Fun fact: there is an easter egg in Doom Eternal that lets you play the ORIGINAL doom 1 and 2. Its kinda tricky to get to them but ypu could always search it up. And yes you can play both games entirely since the game files of doom 1 and 2 are so small compared to modern games.

Mick actually had to make multiple transitional bridge peices to have a dynamic music system that reacts to what the player is doing, wether they're in active combat or traversing the level. it takes incredible skill to not be able predict what the player will hear but still have a peice that feels almost like a movie score (as in it fits what the player is doing) partly because he took the games intesity during levels and imagined what "rythym" the player would be playing at if that makes any sense -also a little side note, Mick Gordon took a lot of inspiration and sound from all of the doom games so you might hear references to the OG soundtrack(s).

Im not into the music industry, never played an instrument, but I really like your descriptions for whats happening before replaying the part. Its intuitive and allows me to follow along with the mind of an expert in the field. It spices up my vocabulary and allows me to listen to and recognize different "methods" that songs use to make the songs so good. I can more easily describe WHAT I like rather than just saying "this part was sick, the guitar was going hard", rather than saying "they moved the music 1/16th note" and pin point the reason I like that part, its very fulfilling. Edit: I know im basically using partial vocabulary, but I'm learning new words for how to describe these things every day with this channel.

The drums at the end sound like a rhythm for a military cadence. The voices at the end yelling "rip and tear" I remember reading were many prominent artists in the metal scene that Mick Gordon was able to get for that part. An interesting note is that Mick Gordon succeeded in creating Doom soundtracks that absolutely fit the modern Doom games and even feel modern but there pretty much isn't a song he did for them that doesn't pay homage to the original soundtracks of the first two Doom games and even the theme of Doom 3. He has weaved sometimes multiple rhythms, harmonies and melodies from the original soundtracks into his songs so anyone who absolutely loved the music in the originals and listened to them for countless hours will not be able to avoid feeling the nostalgia. Even this song, I heard two or three parts that were callbacks to the original games though I wouldn't be able to tell you which songs he took them from off the top of my head.

My favorites are definitely "BFG Division", "Rip and Tear", "Cultist Base" (that one is made entirely with synthesizers and it's AWESOME), "Blood Swamps" (it's by Andrew Hulshult and it SLAPS!) among others. I could list entire soundtracks from both DOOM 2016 and DOOM: Eternal, they're all great and all of them are unique. Like "Rust Dust and Guts" drops are like jumpscares, you pretty much never know when the drop actually comes and it's always amazing when it does, and then "BFG 10k" from Eternal is short but super high energy, which is fitting for the segment.

You would also enjoy "The Super Gore Nest"-(koma game rip)reupload) from Doom Eternal. It's important you pick the correct version of songs for Doom Eternal as there was never an original OST released for Doom Eternal..a true war crime..but as a result there is alot of disparity in the mixes, order of the track, quality, etc. Doom 2016 has an OST so no hunting required for it's tracks best version. ...Also other great doom tracks to check-out..: Harbinger, Hell walker, metal hell, meat hook, bfg division, Vega Core, Blood Swamps, Reclaimed Earth, Immora, Nekravol,

Hey man, found you in the realm of JoJos, now we're here hahah So, I'm an arborist, I use chainsaws every day. The use of chainsaw in the soundtrack is nothing short of genius, accidental or not. At some points, I can hear the rpms of the engine used as synth. so, naturally Mick throttles up alot to mimic the action, using different sizes of engine for overall tone. I cannot express my level of concern when in Cultist base in game I entered an arena to the tune of a saw redlining, it really sets the overall ambience to a knife edge. I think you'd dig playing, if not just listening to more of the soundtrack. The game sounds are mixed in a way to fit into the music, as well. It will even change instrument sets when you swap weapons. Anyway, love the work, thanks!

Every time I listen to this song, I couple it with "Sam's Base", because it's basically the first half of the song. If you ever want to get pumped, that's a good way to build to this!

Wow, I've listened to this song more times than I count but I guess but I'd never been able to hear that they're saying "Rip and tear!" (also a song from the game 😅) at the ending before. I thought it was just supposed to be a scary, unintelligible horde of demons marching after you. Great review!

As one of those people who enjoys this kind of music but isn't a musician myself I'd heard the term syncopation but never understood what it was. Very interesting tidbit, I'll have to keep an ear open for that going forward

The best part about Mick Gordons "percussions" as you describe it (4:14) is literally just a sine wave. A sine wave and 4 parallel channels of different effect pedals, small practise amps, a tape-to-tape reel and various other interesting things All summed up on a mixer and compressed to, excuse my wording, hell He did a talk about it on GDC, and there's some rather interesting things even for non-audio engineers
