What you see it's a combat here. The monk fights musashi in a metaphysical way and shows how underdeveloped he is in there.

Absolutely. You can defeat a man’s strategy, and take away his power, and you can defeat a man’s sword and take his life. But if you can defeat a man’s philosophy, you can take the fire from his heart...which is especially helpful if the fire in someone’s heart threatens to consume them entirely, the way Musashi’s desperate ambition was set to consume him at this point in his journey.

@@yogodagorah5928 Thats such a good observation. In the book, the monk tells him "You need to be weaker. You are too strong". This is combat, pure and simple. And Musashi got handled like an errant child and all his major faults were so easily exposed. And he knew and respected the monk for it. The book is rather different, at least the one I read. But still, this scene is rich and deep with such meaning.

I used to love watching this show when I lived in Kobe. I learned more Japanese from this show and others than I did in language school my company sent me to for the first six months. Makes me miss the six years I spent there. Such a powerful show in so many ways as this scene shows.

Nah, those big brown eyes, heavy eye shadow, and eternally pursed lips makes it difficult to take him seriously. I tend to prefer Mifune's portrayal of the legendary character. Mifune was an actor who could get away with chewing scenery at times. Later actors can't, but not for lack of trying. Even so, Rentaro Mikuni in his later years probably bore the best physical resemblance to actual pictures of the historical MM.

That would be a hell of a fight. I have watched most of the old Zatoichi films and they are a magnificent mix of satire, drama, cheesy cheap silly humor, and really good action. The Zatoichi of that period would be darn near an even call I think, and the fight would have only happened because Zatoichi gambled his way into it purely by accident somehow lol. Zatoichi and Yojimbo did fight to a draw, however, while they did lose all that powdered gold. And he is the other greatest swordsman of that narrative.
