@@KeyOfGeebz The guitar sound in the song was inspired by the 1962 number one hit "Telstar" by The Tornados (George Bellamy, Matt Bellamy's father, was the band's rhythm guitarist). This track has often been used as either the opening or closing track of their main set for many years and has rarely been off the setlist 16 years later. Often the song is preceded (when closing the main set) with the bassist Chis Wolstenholme playing Ennio Morricone's "Man with a Harmonica" on the harmonica. Also check out any of the live versions which do sound a lot better. The best of these is probably from Rome 2013 kzread.info/dash/bejne/l4KKm8mvYLHTqrg.html

He does that quite often, I find that both impressive and enjoyable but I feel like many people dont realize it, even in live versions. Actually I believe it originally comes from an old live from around year 2000 where he broke the strings of his guitar during a solo and he replaced it by singing really high like he knows to do. At least thats what I heard

Bellamy is on an entirely different level from a lot of people, and he doesn't quite get the respect he deserves. I think people hear Muse and think of Twilight and don't give them a chance. Can't make it through such a masterpiece of a song without throwing a stank face. I get goosebumps whenever they sing that chorus. Pure adrenaline!
This song is a real crowd pleaser, it's made for stadiums and is THE wildest song of their live gigs, every time. You have to watch the Rome Olympic Stadium version of this song! You'll definitely get the Western vibes right from the start, a little surprise opens the act ;) !

Agreed up there with “Layla” for me ❤️
This song is a tribute to the lead singer’s (Matt Bellamy) dad. His dad played in a band from the 60s called The Tornadoes and had a number 1 in the UK called Telstar. The start of this song is a homage to that.
Matt's vocal can be confused for an instrument but if you watch it live you'll see that it is a vocal melody. What a range this guy has !!!!! Check out Hysteria and Map of the problematic.

one of the best live bands around and they put on a great light show also
This song was my first introduction to Muse through Guitar Hero. From there, I found Assassin, and Starlight, Supermassive Blackhole, then the rest of this album. What really sent me over the top and made me a lifelong fan, was when I came across a broadcast of a live performance by Muse at some festival (Isle of Wight, maybe?) and I realized that the lead singer was also the lead guitarist and was playing those mind bending riffs while also singing melodies that are totally opposite of what he is playing, and I was absolutely blown away! I’ve listened to every Muse album (except the most recent, just haven’t gotten around to it), and they have definitely become my favorite band. My favorite songs are “New Born”, “Plug In Baby”, “Muscle Museum”, “Thought Contagion”, “I Belong to You” and “Starlight”, and I definitely recommend watching a live performance at some point.
Great track and reaction. I know you don't do live reaction but if you want to see how talented Matt is and the stage production try butterflies and hurricanes live at Wembley. Muse are amazing live.

This song mixes vibes and sounds from Queen and Ennio Morricone so richly into the sound, we're hearing and longing for what future music could sound like.
Matt Bellamy's father was in a 60's band called the tornadoes & their biggest hit was a song called tel-star which is very similar to this
It's a closer of the album and a great closer in their epic gigs
If I was going to make a Muse mix CD for myself, it would just be this song repeatedly until I ran out of space. What an incredible song. The only thing that could improve on this experience is the video, which is perfection.
Geebz, the Guitarist, Matt Bellamy's father, played in the Tornadoes in the sixties, they had a big hit with Telstar, a lot of influence coming from that. You know it, the older you get...
the coolest thing about this song i think are the key changes in the first section since the first synth guitar melody was in Em, then the fast tremolo picking part began in Cm with the verse being in Abm leading the song back to Em (dorian) for the final parts.
You are right about the spaghetti western vibes, this is totally intended. When they play it live they even play the music of once upon a time in the west as an intro
I love muse and absolutely adore this song. First time I heard it was on guitar hero 3 as a kid and I just instantly fell in love. There is a live version of this song I forget what the video itself is called they begin the performance playing an eery harmonica and it’s just so captivating. And they sound even better live. The vocal ability of the lead singer is just amazing. ♥️
the part after the spaghetti -> surf always reminds me of a sped up heart-barracuda riff

Hey man, love this. Been waiting for you to do more Muse. Love it! One thing that wil help to put Muse, and specifically this song, into context, is to know that the lead singer and guitarist of Muse (Matt Bellamy) is the son of George Bellamy, guitarist of The Tornados (of Telstar fame). The track is incredible, but it often 'clicks' and makes even more sense when people know that little fact.
This might be my favorite Muse song.
One of the best tracks to showcase the creativity in their song writing 🎉 Keep the reactions coming
I've been waiting for this one forever!
That in the beginning and for most of the song really, is the singer following his own guitar notes.

I love Muse and I love this song. So many layers
Thanks for this one Geebz. Always nice of you to react (so positively) to Muse. They have plucked every string in my heart. They are not afraid (like many bands) to move with the times, evolve, experiment, but retain the soul and essence of what they are. Moreover, they are very humble, humorous and down to earth. Matt Bellamy’s solo project stuff is very enchanting too. Thanks again, Alhoa and ALRIGHT!! 🤘🏼👍🏼👏🏼
Wow nice! I've been waiting for this track for years! So happy, about to begin! Good stuff Mr
Is it just me, or does this song sound like a desperate last cavalry charge? 10/10, would ride to my death again.
First time watching you. Popped up in my suggested videos. I love that you confessed that you don't usually react as you do or I would have just assumed it was typical. So nice to watch somebody experience this song forgot the first time. Agree with all of your (humorously apologetic) observations and laughed because I was thinking about Deep Purple too. My uncle played me some of their stuff when I was maybe 14 and I ended up listening to a classic rock station for a couple of years in the morning on the drive to work. Love that they included that vibe in this track that has grown on me more every time I listen to it and I now feel that it's a bit of a masterpiece really. One that starts with.... UFOs and horses. And now I feel compelled to watch Cowboys and Aliens. And this is how my Saturdays roll out lol. Cheers!

Thanks for doing this one sir.
The melody after the intro is guitar, but Matt Bellamy's using the vibrato bar throughout and it sounds like it has a flanger on. I've been trying to get that guitar tone for some time now, a Jaguar with the vibrato is the closest I can get
The first time I heard this song was live at Reading Festival in 2006, still gives me goose bumps to this day!

I saw that you do a lot of rock/metal reaction videos and i'd like to suggest "Long Distance Calling - The Nearing Grave/Fire in the Mountain". Keep at it man, i love it.
I'm seeing Muse for the first time this Sunday!
When playing live, the harmonica from “Once upon a time in the west” starts this song, yes, spaghetti western. :-)
Good to see you come back to Muse!
My dad had the 45 of Telstar (flip side Jungle Fever, iirc), so when I bought the Muse album on the strength of the vampire baseball song, this was a beautifully wrapped surprise. Cheers!
Speaking of Halloween, Muse have a track called You Make Me Feel Like It's Halloween on the latest album realeased not long ago. Might be worth checking that one out while we're in the season.
Cydonia Mensae is a place on Mars that people thought looked like a face. It did at first but when they got better pictures it didn't at all.
One of the best Tracks to come out of the naughties. Definitely one of my favorite songs of all time! I'm still here.
Their liveperformance reminded me on "child in time", maybe that´s why you got Deep Purple vibes :D
Animated...You should try the song Live. It's more complex with added riff offs and they at an outro that banging and different for every live they do of the song. And on their many world tours they play this song and almost exclusively their final song. So you can imagine that they give their FULLness to the their final live performances.
Dude! That middle change is a bass tapping solo!!
Saw this live. The crowd went absolutely mental!
This song. LIVE. ROME.
Thank you Geebz 😊
Matt Belamys father was in the Tornadoes who were the first English band to have a no 1 in the states and UK at the same time. The beginning of the track sounds like Telstar his dad's song. When matt grew up he had all the best musicians on the planet go round his house to see his dad and learnt the guitar that way. His idol is Tom Morello and I was lucky enough to see them on stage together at West Hams ground a couple of years back. When I heard Tom was the support I nearly shit in my paints I was so excited. I'd already seen RATM so knew just how good he is.

Boy I wish you were watching the video for this. You must do it in your own time. It's just incredible. Suits the music perfectly. Spaghetti western indeed.
This song always conjures an image of Quentin Tarantino making a film that starts off as a Spaghetti Western, but suddenly aliens show up, and as per usual, shit gets weird. I like that you thought of Spaghetti Westerns too. I hadn't thought about it, but now I expect that many people have made that connection. ps: I often type comments while I'm first listening to videos here on KZread (like this time), and as obvious as it seems in hindsight, I was genuinely surprised that you made that connection.
