nearby. Finally, RDB went and brought him back in the fold. The same thing has been confirmed by one more source who used to visit The Jet bungalow. He had no connection with films.

PS. Its been written elsewhere that in the evenings Dada, fresh after a bath, would sit down at the harmonium, with his one drink and start composing. What Sapan ji describes must be the actual working out of the song with the musicians, after the base tune had been composed.
