Chris (bassist) kept switching between fingers and a pick during this, which is probably why you thought there was another guitarist. Hard song to play at speed with fingers, especially at the end of a gig.

Just in case you’re wondering, Morgan Nicholls plays instruments on tour for songs that take more than 3. He’s usually off stage but u will see him occasionally in live performances in the background. Also, Matt Bellamy held the world record for guitar smashing live during their absolution tour. Def real guitars.

Yeah, it does seem like they go out of their way to not acknowledge Morgan being there on stage and have him out of shot for most camera angles. I've never understood that, there's no shame in having an extra guy on stage playing some parts.

@@chrismartin2663 Morgan isn't on stage during this performance. He wasn't playing with the band live until their next tour. And they don't really hide him. He's usually right next to Dom's drum kit. I guess the cameras don't focus on him much because he isn't officially in the band (at Morgan's request), but he's become more prominent in their live shows in recent years as they have more and more instruments they need played live.

The guitars are custom made Manson guitars (which Matt now owns). They just replace any broken parts and get it ready for next gig. They are a 3 piece for writing and recording, for playing live they have a 4th guy (Morgan) who plays all the additional instruments needed for the song. He has no creative input and is essentially a stage hand but has his own little station that they didn't used to show as much but these days he gets a good amount of screen time. So technically they are a 3 piece they just perform as a 4 piece these days.

Morgan hadn't joined them during live shows yet, so during the Absolution tour, it had to be playback for the supplemental instruments like keys and synths. I think Morgan joined Muse for their live shows during the Black Holes Tour for their next album.

The arpeggios you can hear in this track are on synth. There is also a piano part played by a session musician, Morgan Nichols, although the lead singer / guitarist is also the pianist in studio, and also on many live tracks. There is an effect similar to what you mentioned on Map Of The Problematique referred to as “step-flange”

As a few other comments have already stated,Muse use another musician on stage when playing live, who handles all the keyboard work, except when Matt plays the piano, and he is as every bit as good on that as his guitar. Awesome reaction guys, more Muse, and more of The Warning ! Had to plug them.

I saw a video buy the company that makes the guitars matt uses, and it shows what I'm pretty sure is the guitar he uses here (it was broken in the video) and it was definitely his guitar and iirc it was made specifically for him, matt also said in an interview that his guitars are made so that the neck breaks and the body doesn't, and the neck can detach, so he just replaces the neck and often the body is find when he throws it

Plus he’s not a member. He’s a touring musician. Lots of acts have extra help on tour to recreate album sounds since you can’t play multiple instruments at once and it’s so much better than using playback. However, they’re employees or contractors. Morgan has no creative input and isn’t even playing on any of the studio albums. He’s a great musician, but he’s not in Muse.
