I was on student placement in a forensic psych ward and I heard "Uprising" being blasted from one of the patient's rooms across the enclosed courtyard. I was conflicted: on the one hand great taste in music, on the other, an "uprising" in a forensic ward was not what I wanted to think about.

Here's what it's about, straight from the writer: Matt said about the meaning of Knights of Cydonia: "There is this feeling of waking up and trying to fight back, or it’s time to actually try and change yourself and the things that are going on around you. I think to me that’s very optimistic, this strength [...] at the end of “Knights of Cydonia,” when I’m just saying, “No one is going to take me alive” and all that kind of stuff. I think it’s the strength of the human spirit fighting against the forces that are manipulating it." Incredible song. Would love for you to react to "Lust for Life" by Iggy Pop.

Matt Bellamy has always been inspired by science, space, conspiracies and technology. Most of their albums revolve around one or a couple of themes in that sphere, but more oft than not the specific songs has simpler standalone lyrics and contexts with the general theme of the album as a second layer. They have also experimented a lot with different genres and styles depending on contexts for each album, or type of song. Songs you should experience next to grasp their variety should be: Citizen Erased (Live at Glastonbury 2004 or 2010) Dead Inside (Music Video) Algorithm/The Dark Side (Music Video) Exogenesis parts 1-3 Butterflies & Hurricanes (live Wembley Stadium 2007) Madness (live at Rome Olympic Stadium or Skavlan) Oh also, I was at this gig! It was sweaty.

  • @lud3re384

Meaning of the song: Taking its cues from Mariachi bands and the 'Doctor Who' theme tune, the track sounds like a soundtrack to a spaghetti western set in the far reaches of the galaxy and features a chain-smoking trumpeter called Franco. The intro features sounds of horses neighing and galloping, as well as laser guns firing. The track begins and ends in the key of E minor. Matt said about the meaning of Knights of Cydonia: "There is this feeling of waking up and trying to fight back, or it’s time to actually try and change yourself and the things that are going on around you. I think to me that’s very optimistic, this strength [...] at the end of “Knights of Cydonia,” when I’m just saying, “No one is going to take me alive” and all that kind of stuff. I think it’s the strength of the human spirit fighting against the forces that are manipulating it." Chris has described the song as "40 years of rock history in six minutes". and Chris also said: "When we wrote 'Knights,' we were listening to a lot of Morricone and stuff like Dick Dale, surf stuff like that. Plus lots of fairly ridiculous '70s stuff too. When we started it, we decided to be quite open going into it. We knew we wanted to do something different." Howard: Matt was at the back of the bus in Arizona, repeating the jerky riff to death, outside we could see the desert rolling...all that went very well together. Galloping horses, Texas, trumpets etc. We wanted to depict a journey, to make it sound like Joe Meek. [ Source: www.musewiki.org/Knights_of_Cydonia_(song) ] Also, fun fact: Cydonia the name of a region on Mars that from above kinda looks like a human face.

Muse is one of the most under rated power trios out there. They produce huge sounds with only three people in the band. Their most popular songs are obviously "Supermassive Black Hole" and "Hysteria" The latter really shows how under rated their bassist is as well.

The song is a reaction to the war in Iraq and specifically George W Bush. He is the 'fool who can be king' who keeps invoking a 'god who sleeps on the job' and the 'fight for our rights' was the fight against draconian anti-terrorism legislation. That whole album was an anti-invasion anthem thinly disguised as space battles.

I don’t recall this ever being the meaning behind the song. Resistance (the single and the album) is a lot more focused on this theme of fighting back and calls out the governments of the world. I somehow don’t doubt that Knights is like you said based upon that though, Muse have always had quite politically charged lyrics in their songs.
