For me, the key to what made Murray's commenting interesting was his wit, his self awareness over his own hysterical and - often - nonsensical commenting. And the sense of humor that he had about it. "Arrgh! He's going into the pool (at Monaco)" "Well, that should put out the flames." LMFAO, James "Shunt" Hunt was always perfect as additional commentary with Murray. So sad that we lost him to cancer in 1993. Even before his days in the commentary booth with Murray, he was one hilarious personality. Only James would show up for morning free practice wearing a T-shirt that said "Sex: the breakfast of champions"! I am not making this up. RIP James.

I must note that Hunt died of a heart attack rather than cancer, but concur with everything else you've said!
In Canada a number of years ago we had an Ice Hockey commentator named Harry Neale who had very similar analyses.
Even though he did not know me, he listened to what I had to say, brilliant and clever man.
RIP Murray Walker
RIP Murray.
Legend
Legend RIP Murray ❤️
The man was the reason I fell in love with f1. Its not the same sport, unless I am very much mistaken.... I am very much mistaken
LEGEND.
You're right there Murray
David should have let Murray read those. I'd have loved to hear those again in Murrays' unique voice.
Much fun, thanks for the post! I would love to see the entire interview but can't seem to find it. :-(
AND AND AND AND This will really help the team in this year's constructors championship
Formula 1 had Murray Walker, NASCAR had Ken Squier, Indycar had Paul Paige three great commentators of motor racing
RIP Murray and Darrel Eastlake (the Aussie interviewer)
“YES YES IT’S GO!”
God bless him.
I love Murray. I miss hearing his voice. Inexplicably, now, how many years later, I begin to value Darrel Eastlake's 'commentary' too.
"He's gone from 7th to 6th from 4th to 5th & now he's up to 3rd."
Sir Murray Walker is a legend!

To paraphrase a certain Mr E Morecambe "He says all the right words but not necessarily in the right order I'll give you that sunshine I'll give you that"
Murray Walker was the Ned Jarrett of Formula 1
Man, the F1 community in the sky just got to meet its spokesman!....
Michael Schumacher, as I expected, ia extending his lead over Michael Schumacher
And it’s an Escort in the lead of this race which is not surprising because they’re all Escorts in this race
Voice is synonymous with F1

I assure you Murray, we know about F1 in the US.

Jeremy Johnson ah he's a good lad is Murray. He didn't mean anything by it

I think you're talking him too literal. It's not a mainstream or popular sport in the US, of course there's a small minority of people in the US who are fans but most people in the US don't know anything about it.

What he meant was it's not a popular sport. NASCAR is much more popular. Along with baseball, NHL, NFL, NBA. After that farce of a US Grand Prix in Indianapolis I don't blame some Americans for going off it. 2005 I think it was.

Of that I'm aware. Hyperbole on my part, as well, as F1 is part of my very soul.
arguably the greatest commentator of all time for ANY sport, although martin tyler comes a close second
This interview seemed way better than Sebastian Vettel's time there.
